Men’s Tailoring TechniquesBecause Ralph began his career as a designer of men’s fine apparel, his women’s looks are heavily inf luenced by intricate techniques traditionally reserved for men’s tailoring:

AU T HENT IC SL E EV E V ENTS• A signature feature of Ralph Lauren Collection jackets.• Features functioning buttonholes—often one button is left

unbuttoned to demonstrate this.• Once the appropriate sleeve length has been determined, the

buttons are removed, the buttonholes are opened, and the buttons are re-sewn onto the sleeve.

• If the buttonholes are bound, they must be created from a piece of fabric that is shipped with the garment.

HIGH QUA LIT Y NAT U R A L FIBER I NTER LI NI NGS• Unlike most ready-to-wear jackets, Ralph Lauren Collection

jackets feature high quality natural fiber interlinings, which are used in hand-tailored men’s and women’s jackets to help maintain a jacket’s shape through wear and dry cleaning.

• The interlinings are made from horsehair and linen and are outstanding for creating and maintaining shape. Jackets made with natural fiber interlinings are less bulky at the edges and seams since the interfacing is almost entirely loose on the inside.

• Constructing the interlining involves a number of operations that require hand-stitching: setting the chest piece and shoulder pads and closing the armholes on the lining.

traditional men’s apparel.• Tailored shoulders with rolls are used on most Collection jackets.

This is a couture design technique in which a piece of lambs wool is inserted into the sleeve cap or shoulder of the jacket for a more rounded look rather than the square look created by a shoulder pad.

Couture Detailing

1 BOUND BUTTONHOLES:Buttonholes constructed as besom pockets and not thread buttonholes—considered a distinct, semi-couture detail that reflects meticulous tailoring expertise, more so than keyhole buttonholes.

2 LOCHROSENS:Swarovski crystals that have a hole in the center, so it can be sewn directly onto the fabric.

3 MACO BEADS:These beads are very expensive, made of real glass and considered the finest bugle beads available. Special needles are required to sew these beads, as standard sewing needles are too thick.

4 MIYUKI CUTDANA BEADS: An expensive metallic faceted bead from Japan. Mr. Lauren loves beadwork done with this material because of its high level of sparkle.

5 PICK-STITCHING:A finishing stitch often used on the finest men’s tailored garments.

6 SEQUINS:Disc-shaped beads used for embellishing many dresses this season. The sequins featured in this collection were treated for each specific garment to complement the mood of the specific look. There are sequins of various colors, shapes and sizes.

Fabrics, Materials& Patterns

7 ACETATE/VISCOSE HAMMERED SATIN: A beautiful blend of acetate and viscose treated with a special finish to achieve a slightly textured effect. The mix of fibers gives this fabric an exceptional shine, fluidity and drape. Viscose adds weight to the fabric; acetate adds to the ultra shine of the fabric. The blend was used for Hollywood dresses in the 1920s and ‘30s. 54% acetate, 46% viscose.

8 CASHMERE:Cashmere is an extremely soft and lightweight fiber combed from the undercoat of the longhaired Kashmir goat. Only a few ounces are obtained from each goat, which makes this yarn very scarce and costly. Our cashmere comes from the best mills in Italy that procure yarns from the most exclusive sellers in Mongolia and China. As with all knits: the higher the gauge, the finer the yarn. 100% cashmere.

9 CHARMEUSE[SHAR-MOOZ’]:

Silk fabric woven with a satin weave, where the warp threads cross over three or more of the backing (weft) threads. The front side has a satin finish—lustrous and reflective—whereas the back has a matte finish. 100% silk.

The longer the cotton fibers are, the finer they are—longer fibers produce a finer, more even yarn. This soft cotton shirting is very fine and smooth and has been finished to feel soft against the body. 100% cotton.

11 FEATHERWEIGHT MATTE JERSEY:This season’s jersey is made with a synthetic blend to achieve its lightness and exceptional fluidity and drape. The natural stretch, the matte face and the lightness of the fabric lend to a very flattering look on most women. 72% triacetate, 28% polyester.

12 FLUID MATTE SUITING:A seasonless fabric selected for its drape, femininity and beautiful tailoring. It’s an ideal springtime alternative to wool crepe. 73% viscose, 27% silk.

15 LIGHTWEIGHT ACETATE/VISCOSE SABLE[SAH-BLAY ]:

A fabric used often for couture. The blend of acetate and viscose gives the fabric a beautiful fluidity and drape and can be used for all shapes from day to evening. It’s a dry clean-friendly fabric perfect for traveling due to its resistance to wrinkling. 57% acetate, 43% viscose.

16 MULTI-COLOR GIRO INGLESE [GEE-RO EN-GLAY-SAY ]:

Unique new fabric for Collection inspired by a vintage garment. Silk yarns are woven as a featherweight gauze in a special technique to achieve an open construction and light and airy feel. To achieve the fabric’s color, the fabric ground is dyed and then the surface is printed with additional colors for a soft ombré effect. 100% silk.

17 PANNE VELVET [PAN]:This velvet is a blend of silk and viscose woven in France with a very short and compact pile. Its light weight and fluidity are characteristics taken from vintage velvets that were woven on old looms and have very narrow widths. The pile is smoothed in one direction creating a brighter color and a more sleek and liquid appearance. 82% viscose, 18% silk.

18 PRINTED LAMÉ [LEH-MAY’]:

Lamé fabric printed with a floral motif—a technique specially developed for Ralph Lauren. The print is very soft and blends in with the metal on the surface in a beautiful way. The fabric is treated with a protective jewelry finish to prevent the lamé from oxidizing. Due to its delicacy, innovative printing technique and fabric content, this is the most expensive fabric Ralph Lauren has ever used. 52% metal, 23% polyester, 25% mulberry silk.

19 SILK CHIFFON:Made with tightly twisted silk crepe fibers, chiffon is a lightweight, extremely sheer, almost transparent fabric that has a slightly bumpy texture. 100% silk.

WASHED CRINKLE CHIFFON: Silk chiffon that’s washed for a soft hand and organic crinkled effect. 100% silk.

21 TULLE [TOOL]:

Fabric woven like a net that is usually made of silk or nylon. Naturally stiff, but can also be made softer with different finishes. Comes in different thicknesses and with more or less open holes in the weave. Often used as a base for embroidery since it is strong and light and has a sheer effect on the skin.

what is a trunk show?• A trunk show is a special one-day event at which an upcoming

collection is presented directly to clients at a retail location or unique venue. It allows clients to preview or reserve the collection before it is made available to the public.

• A trunk show can be focused simply on personal, private appointments with select clients, or planned as a larger cocktail party with hors d’oeuvres, live music and informal modeling.

why should i have a trunk show?• It creates excitement and buzz around an upcoming collection.

• Clients can see details, proportion and fabrication of clothes that may not be evident in a photograph.

• It’s a good opportunity for clients to ensure that the size they need will be available.

who should i invite?• Pull client purchase and preference lists (if available) and decide

which clients to invite to the show. It is important to target your top clients.

• Think outside the box—if there is a Collection item you believe would be perfect for a client who typically buys only Black or Blue Label, call and encourage them to attend the trunk show.

• A trunk show is a great opportunity to expand your client list. Reach out to prominent people in your community who have never been to the store and introduce them to the collection.

• Mail invitations at least three weeks prior to the show date to ensure a good response rate. Include a handwritten note with each invitation to personalize the event for your client.

• After invitations have been mailed, be sure to schedule appointments with your clients. Confirm these appointments a few days before the actual show.

• If showing samples on a model, be sure to have her approved by the appropriate Ralph Lauren contact (such as a buyer, account executive, manager or marketing representative).

what happens during the show?• Each channel approaches a trunk show slightly differently.

• For information on how to manage your clients’ requests, please reach out the appropriate Ralph Lauren contact (such as a buyer, account executive, manager or marketing representative) for specific details.

what happens after the show? • Review orders with your client the next morning. It gives you

and your client an opportunity to make sure nothing was missed and no mistakes were made.

• Submit your requests to the appropriate Ralph Lauren contact to confirm availability.

• Since there is a limited amount of Collection merchandise available, be sure to explain to your clients that their requests will not necessarily guarantee them merchandise. If a client is reserving several pieces, ask them if they prefer to wait until the majority of their order arrives before coming into the store or if they prefer to try on individual pieces sooner.

• Urge clients to come in and try on their items as soon as possible.

how do i know if the show is successful?• The sell-through results are the true indicator of success, with

emphasis on how many reserved items are actually purchased.

• Good to know: It is better to have a smaller event with a better “stick rate,” than a bigger event with many rejected reserves.
