from the principal After nearly three years of investigation, consultation, planning, briefing of architects, applying for building permits, and seeking VCAT approval, at last we are very close to commencing the biggest building project in the modern history of Clarendon – a new Science Centre. The tender procedure concluded nearly two weeks ago, with the appointment of a builder expected to be completed within the next few weeks. One thing I have learnt as a Principal is that building projects inevitably take much longer than my impatient vision!!! The centre will be built on the corner of Ajax and Murray Streets, and the design process has seen a Clarendon team visit educational institutions in Australia, Britain and the United States to ascertain the most contemporary designs possible. This building is an opportunity to provide our students with 21st-Century facilities within which they will have their imaginations fired and engage with science in a way that inspires awe and wonder in the way the world works. The design incorporates five separate laboratory areas that are complemented by seven teaching spaces. There is also a 90-seat demonstration space that will provide opportunities for lectures to larger groups of students. To complete the facility, a vertical laboratory (which the school is designing in partnership with Dr Roger Rassool from the Physics Department of the University of Melbourne) will be available in which all disciplines can conduct experiments, with the entrance of the centre featuring a Foucault Pendulum. This pendulum, named after the French physicist Léon Foucault, is a simple device conceived as an experiment to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth. While it had long been known that the Earth rotated, the introduction of the Foucault Pendulum in 1851 was the first simple proof of the rotation in an easy-to-see experiment. I have included the following plans so as to give students and parents an idea of what this wonderful facility will look like when it is completed late in 2014.

Our community will be able to maintain a watch on the progress of the building as we have mounted time-lapse cameras that will be accessible through our website. This is a very exciting time for Clarendon, and the place of Science within our educational offering, and I cannot wait to finally watch the first sod turned in what has been a long wait, but a wait that I believe will be very worthwhile. senior school The past two weeks have included two significant events in the Senior School calendar. On Saturday 11 May, we celebrated the Year 11 Presentation Ball. Our Year 11 students dazzled us with their newly acquired dance moves, in what was a highly enjoyable night. I would like to publicly thank:

• Parents and Friends Association in particular, Lynn Hadfield, Debra Douglas, Michelle Krieg and Fiona Emery

• Ross Henderson • The Mercure, ANT Productions • Year 11 House Teachers • Eric Langdon who taught our students with such enthusiasm and patience.

On Friday 17 May, we also held our annual Year 12 Formal. This was held in our new Multi-Purpose Pavilion and the theme for this night was “Famous Figures”. The 145 students and 14 staff had a terrific night dancing to the tunes provided by Year 12 student Jordan Walder. I would like to thank our Senior Leadership team of Alana Ryan, Charlie Renney, Harriet McKindlay and Alex Nash, along with our Formal Committee, who worked very hard to make this night so special for all of us. A special thanks must go to Christy Prato who did a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure the night was successful. A further thank you must go to John and Marea Bourke. Their photo booth was a massive hit and the album will provide great entertainment when these students come back for reunions in the future. Also to Shane Corless who offered his security expertise on the night. Over the past few weeks our Unit 3/4 students have completed surveys relating to their classes. Their responses have proved to be an invaluable tool in highlighting our areas of strength and those that need improvement and I would like to publicly acknowledge the conscientious manner in which our students engaged in the process. One of the trends in the results was that some of our students feel that they do not know how to revise effectively all of the time. This is similar to a trend that we have seen in the past, and trends in the wider educational community. Effective revision skills take time and effort to cultivate. This year we have worked throughout the Senior School to make our students more aware of what the research informs us are effective and ineffective revision strategies. This information has been shared through our Health and Wellbeing sessions, Year 12 meetings, in House and in the classroom. The timing of this is pertinent not only for our Year 12 students, but also our Year 10 and 11 students who are about to enter into the examination period and, as parents seeking to support your sons and daughters at home, I thought some of the research findings may be of interest to you: Earlier this year, the Association of Psychological Science released a comprehensive report on the effectiveness of 10 learning strategies and rated each from high to low utility on the basis of a comprehensive review of evidence. Their key findings were as follows:

• Commonly used strategies, such as underlining, highlighting, rereading materials, and using mnemonic devices are surprisingly ineffective

• More effective strategies involved more cognitively demanding tasks, such as: o Practising answering questions, by taking practice tests or being quizzed (for the purpose

of identifying gaps in knowledge and understanding) o Developing flash cards, posters, visual aids o Teaching other people about the content o Spreading study sessions out over time, known as distributed practice (rather than

cramming)

These findings have been shared with all students in the Senior School but it is a challenge for our students to change their study habits. You can assist at home by asking students about what they have learned and monitoring their study habits. As was mentioned at Assembly on Friday, the main purpose of the Year 10 and Year 11 examinations is to assist in their development of effective revision and examination techniques that will assist them in Year 12 and beyond. Therefore, after the examination period is over each class will spend time reflecting on the strategies that proved to be effective and those that were ineffective so that our students can refine their strategies before their next examination period at the end of the year. If you would like any more information on the report a summary can be found here: http://www.psychologicalscience.org/index.php/publications/journals/pspi/learning-techniques.html Laura Brady Acting Co-Head of Senior School Return to menu

middle school House Spelling Bee House Spelling Bee is one of the favourite events on the Middle School calendar. This year Ross House won which was a nice reward for all of the effort they’d put in to learning the words. Mr Matthew Yau runs this event and his high levels of passion and exuberance ensures all and sundry get fully involved in this popular event. Attached are some photos of the final which was played out at a special Spelling Bee Assembly in front of the entire Middle School. It is events such as these that make the Middle School a fun place to be. House Football At the time of writing we are halfway through the House Football competition. This event sees boys and girls battling it out on the same field for their beloved House. Each day this week a different year level plays across lunch and Study. The Waters House student leaders, led by Hannah Gulline and Harrison Wrigglesworth, have done a tremendous job of bringing this event to bear. If the red, muddy faces at the end of the game count for anything then they’re having a wonderful time. In the coming weeks our House competition moves into trivia and the annual Lap of the Lake. District athletics and cross-country Cassandra Hobbs has been busy with some of our Middle Schoolers at various interschool sporting competitions. Today was athletics – results are yet to come in but once we hear they’ll be passed on. Last Friday the Division Cross Country Championships were held. Cassandra has prepared the following report: Division Cross Country Championships On Friday 17 May some of our talented Ballarat Clarendon College students took part in the second stage (division level) of our interschool cross country competition. This involved competing against schools all around the Ballarat region. Students were competing for a place in the regional championships which are held in Hamilton this year. Ballarat turned on its typical “cross country weather” with a cool breeze and some light rain, but that didn’t bother our College runners. Some fantastic individual performances mean that some of our students will now go on to compete at the regional level in Hamilton on June 19. Congratulations and good luck to the following students in their respective age groups; Matilda Pearce (3rd), Olivia Moneghetti (4th) and Ben Fritch (6th). Well done to Ruby DeRuiter, Katie Ling, Sophie Grylewicz, Zoe Cowan, Stevie Clarke, Edwina Eppingstall, Ellie Kauffmann and Annie Blenkiron who also competed very well on the day; BCC were very well represented by some committed and talented athletes. NAPLAN Last week every student in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9, sat the NAPLAN test. Feedback from the students was that they felt well prepared and believed they did their best. That is all we ask of our Middle Schoolers and we can confidently say we were proud of their efforts. We look forward to receiving the results as they will provide us with feedback about where we need to direct our energies to maximise the learning for each of our students. Hansel and Gretel – a PNG fundraiser This Sunday May 26th, Onyx Players theatre company present Hansel and Gretel. The performance has been organised by Year 8 student Briony Donald as a fundraiser for the 2013 Papua New Guinea Project. This will prove to be a wonderful show for all ages and I strongly encourage you to come along and support this event. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door. There are two shows: 10am and 1pm in the Senior Lecture Theatre Click here for poster Protect-a-Child - an exciting initiative for families of Year 8 students As part of our ongoing work to assist our community in managing the challenges that the rapid development of technology creates, Ballarat Clarendon College will be trialing a new initiative called “ProtectaChild”. ProtectaChild is an app which allows parents to better support and manage their children’s online interactions. It is a tool which allows parents to be notified if suspicious activity is noted through social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace and Bebo. It therefore provides the opportunity for parents to have informed conversations with their children about their use of social

media, and for parents to work cooperatively with the school and other parents to help children learn to use social media appropriately. The school has made the decision to run this trial with the whole year 8 group, believing that these students are old enough to be utilising the types of applications that might cause issues, but young enough that they will be happy to willingly engage in the collaborative processes with parents that is required. The school will absorb the cost of the trial which will run over three months, and if successful access to the program will be incorporated into the fee schedule for students from year 5-10 in 2013. Parents will be asked to give feedback on the effectiveness of the program as the trial reaches its conclusion. The school would only want to proceed with the program if it proves to be of value to parents in their managing of their children’s online presence and so your involvement and feedback is vital. Dean Griffin will be the primary contact at school for this program. We will be holding an information session for interested parents on Wednesday 22 May, from 6-7pm in the Library Conference Room. If you are unable to attend this meeting, but still have questions, please feel free to contact Dean at school. All Year 8 families have been contacted by e-mail with details of how to access Protect-a-Child. king island It’s a beautiful, sunny morning on King Island as our 44 students finish packing to head off on the Southern Challenge- a five day hike around the south coast of King Island. For most this will be their first experience at hiking for this period of time, and their enthusiasm and readiness for the challenge that lies ahead is commendable. It is no easy feat to load 15kgs onto your back, to walk through coastal bogs, along deep sandy beaches and navigate bushland, only to reach camp at the end of the day weary and ready to rest but with a myriad of tasks needing completion before you can even sit down for a minute. Digging toilets, making shelters, pitching tents, cooking on Trangia stoves and cleaning up again in the bush demands a new level of organisation above and beyond the tasks that have already been learned living in shared houses together. Chances are though, that they will complete their tasks with shared laughter and camaraderie and will head off to sleep in their tents feeling tired but satisfied with the day’s achievement. So, off to hike it is! Before I go - a few snapshots from the start of Term 2. Click here to view photos Jen Willis Head of KI Campus Return to menu

performing arts Free Brass Lessons The PAC is offering 2 free lessons to any students who would like to try out the Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium or French Horn. Please contact Helen at the PAC Office for further information and to sign up for your lessons. Guitar Soiree This year’s guitar soiree had a certain original flavour to it. All but three of the songs performed were written and performed by the students. They all showed great musicianship and bravery to show their own creations for the first time to an audience. Look out for an album out soon with all of these songs – thanks to Lyndon Kriss for the many hours of work in recording and coaching our songwriters. These CDs will be on sale to raise money for the PNG project. Click here for photos Mother’s Day Classic Fun run Three of our groups performed along the running track at the Mother’s Day fun run. Photos attached. Feet was at the starting line, helping the runners get ready, and Suburban Junkie and the Percussion Ensemble were placed around the track to keep the momentum going. The event itself raised money for the Cancer Council, and it was an honour for our students to be able to support it. Click here for photos Middle School Musical The Middle School Musical auditions are being held this week, and should shape up to be a wonderful show in September. VCE Showcases Last week and this week we have seen many students perform their end of Unit performances in Dance, Drama, Music Performance and Music Investigation. Performing to an audience is a wonderful opportunity to test out performance skills, ready for their end of Year final performances. Masquerade Ball Be sure not to miss out on a ticket to our Friends of Performing Arts Masquerade Ball. It will be held at Bray Raceway on Saturday 22 June. See the Performing Arts page on connect@clarendon for ticket information and book through Marea at Front Reception. sport BAS Athletics 2013 This year saw BCC field over one hundred competitors. It was pleasing to see those in the junior events have an opportunity to display their talents after a solid build up throughout term one. This willingness to train two nights of the week will ensure that we will be better placed as the years unfold. Special mention must be given to Courtney Scott and Stewart McSweyn who have had busy seasons both locally and internationally. Their efforts allowed others to witness the value of hard work and what level can be achieved in this forum. Both set new BAS records for their respective 3000m events. We also had some great winning results with Ben Newell Under 17 Triple Jump, Cody Grant Under 16 800m, Alyssa Britnell Under 16 1500m and Abraham Lawson Under 16 Shot Put. We still remain a work in progress and I urge all those athletes from 2013 to look ahead and know that we can make incremental inroads into developing a successful athletics team in the years to come. Peter Murnane Coach Senior Girls Netball A much improved effort on court by all this week lead to some great practice of structures and getting back to doing the basics well. We were also able to work on different combinations in all parts of the court in preparation for what will be considered our most important game of the season, needing a win against Grammar to ensure we can finish in the top 2. The highlights of the game were a solid 3 quarters by Year 9 student Makenna Ross and scoring over 60 goals in a game, as in previous games we have struggled to score 30. Kirsty O’Rourke Coach Senior Girls Football Our preparation leading into the Round 1 encounter against old rival Loreto had been extensive. Undoubtedly, beginning training before the end of Term One had been enormously beneficial. So many new players had joined the squad, and the experienced types had been desperate to take on the reigns of leading the club. Throughout the training sessions, the main focuses had been the absolute fundamentals of the game: hand and foot skills; use of voice; running in numbers; constant hard running; understanding ground positions and game style; and physicality. There was great anticipation going into the game. There was so much unknown. The last two years has seen a large number of quality players moving on, their time at the College having to come an end. In Round 1 2013, twelve players were making their debuts; thirteen players had experience, but so few had had substantial ground time in the past. Loreto had been a powerhouse in past seasons and was no doubt looking to recapture past glories. After initial nerves, BCC took the early advantage in the game, scoring 3 goals 2 behinds in the first quarter. BCC continued to dominate the scoreboard, with 2 goals 5 behinds in the second quarter, 2 goals 1 behind in the third, and a very pleasing 5 goals 7 behinds in the fourth. Do note that, although Loreto struggled on the scoreboard, they were physical at the contest. As one observer stated, “The scoreboard suggests BCC dominated, but effort was needed to dominate”. BCC ultimately won the contest 12- 15- 87 to 0- 1- 1. The next week, it was great to get back to training after the stirring Round 1 victory against Loreto. A mild day greeted us for the Wednesday session and the focus of the players was obvious. A project for the squad was its defensive work- carrying the ball forward offensively, but then pushing back defensively upon the ball being turned over to the opposition. Pushing back defensively requires quick reaction time, broad vision, instructional voice, and playing tightly. A highlight of the training session was the match simulation at the end, when an inexperienced Team Blue more than held its own against Team Red. This was a very encouraging sign for the club’s depth.

The Round 2 clash against Ballarat High School was going to be a challenging contest. BHS had re-entered the competition in 2012 in formidable style, pushing both ultimate Grand Finalists in BCC and BGS during the home-and-away rounds. What was more, this game was going to be up at BHS, the first away game there since the 2008 season. A strong start to send a message was essential, and pleasingly, BCC scored 5 goals 3 behinds in the first quarter. The ball was moved cleanly and rapidly from the centre to the Forward 50m zone, where the forwards had plenty of space in which to work. The second quarter also saw BCC hold the ascendancy with 3 goals 3 behinds, again keeping BHS scoreless. BCC scored 1 goal 1 behind in both of the third and fourth quarters. In this second half, our concentration dropped slightly early on, which allowed BHS some scoring opportunities. BHS also heavily crowded our forward line, making it difficult for BCC to score. BCC came away victors 10- 8- 68 to 1- 1- 7. This has been an immensely promising start to the season. The players, a mix of old and new, deserve enormous credit for their intensity and endeavour, and for their willingness to readily adapt to the demands of the team and the sport. James Couzens Coach Senior Boys Football SPC 8 – 8 – 56 Def BCC 5 – 6- 36 Goals: Sharrock, Wilson, Grant, McKenzie, Mason Best : McKenzie, Bennett, Mason, Webster, Harrison, Davidson, Fisher, Mabon Playing with College Spirit has been the hallmark of the strongest College sides over the years. College Spirit is an intangible quality that allows less ‘gifted’ players to overcome more fancied opposition. In the first two weeks I have seen College Spirit displayed at a level I haven’t seen for a number of years. Against both BGS and SPC I have seen us tackle, smother, chase and spoil at levels that has meant our opposition has started to succumb to the pressure. College Spirit is about never being beaten, it is about fighting hard in a contest – that’s what we must hold each other accountable to. If we play with College Spirit, our structure holds up because we can kick it forward to a contest with confidence, that if our team mate doesn’t win the contest, they’ll fight hard to keep it there. We have BHS next week. We need to train and prepare well for this in order to continue to prime ourselves for a massive game against Grammar, and then of course the one we’re all waiting for - another crack at SPC. Shaune Moloney Co-Coach

Senior Boys Soccer Ballarat Clarendon College 1 v Ballarat Grammar 2 Goal: Josh Wilson-Brown Best players: Joe O’Donnell, Kevin Shumba, Josh Wilson-Browne This was an unfortunate defeat against a solid Grammar side in difficult conditions. The match began in driving rain, and on a sodden, bumpy pitch both sides found it difficult to create chances. Joe O’Donnell came closest, but his close range effort was blocked by the keeper. We were unlucky to have a penalty claim turned down after Ethan Etheridge appeared to be tripped in the box. Although it was a close first half, College had slightly the better of it, and this paid off just after the half-time interval. On 35 minutes Josh Wilson Brown’s chipped effort from the edge of the box looped over the goalkeeper, giving us a 1-0 lead. This proved to be short lived though, as Grammar equalised from the penalty spot. Grammar made it 2-1 with ten minutes to go, with the ball agonisingly trickling over the goal line following a penalty box scramble. Despite a spirited fight back, the score line finished 2-1 to Grammar. We were disappointed not to have come away with at least a point in a game of fine margins that we could easily have won. I was, however, impressed by the hard-working overall performance, and it is encouraging to see the Year 10 players continuing to develop and blend in with the older heads. This is an outstanding effort by the boys. Be sure to congratulate the boys if you see them around College and wish them good luck for their events. Launch of Herald Sun Shield Last week Ruby Parry – the girls Captain of Football and Jackson Fisher, my sports assistant, attended the launch of the new look 2013 Herald Sun Shield campaign. A number of Melbourne and Ballarat schools attended the function and the opening address was given by AFL ambassador and current Richmond captain Trent Cotchin. Ruby was most impressed by the down to earth nature and friendly demeanour of Trent Cotchin and relished the opportunity to speak with him one on one. She was thrilled to be asked to attend the launch and in particular to walk over the hallowed turf and be involved in a photo shoot with other school captains. Both of our teams will once again be involved in Herald Shield competitions this year. More details will follow when they come to hand. Click here for photos Individual Students

Sophie Byrne - Year 8 from the Ballarat Courier “Golf runs in the family for Sophie Byrne. The 12-year-old Ballarat Golf Club member enjoyed a hot few days on the course in April when she beat her mother Simone in the Ballarat Golf Club’s Anzac Day Stableford competition with 40 points, before following it up with a second place in the women’s par competition on Saturday.

Byrne went one better the very next day, when she won the girls section of the Ballarat Associated Schools golf competition with 33 points at Creswick’s Forest Resort championship course. “I played well, but the course was very tough and hilly,” Byrne said.“I’m playing off a 38 handicap at the moment, but I want to get down to 25 by the end of the year. “My driving is my greatest strength, but I need to work on my putting.”

The Ballarat and Clarendon College student has clearly inherited the golfing genes, with her mother, father and two grandparents all members of the Ballarat Golf Club. Last year Byrne became one of the top three qualifiers in the regional Victorian Primary School Championships and played in the state finals at Kooringal Golf Club, where she finished 15th.

Coach Kacey Heywood has been working with Byrne for only a month but sees plenty of talent to work with. “Sophie’s got a great swing and a lot of potential,” Heywood said. “She’s really enjoying it at the moment and if she keeps going the way she is I think she’ll be down to low 20s by the end of the year.”

Emma Werner from the Ballarat Courier

“THERE was something about the hammer throw that captured Emma Werner’s fascination. Originally a distance runner by trade, Werner would usually arrive early to athletics events with her mum, a meet official. It was watching a man warming up his throw that sparked Werner’s interest in the sport and got her thinking this could be a discipline she wanted to try. Three years later, the Eureka athlete will represent Australia a second time in the hammer throw at the Oceania Championships, this time in Tahiti.

Werner, who hails from Dimboola and is a former Ballarat Clarendon College boarder, said it was a great feeling to be pulling on the green and gold once more. “The first time was incredible – I was beside myself,” Werner said. “There is no real knowing where this might take me.”

Werner said she had not thought as far ahead as competing at an Olympics – it was all about building towards smaller steps, like a world championships or world university games. At the moment, Werner throws just shy of 40 metres and says there is plenty of fine-tuning to do in taking her throw further.

“The general gist of the sport is pretty easy, I’ve been doing it a while, but there are key elements to work on improving,” Werner said.

Initially coached by middle distance coach Rod Griffin in Ballarat, Werner is now tutored by Evan Peacock in Hobart. While she competes across Victoria, Werner also travels to Tasmania for the state’s winter competition in which she can also meet up with her coach. Werner will travel in a 43-strong team to Tahiti to compete among 22 IAAF member federations in the Pacific region from June 3-5.

Brett Goodes past student was drafted by the Western Bulldogs as a Rookie and played his first game recently for the club at the ripe old age of 29 years. Ned Mabon has made selection for the NSW AFL squad to play in the National Under 18 Championships during June and July. Stefan Nigro has been playing with some distinction in the Senior Mens’ team for the Ballarat Red Devils this year. parents and friends The Year 11 Presentation Ball held on the 11th May was such a wonderful evening for the Year 11 students with 139 students presented in their house groups to 400 family and friends. The students all looked wonderful with the girls choosing to wear both cocktail and long length dresses. The boys all wore a suit with matching tie. The students put a lot of thought into their outfits. As a Year 11 parent, of Kate, we were all very proud of the students on how they enjoyed their night. Each year a Year 11 student’s art piece is selected to feature on both the invitation and program. This year the wonderful artwork of Claire Mercer was chosen. The Year 11 Presentation Ball is an important milestone in a student’s journey as they draw closer to their final year of schooling. A lot of planning goes into this event. Each year the Parents and Friends Association form a small committee of Year 10 parent volunteers who plan every detail. I wish to acknowledge the work of this year’s Year 11 Presentation Ball Committee: Lyn Hadfield, Debra Douglas, Michelle Krieg and Fiona Emery. notices Places at Ballarat Clarendon College 2014 In the next six weeks the enrolment office will be allocating places in all year levels for 2014. As you would be aware in recent years waiting lists have developed at some levels. Therefore if you have family or friends intending to have new children commence in 2014 would you encourage them to go online at www.clarendon.vic.edu.au under Admissions and then enrolment to download a registration form. Unfortunately places cannot be guaranteed to current families unless registration is completed in the next few weeks. school photos We apologise for the delay in delivering this year’s school photos. As we are producing new superior products there has been many changes made since photo day. Putting these changes in place has unfortunately slowed the process. We are working frantically with the school and the Lab and hope to have photos delivered in the next few weeks.
