INTRODUCTIONThishandbookismeanttoprovideanarrayofmeaningfultipsandvaluableresourcestoVonSteubenMetropolitanScienceCenterstudentsandparents.Theinformationprovidedwillhelptoanswerquestionsthatoftenariseasstudentsbegintoconsidertheiroptionsforcollegeandwillmakestudentsawareoftheirrightsandresponsibilities.WhilecollegepreparationisafocusatallgradelevelsatVonSteuben,theprocessofpreparingandplanningcomestotheforefrontduringthe junioryear. POST-SECONDARYOPTIONSYou can learn about colleges by reviewing each school’swebsite or catalogue. Youmay alsoviewbooksandotherpublishedmaterialstogetanoverviewofschoolswhichinterestyou.Thereare a varietyofopportunities forpostsecondaryeducationwhichare available to you.Considersomeofyouroptions:

College: Aninstitutionofhighereducationthatgrantsdegrees and certificates. The term is also used todesignate the organizational units of a university suchas the College of Education or the College ofEngineering.

University:Anacademicinstitutionwhichiscomposedofundergraduateandgraduatedegreesinavarietyoffields.Itiscomposedofanumberof“schools”or“colleges,”eachofwhichencompassesageneralfieldofstudy.

Liberal Arts College: A four-year institution which emphasizes a program of broadundergraduateeducation.Pre-professionaltrainingmaybeavailablebutisnotstressed.

CommunityCollege:AlsocalledJuniorCollege.Atwo-yearinstitutionofhigherlearningwhich provides career and vocational training and academic curricula (terminal andtransfer).Manycommunitycollegesofferassociate’sdegrees.

TerminalProgram:Anacademicprogramthatiscompleteuntoitself.Astudentwhocompletes itmaynotbeadmittedtoa four-yearcollege for furtherstudywithoutcompletingadditionalcourserequirements.

TransferProgram:Anacademicprogramthatisdesignedtoleadintoafour-yearprogramatanothercollegeoruniversity. Thetwo-yeargraduatetransfersasajuniortothefour-yearinstitution.

EngineeringorTechnicalCollege: Independentprofessional schools thatprovide four-yeartrainingprogramsinthefieldsofengineeringandthephysicalsciences.Theyareoftenknownasinstitutesoftechnologyorpolytechnicinstitutes.

Technical School:A two-year institutionwhich offers terminal occupational programsintended to prepare students for immediate employment in fields related to

engineering and the physical sciences. These schools may also offer a one-yearcertificateprogramincertaincraftsandclericalskills.

NursingSchool:Therearethreekindsofnursingschools. Atschoolsaffiliated with hospitals, students receive an RN (Registered Nurse)diploma upon successful completion of training and stateexamination. At schools affiliated with four-year colleges, studentsreceive both a BS (Bachelor of Science) degree and an RN diploma.Communitycollegesandjuniorcollegesmayofferatwo-yearnursingprogram.TheseschoolsconferanAS(Associates)degreeinnursing.

Military School: Federal military academies prepare officers for the ARMY, Navy, AirForce, and Merchant Marines. These institutions require recommendations andnomination by U.S. senators or U.S. representatives. Private and state-supportedmilitary institutions, however, operate on a college application basis as does theU.S.CoastGuardAcademy.Theyallofferdegreeprograms inengineering, technologyandmanyothermajorswithconcentrationinvariousaspectsofmilitaryscience.

BusinessSchool:Atsomecollegesitispossibletospecializeinbusinessadministrationorinatwo-yearsecretarialcourseinconjunctionwithsupplementalliberalartscourses.Otherinstitutionsofferbusinessorsecretarialcoursesprimarilyandmayormaynotberegionallyaccredited.

Trade School: Trade schools offer specialized study in areas such as cosmetology,computer technology, medical or dental technology, culinaryarts,anddrafting.

ProfessionalSchool:Thistypeofschooloffersspecializedstudyinareassuchasart,music,drama,dance,photography,etc.

Collegeswhich require a veryhighgradepointaverageandaveryhighSATorACTscoreare considered very selective in their admissions.OthercollegesmayonlyrequiregraduationfromhighschoolorlowerSAT/ACTscores.Theseschoolshavelowerselectivityandsomehaveopenadmissions.Itisimportantthatyoutrytomatchyouracademicabilitiestotheselectivityofacollege.Ifyouare a very good student, a more selective college may offer you the appropriate level ofstimulationandchallenge.Ifyouracademicrecordisnotasstrong,alessselectiveschoolmaybeabetterfitforyourneeds.Whateveryourcredentialsmaybe,it isbestforyoutoidentifycolleges that match your academic profile. The total cost for a year, ascomputed by the college financial aid office, includes tuition, fees, room and board, books,supplies,transportation,andpersonalexpenses.Astudent’stotalcostsmayrangefrom$1,000atacommunitycollegeto$40,000+foraprivatecollege.Whileitisimportanttoconsidercost,donotlimityourcollegechoicestoonlythoseyouwillbeabletoaffordwithoutfinancialassistance. Manyofthemoreexpensiveprivateschoolshavegoodfinancialaidprograms.Dependingonyourneed,theschoolsmayofferanywherefrom20percenttothefullcost inassistance. Although a certain environment may seemdesirable, it isalso important toconsiderhow itwill affectyourexperienceasa studentandcommunitymember.Forexample,collegesoruniversitieslocatedintheheartofabigcityareoftencomprisedofmultistoryclassroombuildingsandhigh-risedormitories.Incontrast,thereare many colleges and universities in rural settings with widespread campuses which arelocatedmanymiles from the nearest metropolitan areas. Howiseligibilitydetermined?The NCAA computes a grade point average based on 16 core academic courses that arerequired foreligibility. Thesecourses include4yearsofEnglish,3yearsofmath (Algebraorhigher),2yearsofnatural/physicalscience(oneyearlabscience),1yearofadditionalEnglish,math,orphysicalscience,2yearsofsocialscience,and4yearsofadditionalcourses(foreignlanguage,nondoctrinalreligion/philosophy,oranyoftheothersubjectsabove).Classestakenineighthgrademaynotbeusedtosatisfythecore-curriculumrequirementsregardlessoftheircontentorlevel.ThespecificcourserequirementsforeligibilitytoparticipateinDivisionIdifferfromthoserequireatDivisionII,whichrequiresfewercourses.InordertobeeligibleattheDivisionIlevel,astudentmustachieveacertainstandardizedtestscoredependingonwhathisorhercorecourseGPAis.Thetestscorerequirementsarebasedonaslidingscale,acopyofwhichmaybefoundateligbilitycenter.org.Forexample,astudentwitha3.25GPAwouldneedatotalsumscoreof46onthefoursectionsoftheACT,oranSATof520.Astudentwitha3.0GPAwouldneeda52or620respectively,a2.5GPAa68or820,andsoon.ThescalecoversallpossibleGPAsfrom3.55downtoa2.0.AstudentMUSThaveaminimumof a 2.0GPA to be eligible regardless of test score. OfficialstandardizedtestscorereportsmustbesenttoNCAAusingtheEligibilityCentercode9999. Students are allowed tomix andmatch their sub scores to achieve the best possiblescore. For example, if a student took the ACT three times, they could use their overall bestmath,reading,English,andsciencetogetthetotalscoreneededontheslidingscalebasedontheir GPA. Completeandsubmitapplicationstomorethanonecollegeunlessyouareabsolutelysureofadmission, matriculation, and an overall successful undergraduate experience at this onecollege. After consultation with their counselor, students should group applications in thefollowingcategories(individualcircumstancesvary):

Earlyapplicantsoften receivemoreattentionthanapplicantsjustmeetingthedeadline.Asaresult,firstapplicantsmayhavean edgewhen it comes to admission. Such is especially true of “rolling admission process”colleges. It is suggested thatallout-of-statepublicuniversities’applicationsbe submittedasearlyinthefallofsenioryearaspossible,andnolaterthantheendofOctober.TaketimewithyourapplicationsMake sure they are neat and correct. Always print neatly if submitting a paper copy. It isimpossibletobetooneatbuteasytobecarelessandmakeapoorimpression.Explainanycircumstancesaffectingyourhighschoolperformance,whyyouchosetoapply,andclarifyyourspecialtalentsandextracurricularactivitiesifappropriate.AstrongessayisveryimportantMany colleges require an essay as part of the college application. It is important to be honest, thorough, attentive todirections,concise,andneatwhencompletingtheapplication.Itisimportantthatthestudentkeepacopyofeveryapplicationtheysubmitfortheirrecords.

2. Writetheessay/personalstatement(ifrequired).Manycolleges(especiallyhighlyselectivecolleges)willaskthestudenttowriteanessayorpersonal statement. Theadmissionofficehopes to learnmoreabout the student,assess their writing ability, grammar, spelling, as well as their ability to answer thequestion.Collegeswanttheessaytoreflectthestudent,theirinterestsandvalues.Itwill be used to better understand how the student thinks andwrites. The essaywillrequire a great deal of time and effort. This is your chance to put your “best footforward”withoutboasting. It isstronglysuggestedthateitheryourEnglishteacheroryour counselor review and critique your essay before it is submitted. Remember tokeepacopyforyourrecords.

3. Obtainteacherrecommendations(ifneeded).

Some colleges will require one or two teacher recommendations to support yourapplication.

- Selectteachersthatknowyouwellandwillwriteapositiverecommendationaboutyou. - Ask the teacher inperson if theywillwritea letteror recommendation for you. This

7. Releaseofficialtestscores.Von Steuben sends a copy of your standardized testing recordwith each official highschool transcript. It is the student’s responsibility to release his or her “official” testscoredirectlytoeachcollegeoruniversity.Thiscanbedoneatthetimeofregistrationor testing (with the initial test fee, a student has the option to send four free scorereports to colleges) or after the test by contacting the testing agencies online (seebelow)torequeststhescorereporttobesenttothecollegesoruniversitiesofchoice.Students are encouraged to communicate with the testing agencies directly, thussendingofficialscorestoeverycollege.Thisisyourassurancethatthehighestormostrecenttestscoreswillbesentintheshortesttimeframe.

ACT:TheAmericanCollegeTestisoneoftwocollegeadmissiontests.Itispreferredbycollegesin theMidwest, although all accept bothACT or SAT I. An early-decision admission allows you to knowwhere youwill enroll for college almost sixmonthsbeforeyouactuallygraduate fromVonSteuben. If youarenotadmittedearly, yourapplication is deferred for final decision in April. There is a binding agreement if you areaccepted to your early-decision college. Upon your acceptance to this college, all otherapplicationssubmittedelsewheremustbeimmediatelywithdrawn.Although early-decision offers many advantages, you should realize that there are alsopotential disadvantages to taking this option. CLEP (College Level Entrance Exam): The College Level Examination Program can beadministered to students who desire to obtain college credit by taking proficiency tests inselectedcourses.Ifthestudentscoreshighenoughonthetest,collegecreditcanbeawarded.Thereisachargeforeachtesttaken.Informationconcerninganindividualinstitution’spoliciestowardCLEPTestscanbefoundintheinstitution’scatalog.College:Aninstitutionofhighereducationthatgrantsdegreesandcertificates.Thetermisalsoused todesignate theorganizationalunitsofauniversitysuchas theCollegeofEducationortheCollegeofEngineering.Commonapplication:ThestandardapplicationformdistributedbytheNationalAssociationofSecondarySchoolPrincipalstoprivatecollegeswhoaresubscriberstotheCommonApplicationGroup.Manynon-subscribingcollegesalsoacceptthecommonapplication.CommunityCollege:AlsocalledJuniorCollege.Atwo-yearinstitutionofhigherlearningwhichprovidescareerandvocationaltrainingandacademiccurricula(terminalandtransfer).

Commuter:Astudentwholivesoff-campusanddrivestoclassorcommutes.CostofAttendance(COA):Ingeneral,thisincludesthetuitionandfeesnormallyassessedtoastudent,togetherwiththeinstitution’sestimateofthecostofroomandboard,transportationandcommutingcosts,booksandsupplies,andmiscellaneouspersonalexpenses. Inaddition,student loan fees, dependent care, reasonable costs for a study abroad or cooperativeeducationprogram,and/orcostsrelatedtoadisabilitymaybeincludedwhenappropriate(alsoreferredtoascostofeducationorbudget). ExpectedFamilyContribution(EFC):Theamountastudentandhisorherfamilyareexpectedto pay toward the student’s COA as calculated from information on the FAFSA. FinancialAid:Generaltermthatdescribesanysourceofstudentassistanceoutsidethestudentor thestudent’s family. Aid ismadeavailable fromgrants, scholarships, loans,andpart-timeemployment from federal, state, institutional, and private sources. Awards from theseprogramsmaybecombinedinan“awardpackage”tomeetthecostofeducation. Thetypesand amounts of aid awarded are determined by financial need, available funds, studentclassification,academicperformance,andsometimesthetimelinessofapplication.Financial Aid Package: The financial aid award to a student comprised of a combination offormsof financial aid (loans, grantsor scholarships, andemployment). Students customarilynotifiedoftheiraidpackagebyreceivinganawardletter.Financial Need Equation: COA minus EFC equals financial need (COA – EFC = Need). Thedeterminationofneedviathisequationiscentraltotheentireaidapplicationprocess.Fraternities/Sororities: Fraternities (for men) and sororities (for women) are socialorganizations active on campus. Through a process of mutual selection called Rush (whichtakes place during a specified period of time), students may be offered the opportunity to“pledge” a certain fraternity or sorority. Not all colleges have these organizations. TheseorganizationsarefrequentlyreferredtoastheGreekSystem.Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): A detailed form that is the first step inapplying for federal financialaid,offeredbytheU.S.DepartmentofEducation. Petition: The process and the form a student fills out to request consideration of specialcircumstances.Forexample,ifastudentisdeniedadmission,theymaypetitionforadmissionbasedonextenuatingcircumstances.Placement Tests: Tests given prior to admission used to recommend students to theappropriateclasslevel.Principal:Theamountofmoneyborrowedforaloan.Interestischargedonthisamount.Private/Public Institutions: Private and public institutions differ primarily in terms of theirsource of financial support. Public institutions receive funding from the state or othergovernmental entities and are administered by public boards.
