Academic Achievement Award

Taylor Patek - In addition to earning one of the highest grade point averages (GPAs) in the 2020 University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy graduating Pharm.D. class, Taylor served as Secretary of the Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Society and is a Student Representative of the Central Texas Society of Health System Pharmacists Board of Directors. Taylor also participated in several service, patient care, and research activities during her time as a student.

Jaime Pena - Jaime earned one of the highest grade point averages (GPAs) in the 2020 University of Texas at Austin Col-lege of Pharmacy graduating Pharm.D. class. Jaime was a member of several pharmacy organizations, including the Co-operative Pharmacy Student Association where he served as Vice-President. Jaime also participated in several academic and service positions during his time as a student.

Jordan Loomis - Jordan earned one of the highest grade point averages (GPAs) in the 2020 University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy graduating Pharm.D. class. Jordan held several academic roles during her time as a student in the College. She was also a member of several pharmacy organizations, including Student Chapter of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy where she held several chair positions.

Outstanding Research

Brenda Astorga - In addition to serving as the College of Pharmacy representative for The University of Texas Senate as well as chair of various committees in multiple student organizations, Brenda led a project entitled “An Interprofes-sional Approach to Improving Medication Reconciliation in an Academic Medical Center” that was recognized as the Best Quality Improvement Project at the University of Texas Interprofessional Health Showcase. She also participated in additional research projects focusing on infectious disease and nutritional health, which resulted in two peer-reviewed publications and one presentation at a scientific meeting.

Alana Coleman - Through the Pharm.D. honors program, Alana led a project titled “Antibiotic Utilization Patterns As-sociated with Treating Pediatric Urinary Tract Infections in Texas Medicaid Patients”. This resulted in four presentations at national and local meetings. She also participated in research focused on pharmacist-led hemorrhage control which resulted in three presentations at national and local meetings and three peer-reviewed publications.

Christopher Jackson - In addition to earning one of the highest grade point averages (GPAs) in the 2020 University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy graduating Pharm.D. class and holding several academic positions during his time as a student, Chris led research projects entitled “The Impact of Rapid Diagnostics on the Management of Infectious Gastroenteritis due to Shigella and Shiga-producing E. Coli in a Large Community Hospital,” and “Utility of T2 Bacterial Panel for Antibiotic Stewardship in Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation”. These projects have thus far resulted in three abstracts at national and local conferences and two manuscripts currently under review in high impact journals.

Rupesh Panchal - While holding several academic and service positions during his time as a student, Rupesh led research projects titled “Exploring the Potential of Using Health Information Technology in Community Pharmacy to Increase Tobacco Cessation Counseling Referrals” and “Gamma Amino-Butyric Acid (GABA) Modulating Medications and their Increased Risk of Clostridioides difficile Infection”. He also participated in additional research projects in infectious disease with focus on antibiotic prescribing practices and prevalence of C. difficile in Texas soil. This work resulted in two abstracts at international meetings, three presentations at state and local meetings, and one paper under peer review.

Excellence in Patient Care

Judy Chan - Judy participated in the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation Team Clinical Skills competi-tion and has served at many health screenings and medication therapy management events. She also was selected for a competitive rotation with the Indian Health Service during the fourth academic year in the pharmacy curriculum, and gained experience in caring for this patient population. Additionally, Judy has served as the International Vice President of the American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists.

Ashley Dinh - Ashley served as Co-Chair for Project Collaborate and coordinated over 30 health screening events in communities in Austin, San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley. She also participated in medical mission trips to Yan-gon, Myanmar and Cocle, Panama to assist in providing free health services to underserved villages. She participated in numerous patient care activities to improve care of dialysis patients as well as patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Her accomplishments in these areas were acknowledged at national and local meetings.

Steven Swank - Steven served as President for the UT-Student National Pharmaceutical Association, the Clinical Special-ty Chair for the UT-Student College of Clinical Pharmacists and received the Statewide Self Care Competition Cham-pion Award from the Texas Pharmacy Association. He participated in and placed first in the Clinical Skills in Patient Counseling Competition sponsored by the Student Society of Health System Pharmacists. Steven also participated in several research projects focused on transgender and elderly patent populations as well as nutritional issues associated with university students faced with food insecurity.

Dedicated Service

Ashley Abraham - Ashley provided service to the college and the community through a variety of college and pharmacy organization-sponsored initiatives. She organized a trip to Houston to assist those affected by Hurricane Harvey. She also organized mission trips to Casa Marianella, an immigrant shelter in Myanmar and to Acuna, Mexico to provide health services to underserved populations. As chair of the Operation Heart Project, she participated in numerous health screenings and educational events throughout Austin.

Volanda Jackson - Volanda was a mentor for the UT College of Student Affairs Project Engage Pharmacy Program (PEPP), which inspires historically underrepresented minorities and first generation college students to consider careers in pharmacy. She also shared her passion for the profession while serving as a mentor for middle school students through Austin Partners in Education and American Diabetes Association-sponsored summer camps. Volanda also organized

health education and career day presentations in Austin high schools. She was recognized for her work in coordinating health screening events with the school of social work in Korean communities in Austin. Volanda also participated in medical mission trips to Myanmar and Mexico.

Alyeshka Jusino-Acosta - Alyeshka served as Vice President of the Hispanic Association of Student Pharmacists and as Regional Coordinator of the Know Your Medicine program. She has served as a Spanish-speaking translator for the American Heart Association’s “Go Red Por Tu Corazon,” a heart health awareness initiative to educate Latinas about heart disease and for the Lower Valley Health fair in El Paso where she provided medication education and planning to the community. She also participated in health screening and medication therapy management events arranged by other pharmacy student organizations, and assisted with College of Pharmacy student interviews and outreach activities.

Exemplary Leadership

Yana Maskov - Yana served as a member of the Pharmacy Council Executive Board, Training Leader for the Know Your Medicine Program and the Pharmacy Council Liaison to the Longhorn Pre-Pharmacy Association. She also served on the Ethics and Oversight Committee of the University of Texas Student Government and helped initiate the Longhorn as Partners mentoring program for first-generation, low-income, and/or underrepresented students.

Kenny Nguyen - Kenny served as the Local Exchange Officer of the American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) and as Co-Chair of the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation. He re-ceived an APhA High Five and Outstanding member award. Additionally, Kenny held several offices in state and na-tional pharmacy organizations and participated in an internship at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) in Chicago.

Mandy Renfro - Mandy served as Vice President and Founding Member of the UT College of Pharmacy chapter of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy. She also served as President of the Student Pharmacist Recovery Network (SPRN) and was Co-Chair of the Operation Naloxone Project. She also served on the University of Texas Committee on Sub-stance Safety and Overdose Prevention and implemented the first university-wide drug take back day. She was invited to speak at the Purdue College of Pharmacy about her work in SRPN and was asked by a local news outlet to talk about Operation Naloxone. Mandy participated in a competitive nonprofit leadership internship at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy in Alexandria, Virginia. Most recently, she was selected by the US Public Health Service to receive its Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Award.

Victoria Vuong - Victoria served as President and Co-founder of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School Chapter at the University of Texas at Austin. Through this effort, students from nursing, medicine, pharmacy, social work, and business now participate in quality improvement rounds and research at the Dell-Seton medical center. She

served as president of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International where she participated in a variety of fundraising and outreach activities including the Lunches of Love program and was a student mentor and case competition leader for the Student Industry Pharmacists Organization.

Pharmacy Alumni Association Mortar and Pestle Awards

Omar Fuentes - Omar served as Vice President of the UT Austin student chapter of the National Community Pharma-cists Association (NCPA) and was Team Co-Lead for the Texas Venture Labs Mentoring program. He placed third in the NCPA Good Neighbor Pharmacy Business Plan Competition and, as part of the Lester Entrepreneurial Scholars Program, was part of a team that presented the winning pitch at the Texas Health Catalyst competition for the devel-opment of inhaled antibiotics for the treatment of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections. His research in this area resulted in one publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Additionally, Omar also participated in several academic and service positions in the college during his time as a student.

Kaitlin Kennedy - In addition to earning one of the highest grade point averages (GPAs) in the 2020 University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy graduating Pharm.D. class, Kaitlin served as Vice President of the Student College of Clinical Pharmacy, treasurer for the Student Pharmacist Recovery Network and actively participated in several other organizations. Additionally, Kaitlin participated in a number of academic responsibilities/roles for the college. She was actively involved in several community outreach activities and placed first in the local AACP Clinical Skills Competition. She also helped with several research projects which resulted in three presentations at national meetings, two publica-tions in peer-reviewed journals and one manuscript under review for publication.

Lindsey Loera - Lindsey served as President of the Student Pharmacist Recovery Network (SPRN) and served as the Student Liaison for the University of Texas at Austin Center for Students in Recovery program where she worked with campus officials and the Department of Human Health Services to determine how government funding could be best utilized for college campuses. For this effort, she was the 2018 recipient of SPRN’s Albert Einstein award. She partici-pated in several mission trips to Myanmar and in 2019 assisted with the opening of a Continuation of Care clinic in the

Philippines as part of the Be the Change Global Outreach Program. She has coordinated numerous events on campus and in Austin to educate others about the opioid crisis, mental health and substance abuse. She participated in a variety of research projects with a focus on substance abuse and addiction which resulted in several presentations at local and national meetings. In 2019, she received a national US Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy award for creating a donation drive to benefit Austin’s homeless population.

President

Ryan Shaw - In fall 2017, Ryan worked as Pharmacy Intern Stagecoach Pharmacy Kyle, Texas. He served as IPE Co-lumbia Heights Health Fair Community Liaison. Ryan was IPC Care Program Student Liaison (Sodalis Buda). Rotation Region: San Antonio. His Rotation Electives were Corporate Management (H-E-B); Hematology/Oncology (Audie L. Murphy VAH); and Psychiatric Medicine (San Antonio State Hospital).

Vice President

Michelle Tran - Michelle Tran initially started her pharmacy career working as a certified pharmacy technician at Walmart Pharmacy prior to attending the College of Pharmacy. Since then, she has worked in a variety of settings including an independent compounding pharmacy and a psychiatric facility. In her time at the college, she has led a free primary

care clinic servicing homeless families in San Antonio, worked on a team to provide basic bleeding control training to the public, volunteered with Hurricane Harvey relief, and conducted research with her fellow classmates regarding nal-oxone availability and gender affirming therapy education. She also has held numerous leadership positions, including co-founding a social group known as Taco Club in the San Antonio region to promote bonding with classmates and to support local businesses. Michelle will be a PGY1 pharmacy resident at Methodist Dallas Medical Center following graduation and hopes to pursue her clinical interests in internal medicine and transplant.

Secretary/Treasurer

Victoria Vuong - Victoria Vuong was born and raised in Houston, Texas where she discovered interest in patient care, music, and volunteering. She is currently an advisor to the first Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Chapter in Austin, an interprofessional organization dedicated to empowering health professionals to promote patient safety and participate in quality improvement projects/research. Formerly, she served as President and Co-Founder of the IHI Chapter at Austin, President of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International, and Pharmacy Class Representative. In addition, she worked as an Advanced Academic Assistant and participated in various academic standing committees. Following graduation, she will be completing an industry fellowship in Global Regulatory Affairs at Sanofi Genzyme. Overall, Victoria is committed to improving patient-provider relationships and access to care for all populations through engaging with other professionals, creating innovative projects, teaching others, and working with a team to enact large-scale changes.

Sandra Leal, Pharm.D., MPH, CDE, FAPhAChief Executive Officer, SinfoniaRxTabula Rasa HealthCare, Executive Vice President

Sandra Leal is the Chief Executive Officer of SinfoniaRX and Executive Vice President for Tabula Rasa HealthCare. Dr. Leal is responsible for oversight and forward-thinking expansion of pharmacists’ services that focus on outcomes, ac-cess, and quality.

Dr. Leal received her Pharm.D. from the University of Colorado and her MPH in Public Health Practice from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Leal completed her residency at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System and a Primary Health Care Policy Fellowship with the Department of Health and Human Ser-vices. Her work has been published in Diabetes Care, Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease, American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, Journal of the American Phar-macists Association, Annals of Internal Medicines and a discussion paper published

by the Institute of Medicine entitled, “Patients and Health Care Teams Forging Effective Partnerships”.

Her programs are two-time recipients of the American Pharmacists Associations (APhA) Foundation Pinnacle Award, ASHP Best Practice Award in Health-System Pharmacy and the National Association of Community Health Centers Innovative Research in Primary Care Award. Dr. Leal was recognized as APhA’s Good Government Pharmacist-of-the-Year for her advocacy work on pharmacist provider status and will be installed as President-Elect for the American Pharmacists Association for the 2020-2022 term.

A residency is a postgraduate training program that allows the resident to perform as a licensed practitioner while training under the supervision of an experienced preceptor. During the program, the resident develops skills and competencies in providing pharmaceutical care to patients in a variety of clinical settings thus accelerating professional growth beyond entry-level experience. Kristin Janzen is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. After graduating from UT College of Pharmacy in 2015, she completed a combined 24-month combined PGY1&2 Pharmacotherapy residency at Butler University and Indiana University Health in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she stayed on faculty for a year prior to returning home to the UT College of Pharmacy. She currently practices at Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas in Internal Medicine, where she

precepts APPE students and residents on academic internal medicine rotations. Her research and teaching focuses on core medicine disease states, such as pulmonology, cardiology, and diabetes, residency preparation, and interprofessional education.

Today’s virtual ceremony is the first of two opportunities to celebrate completion of the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree. Tonighy the College of Pharmacy joins schools and colleges from all disciplines for the university-wide 137th Spring Virtual Commencement begins at 9 p.m. CDT. Dr. Brené Brown will present the commencement address. Dr. Brené Brown, BSW ‘95, is a research professor at the University of Houston where she holds the Huffington Foundation – Brené Brown Endowed Chair at The Graduate College of Social Work.

She has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy and is the author of five #1 New York Times bestsellers: The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, Braving the Wilderness, and her latest book, Dare to Lead, which is the culmination of a seven-year study on courage and leadership.

Brené’s TED talk – The Power of Vulnerability – is one of the top five most viewed TED talks in the world with over 35 million views. She is also the first researcher to have a filmed talk on Netflix. The Call to Courage special debuted on the streaming service on April 19, 2019.

Brené lives in Houston, Texas with her husband, Steve. They have two children, Ellen and Charlie.
