  • At the end of the session you will be able to:Understand the importance of good manners.Learn some new manners.Brush up some of the manners you had forgotten.

  • Definition Good manners are based on the concept of respecting others. This includes treating others courteously and being respectful of their rights.

  • ImportanceGood manners promote good will and harmony. Nice matters. And nice is nothing but demonstrated politeness.Manners is paying attention to or being considerate of others.Good manners are infectious.

  • If you are a student, here are some situations that deserve your attention not only when you are in a college setting, but every time the situation requires:

  • Some Manners to practice Turn off your cell phone when you enter a class. No one cares for your conversation and having to hear it is a great imposition. When you are coming down the stairs, pay attention to those going up. If you are talking to someone and therefore are descending in double line, those going up may have no room.

  • Some Manners to practice Even if you have not being introduced to them officially, greet your classmates if you meet them somewhere else on campus. Likewise, greet your professors and other staff from your department.

  • Some Manners to practice Avoid wearing objectionable clothes, especially T-shirts with writings on them. They may be funny to you but insulting to others. For example: FBI- Female Body Inspector, "So many boys, so little time," etc.

  • Some Manners to practice Groom yourself. Take a shower every day, comb your hair, and wear a deodorant. On the other hand, avoid marinating yourself in lotions and perfumes. Someone may be allergic to strong smells.

  • Some Manners to practice While holding an umbrella, make sure you are not drenching the next person, especially under heavy rain. Hold the door to the person following you. This is a gesture that goes a long way.

  • Some Manners to practice Thank the person who held the door open for you. It is good to feel appreciated. If you happen to make eye contact with someone, smile. You never know how much the other person needed a little warmth.

  • Some Manners to practice Thank the person who just left a spot for you in the parking lot. Keep your music to yourself. Blasting music from other people's phone / I pod can be very annoying Always flush the toilet and wash your hands.

  • Some Manners to practice Knock at your professor's office door; wait until you are allowed in, and greet your professor. When you leave the office, thank the person, say good-bye and close the door behind you.

  • Some Manners to practice Let older people get in the elevator ahead you. Let others come out of the elevator before you go in. Likewise, let others come out of the classroom before you come in. Wait until the professor leaves the classroom as well.

  • Some Manners to practice

Always put your chair back in its original position before leaving the classroom, in case you moved it. Toss your garbage in the trash can.

  • In the end:While practicing good manners you will be greatly enhancing the happiness of everyone around you, including yours. It costs nothing to be polite and the rewards are so big.
