FAFSA Super Saturday, October 8th • Division of Instruction is partnering with Cash for College to raise
FAFSA completion rates for the Class of 2017
• FAFSA window opens earlier on October 1st and must be completed by March 2nd
• Workshops happening at 14 sites including 5 LAUSD high schools to help support financial aid completion
• Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School • John Marshall High School • Los Angeles Senior High School • Orthopaedic Medical Magnet High School • Roybal Learning Center
• Last year students received $35 million in financial aid!

1st Grade
Students identify college and career readiness traits
• Reading a book like “I Know I Can” by Wendy Rouillard
• “All About Me” cutout as a graduate labeling their college going behaviors and traits
Pre K - Kindergarten
Students explore different occupations
• Volunteers share and describe their jobs using visuals
• Reading a book like “Career Day” by Anne Rockwell
• Students select a career and create a tree map describing job features
2nd Grade
Students become familiar with colleges and universities in their community
• Create a college pennant and write an explanation on why it is important to go to college
• Create a bookmark advertising their assigned college

Students explore jobs and careers
• Research education and experience requirements for specific jobs
• Students create a road map of the steps they will take to their chosen career
3rd Grade
Students apply college and career readiness traits to goal setting
• Students create a Frayer Model graphic organizer that explain the importance and meaning of each trait
• Reading a book like “Aim for the Stars” by Burke and Farmer
• Students reflect on their strengths and challenges and set goals for improvement
5th Grade
Students conduct a college fair
• Research a college and create a visual presentation of information about their college
• Students prepare and give an oral presentation on their college
• Students tour a college campus

7th Grade
Students become familiar with the different types of colleges and the admissions process • Create a Venn diagram
comparing and contrasting the different types of colleges
• Students complete the college common application and teacher evaluation about their academic and personal characteristics
• Students participate in a field trip to a local college campus
6th Grade
Students connect interests and strengths with careers
• Students participate in self-assessments, use the results to explore jobs and careers and identify the degrees associated with that career
• Create a resume that includes college and degree they plan to attain, skills and experience
8th Grade
Students create a plan for graduating high school and college
• Calculate their GPA
• Map out the courses and credits needed including A-G
• Identify behaviors and dispositions to be college ready
• Identify their learning styles to support their success
• Alumni share success and challenges

9th Grade

• Students identify a career and create a resume that includes college and degree they plan to attain, skills and experience
• Students conduct an interview of a person within their identified field
• Students participate in a local college tour and events
11th Grade Students continue to prepare for college applications and learn how to finance college
• Introduced to funding sources such as the FAFSA, Dream Act, scholarships and grants
• Identify scholarships and write application essay for one
• Identify the costs associated with attending college

12th Grade – Final Steps
Students identify the post-secondary program that matches their qualifications, career interests and future goals
• Complete college applications
• Counselors publicize application deadlines, important dates and assist with application fee waivers
• Students complete their college essays
• Prepare a personal overview of grades, GPA, activities, accomplishments and personal attributes for letters of recommendation for admission and scholarship applications
• Complete the FAFSA and/or Dream Act applications
• Verify and request transcripts be sent
• Watch for college acceptance and financial award letters
