COA FY17 ANNUAL REPORT

The social implications of gifts are powerful. Gifts are a cornerstone of human society and have been the focus of some of the most important anthropological works of the last century, as in Marcel Mauss’s classic exposé on exchange, The Gift. Mauss’s study of the relation between forms of exchange and social structure reveals the widespread practice of exchanging gifts in societies from ancient Rome to present-day Melanesia.

Gifts are important indicators about what societies value. Donations to COA are investments in the future. They support leaders who will make a difference to our planet. Higher education for all students, regardless of socioeconomic class. The importance of progressive models of higher education. Research on MDI and our surrounding communities. Fresh ideas. Youth. Innovation. We thank you for your belief in this institution and for your gift.

Yet, considering College of the Atlantic and all of you who find yourselves reading this Annual Report, I much prefer we use the word “investment.” Yes, you have all given the college resources you could have decided to give elsewhere, and for that we are deeply grateful. But I also expect—and hope—that there’s a smidgen of reciprocal altruism in these exchanges, and that you look for a return on your investment in us.

There is nothing coldhearted about this.

I prefer the word investment because, in fact, it conjures two very important and very warm, generous ideas. First, your investment in us manifests partnership. It symbolizes and activates a sense of wanting to work collaboratively. It symbolizes and activates a shared purpose. Second and, again, collectively, we seek and work to grow your investment: yes, in the numeric sense through sound financial management, but also in the sense that, through partnership, we grow a new idea and that growth makes tangible improvements to the world around us.

As we approach our 50th year as an institution, we will be spending more time demonstrating how our partnership through investment touches down in three areas: the economic, intellectual, and cultural life here on Mount Desert Island; the wicked challenges that shape our global ecological future; and the world of higher education. As an institution and as individuals, we seek to help shape the revitalization on MDI; to seed the world with the most effective leaders who will use their COA experience to help navigate our difficult and complex ecological future; and to innovate and evolve our system of higher education against a tide of homogenization, narrow-mindedness, and rote information acquisition.

These are audacious goals, but COA has a history of creating outsized impacts for our small size and has done so in large part because of the investors outlined in this report. We thank each of you.

Sincerely,Darron

Dr. Darron Collins, ‘92COA President

Philanthropy is about generosity in all its forms, and gifts of time—a most precious resource—are truly appreciated. Whether volunteering in classes, on one of COA’s boards, in the gardens, serving on a panel, or presenting at a public event, our community is enriched by the generosity of the following.

FINANCIALS

Fiscal Year 2017 was a period of modest growth of revenue, expenses, and overall fund balances. We balanced the operating budget with a very small surplus and increased the totalnet fund balance to $73.7 million, including $53 million in the endowment. The endowment grew by about $4.8 million, as investment earnings and new gifts outpaced the annual draw of $2 million, which supports the operations of the college through scholarships, faculty chairs, and unrestricted allocations. We continued to reduce the long-term debt (tax exempt bonds issued to finance the construction of student housing).

The summary of our operating budget shows our results for fiscal years 2016 and 2017. Note that these figures do not include depreciation, but do include the cost of debt service and capital expenses, such as the purchase of equipment. The major source of operating revenue continues to be net tuition. Our tuition and fees grew very slightly from the prior year by $80 thousand, but student aid increased by $485 thousand, so that the overall decrease in net tuition was $565 thousand. We are still seeing many student families who need significant financial support.

Other significant revenue sources include the annual draw from our endowment, our annual fund, and the Davis United World College Scholarships. We again had a wonderful year-end drive to support the annual fund, which raised $1.3 million. The Davis Scholarships continue to support a wonderful cadre of students from over 40 countries. Several other revenue sources are offset by related expenses such as housing, dining, and operation of summer activities.

We continue to hold the line on the expense side of the ledger, as we have over the last severalyears. Our major on-going expense increases have been modest salary raises and additions tothe faculty to keep pace with growth of student enrollment. And we, like many organizations, face increases in the cost of health care insurance, which is the major component of our fringebenefits.
