Chancellor’s Updates

What students are saying about online learning …

“The Zoom meetings we have really are helping

me get through this and are making it a little bit easier. And I think that

goes for a lot of my classmates that also feel

the same way.”

“You are so transparent. I hope my classmates

understand your actions should make them feel safe

about being transparent when completing some of the

class assignments. I know I will! You add an enlightened perspective and meaning to this class, especially now.”

“Online learning is very difficult for me but

somehow you are still able to make class fun and seem like normal. Thank you for being so responsive to this situation and taking time to hear our perspectives about

what’s going on.”

What faculty Chancellor’s Updates are sharing …

“It has been most inspiring and profoundly touching to spend time with our students, each

of us secluded in our own spaces, yet spending our time

growing as musicians and occupying our time in a most

positive way, rather than entering into a climate of fear so prevalent (justifiably so!) in these peculiar times affecting

people all over the world.” - Professor , Music

“Some of my students have lost a friend or relative to the coronavirus; another was

exposed while on spring break and is quarantined in a room in

North Carolina (his parents are in CA); another had to move to her parents who live in another state because she lost her job; many

in my Lit class are either working doing deliveries or in fast food or

no longer have a job. Yet, not one dropped the course.”

Professor, Modern Languages

“I have spent many hours doing Canvas

tutoring. I feel fulfilled and happy to be making a difference for faculty

who couldn't/didn't use technology before.”

Professor, Communication Studies

Chancellor’s Updates Thank you Academic Senate…

• A huge debt of gratitude is extended to our Academic Senate and Curriculum Committee, who have been in frequent conversations over the past few weeks in developing an emergency blanket Distance Learning Addendum that will enable us to proactively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic should it continue this summer and fall 2020.

• Last week, our Academic Senate called a Special Meeting to express their student support via resolution regarding necessary adjustments to our grading policies for Pass/No Pass and changes needed for our local degree and certificate requirements.

• We are grateful to all the Senators and faculty participating in ongoing Senate committees, such as Program Viability and CASL/Program Review, which are continuing during this pandemic in support of our Academic Senate and Curriculum Committee, to ensure that the needs of our students continue to be met despite these uncertain times where members are currently off-campus.

VA Department of Education Status and Updates

Over the past two weeks, VA has worked with Congress to preserve GI Bill benefits for impacted students during this difficult time. The Senate and House passed S.3503 and the bill will be headed to POTUS to sign, which will give the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) the authority to continue GI Bill payments uninterrupted in the event of national emergencies. The new law allows for VA to continue to pay benefits regardless of the fact that the program has changed from resident training to online training. Also, students will continue to receive the same monthly housing allowance payments that they received for resident training until January 1, 2021, or until the school resumes normal operations of resident training. VA is working to immediately implement the new changes to address current and future school terms to ensure students continue to receive their education benefits.
