Side 1 Collecting Consumers The Art of the Collectable in Modern America. What exactly is a collectable, and what purpose does it serve – to whom? Collections can consist of generally anything, and are a dominant feature in American culture. People collect Movies, Music, Books, Toys, Art, Clothing, Knick‐Knacks, Quotations, Images, and Everyday Objects. However, even if an item belongs to a collection, it is not a collectable unless it was initially designed to be collected. “A collectable is typically a manufactured item designed for people to collect. In this respect, they are distinguishable from other subjects of collections, which may also include natural objects (e.g., butterflies) and objects manufactured for purposes other than collecting (e.g., stamps).” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collectible For your sketchbook: Answer the following questions using your own opinions. You may use paragraph or bulleted format. (1 page minimum) 1) What is the difference between a group of objects and a collection? For example, what is the difference between a jar of change and a coin collection? 2) Why do certain objects lend themselves to be in collections more than others? What features do easily collectable objects usually have? 3) List collections that you have, or would be interested in having. 4) What is the purpose of having a collection? 5) How does corporate America exploit collections? List as many collectables as you can think of. Consider games that require collecting, collectables that come with other purchases (e.g., cereal boxes), and collectable accessories made for collectables.
