Collector for ArcGIS: iOS Data Collection Instructions 

 

Before we start, let’s make sure our device has the correct settings needed to use Collector for ArcGIS 

1. Go to Settings   

 

 

 

2. Select Cellular 

 

3. Check that Cellular Data is enabled (WiFi will work if we 

are within range, but if we are not within WiFi range, 

Cellular Data is needed) 

 

4. Back out to Settings 

 

5. Scroll down to Privacy 

 

6. Select Location Services 

a. Make sure Location Services is on and enabled for the Collector for ArcGIS application  

 

 

 

Now let’s get started using Collector for ArcGIS  

 

1. Tap on the collector icon to open the Collector for ArcGIS application 

 

2. Select ArcGIS Online 

 

   

3. Sign in using your username and password provided 

 

4. Your screen should look similar to below 

 

   

5. Tap on “Boise Adventure Learning”. The map opens to the Boise area. 

 

6. Below is a guide to the tools on the top of the application 

  

7. Tap the “Change basemap” icon. Select Imagery with labels. You should see aerial imagery on your map.  

 

8. Tap the “Zoom to my location” icon. Your map will zoom into your location. It may take a minute or two for the 

GPS to fix a position. A Blue dot, with a blue circle shows your location. 

 

  

9. To collect a point, tap the + icon. A side menu pops out. Tap on one of the observation types.  

 

Natural Features 

o Example: tree, river  

Human‐created Features 

o Example: bridge, path 

 Human‐Natural Features  

o Definition: a natural feature 

modified by humans  

o Example: bank stabilization 

Other 

o Definition:  not certain what 

category  

 

            

a. Collector will try and create a point at your GPS location. 

 b. If you get an error “Poor Locational Accuracy” see endnotei. 

 

c. Once the location is locked, a 

point will be generated on the 

map. “Under Location” will now 

show a Latitude and Longitude 

coordinate.   

 

10. Next, tap on the “My Notes” area. A 

dialog box opens. You can type up to 50 

characters of text. When finished typing, 

tap “Done”  

11. Next tap “Date/Time”. A calendar opens that you can select the date. Tap “Done”. 

 

12. Lastly, tap “Ecosystem Value”. Select the value you desire. Tap “Done” 

Very Low = score of 1 Low = score of 2 Medium = score of 3 High = score of 4 Very High = score of 5  

 

  

13. Optional photo. If you would like to attach a photo to your record, tap the camera icon. A Dialog opens allowing you to take a photo or video. Tap on the “Add” icon. Choose to take a new photo, or select one from your library. Select take photo or video. The application takes you to your camera. Take your photo. Tap the “use photo” on the lower right side of your screen. The new photo now shows in your attachments screen. To finish, tap “Done”  

     14. Your record is now ready. Tap the submit icon

i Poor Location Accuracy – if the GPS cannot get within 20 meters of your location, it will bring up this error. If this 

happens, tap “Cancel”. Go back to the map and click again. You can create a point just by clicking on the map. The 

first time it tries to use GPS, but you can click back on the map again and manually create or move your point.
