Connection to the Internet is critically important for a modern society. It boosts economic, social and political activity. Improving Internet availability in Ukraine, providing Ukrainians with Internet-connected devices, teaching them computer literacy would have significant and positive impact. At current moment multiple groups of Ukrainians simply cannot afford to get connected without external assistance. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) Very few of persons displaced from Crimea and Donbas were affluent enough in the past to own laptops or tablets. Majority did not have computers at all or used inexpensive desktops. They arrive to new places by suburban trains, or are evacuated by volunteers from the dangerous areas. To get to safety they often have to go long distances by foot. IDPs had to leave most of their belongings behind. After moving into new locations and unfamiliar environment, IDPs

constantly need information about available resources, potential jobs, places to rent, new government regulations, their relatives and friends, etc. Computer and Internet could provide it all, but these people struggle to put food on their tables and cannot afford even the simplest connected device.

IDPs get registered at volunteer organization Station Kharkov, May 13, 2015.

Help is provided by UN, EU, multiple volunteer groups including Nova Ukraine, California. Source: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=894756130591385

Classes for adult education. The displaced persons need some classes to adapt to their new reality. Quite often such classes are provided by volunteers on ad hoc basis. We at Nova Ukraine already work with volunteer groups which started to teach IDPs how to write and submit resume, how to start a small business, how to use computer, etc. For this purpose volunteers organize classrooms at the charity centers they organized earlier in 2014. These classrooms had no equipment at all, they get their equipment through local donations only and it is outrageously old.

Computers collected by the volunteering group “Station Kharkiv” to create the first computer class for IDPs.

Besides, as Ukrainian economy shifts towards post-industrial and informational one, many people with traditional professions need continuous education classes, geared towards IT industry.

What Nova Ukraine works on

Nova Ukraine (novaukraine.org) collects donations of network and computer equipment from individuals and businesses. All donations are tax-deductible. We made arrangements with local e-waste recycling company. It guarantees that transfer of electronics, handling of remaining data, and disposal of non-working items – everything is done according to strictest standards. We are in process of setting online lectures from Silicon Valley experts to benefit Ukrainian IT.
