out about the application process, their scholarship process, and DEADLINES! - NC Deadlines

College Application Process❏ Some colleges require essays. Always do the “optional” essay or

personal statement if they have one.❏ View the essay as an opportunity.

❏ The student’s chance to sell themselves to the admissions

committee and let them know more personal information.

❏ Questions to help you start thinking about a “personal statement.”❏ What makes you different?

❏ What experiences have shaped who you are?

❏ What mistakes have you made and what have you learned?

College Application Process

❏ Recommendations❏ Needed for some college applications and many scholarships.

❏ Ask recommender if they are willing to write recommendation.

❏ Give recommender a copy of the Activity Sheet AND Brag Sheet

❏ Student should give recommender at least two weeks notice.

❏ It’s recommended to waive the right to read the letter.

❏ A lot of recommendations now ask for an email address. Follow up

with recommender to make sure they received the request. (SPAM)

❏ Follow up with the recommender and thank them for their letter.

College Application Process ❏ NC Residency Determination Service (RDS)

❏ https://ncresidency.org - RDS Website❏ Students must complete RDS if they want to be considered for

In-State Tuition at Public Universities or for State Grants at Private Universities in North Carolina.

❏ Students must complete RDS to have a complete application at most North Carolina Colleges/Universities.

❏ Students will use their CFNC username and password to log in.❏ Recommended students complete RDS before submitting their

scholarships in which students qualify.❏ Visit the scholarship and financial aid websites for each college to

know about their process and deadlines.❏ Separate scholarship applications

❏ Interviews

❏ Ask counselors to schedule mock interviews before the real thing.❏ Write great essays and have someone proofread before submitting.❏ Stay on top of deadlines. Don’t wait till the last minute. ❏ Beware of scholarship scams!

❏ Students should never pay for scholarship information.

❏ STEM Scholarship w/ Research Opportunities - $6,000

❏ GC Promise - covers all in-state tuition and fees not covered by financial aid or

other scholarships for two years for all eligible Gaston County high school

graduates.

❏ 3.25 GPA

❏ 15 CCP credit hours

❏ C or better in all CCP courses

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) www.fafsa.gov

Paying For College / Financial Aid❏ Student AND Parent should create a FSA ID before beginning the FAFSA

❏ The FSA ID is how you log in and sign the FAFSA. www.fsaid.ed.gov

❏ FAFSA is now available beginning October 1st of senior year.❏ Fill out the 2022-2023 School year FAFSA❏ “Prior Prior Year” (PPY) - Class of 2022 will use 2020 tax info.

❏ Must include both student and parent tax information and savings.❏ Use the IRS data retrieval tool when filling out the FAFSA.❏ EFC = Expected Family Contribution

❏ Colleges use the EFC to create a financial aid package for the student.

❏ Cost: A $25.00 fee & $16.00 for each additional college.

❏ Special Circumstances - Contact each college Fin Aid office directly

❏ Things that can’t be documented when completing the FAFSA.

❏ Changes in employment, medical expenses, marital status, etc.

❏ If students are planning on playing sports in college they must register with the NCAA through the NCAA Eligibility Center.

❏ Eligibility is based on GPA in 16 Core Courses and SAT/ACT scores.❏ Cost to register is $90.00❏ Submit Transcript - Counselor❏ HST NCAA Presentation

Sports In College❏ Students should not wait for schools to recruit them.

❏ Most colleges have online recruitment forms on their athletics page.

❏ Students can send a cover letter and Sports Activity Sheet/Resume to

college coaches.

❏ Make sure students have realistic goals.

❏ Talk to the student’s coach to determine what division level the

student can play at in college. (Division I,II,III, NAIA, Jr. College)

❏ Use CFNC and choose College Search > Intercollegiate Sports

Final Tips for Seniors and Parents

❏ NEVER create a duplicate account.

❏ Students should consider sharing username and password with parents.

❏ Save username and password in google drive so Counselors can help.❏ CFNC, CollegeBoard, Common App, College Portals, Fastweb, FAFSA, etc.

❏ Parents don’t do the application for the student!

❏ Students should use their own email when applying.

❏ Have your student add you to google classroom to get emailed updates each week. (It’s best to have student’s login information so you can see everything.)
