Besuretousea1/4”seamallowanceforallthepatchwork.Theoddrowsarearowof8fullbricks;sew5ofthose.Theevenrowsarearowof7fullbrickswithahalfbrickoneachend;create5ofthose.

Sewalltherowstogether,alternatingthemtorecreatetheillustrationhere.Yourfinishedpatchworkshouldmeasureabout40”x30”.Skiptostep10fortherestofthebox.

Forthediamondlayout,it’snotquiteasstraightforward.We’restilldoingrowsandcolumns,butsincetheseamsareatanangletheyneedtobelinedupdifferently.Thisiswhatitlookslikewhenyousewupapair,keepthatinmindforthenextstepwhenyouseethefulllayoutwe’regoingfor.Anddon’tforgettousea1/4”seamallowanceforthepatchwork.

Thisisthediamondlayoutyouwanttocreatewithyour76diamonds.They’reallpiecedataslantlikethis,butonceyougetthehangofityou’llseeit’sjustlikesquares,onlytilted.Thethingtowatchoutforisthatthereareadifferentnumberofdiamondstopieceineachrow.Itgoes:2diamonds(2rows),4diamonds(2rows),6diamonds(2rows),8diamonds(2rows),and9diamonds(4rows).Yourfinishedpatchworkshouldbeabout43”x36”,buthavinga1/2”ortwooffwon’taffectyourproject.

Nowwe’rereadytoactuallystartmakingthebox!Atthispointwe’llbeusinga5/8”seamallowanceunlessstatedother-

wise.Theboxhas3majorcomponents,thebottom,thesides,andthefront/back.

Eachoneissewntothelining,butinaslightlydifferentway.

Forthebottom,layerapatchworkandliningpiecetogetherwithrightsidesfacing.SewthemtogetherwithlittleLshapesateachcornerastheillustrationshows.Whencomplete,trimtheseamallowancesinthatcorner,turnthebottomrightsideout,andpress.

Thepaperpatternalsoshowsthis,butyou’llknowyouhaveitrightwhenyourpressedshapelookslikeaveryfat+sign.

Forthesides,youusethesamepiecesasthebottom,butsewnabit

differently.Forthisone,layertogetheronepatchworkand

oneliningsquareasbefore,butsewthemtogetheralongthetopandsidesonly.Leavethebottomopenforturningrightsideoutwhenyou’redone.Trimthecornersoftheseamallowances,turnthepiecerightsideout,andpressflat.Dothiswiththeremainingpiecessoyouhavetwosidestotal.

Thefrontandbackusetheextendedpiecesandarealsosewntogetherabitdifferently.Justlikewiththeothers,layerapatchworkpiecewithaliningpiecewithrightsidesfacingandlineuptherawedges.Sewaroundthesidesandtopofthispiece,butbesuretoturnatarightanglebeforeheadingoutthebottom.Trimtheseamallowances,turnthepiecerightsideout,andpressitflat.Thepaperpatternalsoshowsthis,butyoushouldhavealittleextensionatthebottomifyou’vedoneitright.

Togivethestructuretoyourbox,you’llbefillingeachpiecewithan11”x11”squareofPeltex.Thepatternisthesameasthesquareforthesidesandbottomexceptwiththeseamallowancescutoff(incaseyoumissedthenoteonthepattern).

Slideeachsquareofinterfacinginsideeachsideofyourbox.Theadhesivefortheinterfacingshouldbefacingthewrongsideofyourpatchwork.Thesquareshouldnestlesnuglyagainsttheseamsfromsteps15-17,leavingtheextensionsfree.Thepaperpatternalsoshowsaguidelineastowheretheyshouldgoifyougetconfused.

Whentheinterfacingisallsettled,fuseitinplace.

Oncetheinterfacingisallfused,Iwantedtomakesureitstayedinplaceso

Ididalittletopstitchingaroundtheinterfacingsquare,

about1/4”infromtheedgeforeachsideofthebox.Atthistime,alsoaddyourvinylpocketifdesired.Tapeitinplacewherethepatternguidelinesindicateonwhatwillbethefrontofyourbox,thensewitplacearoundthesidesandbottom(about1/8”fromtheedge)toformthepocket.

Nowwecanstartjoiningthesides.Eachsideoftheboxisattachedtothe

bottomviaaFrenchseamsoitfitsunderthesewing

machinerelativelywellwithoutbendingtheinterfacingtoomuch.Firstupwe’llbeaddingthesides.TobegintheFrenchseam,lineuponesidepiecewiththebottompiecewithWrongsidesfacingandsewthemtogetherwitha1/4”seamallowancealongjustoneoftheextensions.Whencomplete,trimdowntheseamto1/8”anddefinitelybesuretogetalltheextrathreadsoutofthere.

TofinishtheFrenchseam,turnthepiecesbacktheotherwaywithrightsidestogether.Presstheseamflat,thensewthesameseamasbefore,butwitha3/8”seamallowance.Thisshouldencasetheseamfromthepreviousstep,creatinganicefinishedseamwithnorawedgesoneitherside.

Repeatthiswiththeremainingsidepieceandtheoppositesideoftheboxbottom.Youshouldhavearowof3squaresasshownintheillustration.

Nowrepeatsteps19-21withthefrontandbacksidesoftheboxandtheremaining

LastlyIaddedtheVelcrotoholdallthesidesoftheboxup.Isavedthisforlast
