Collaborative Subtitling Design Challenge Submission

I'm Joanna Pierożek from Polandand this is my redesign of the collaborative
subtitling tool.
Current collaborative subtitling tool
Current collaborative subtitling tool
The good:
- overall simplicity
- emphasis on help for first-time users
- simple keyboard controls
- color indication of the subtitle getting too long as the user types it
- novel approach to syncing
Current collaborative subtitling tool
The bad:
a) General issues:
- steps indication and Log in link at the bottom of the window
- no indication what step the user is on
- no Back button
- disappearing mouse controls of the video
- false affordances to click (keyboard „buttons”)
Current collaborative subtitling tool
The bad:
b) Transcribing:
- Enter pressed in the middle of the phrase doesn't break it in two
- the users aren't encouraged to describe important sounds in the video and there's no set notation for such descriptions – resulting subtitles may be less useful for the deaf
Current collaborative subtitling tool
The bad:
b) Syncing:
- the tool doesn't seem efficient for long videos
- subtitles only get one timing – when they should appear – how to make a pause between two subtitles?
- no possibility to edit text or timing of the subtitles in this step
- no Undo and difficult to discover Start over
Current collaborative subtitling tool
The bad:
c) Review:
- syncing is done differently in this step than in Sync
The goal of the redesign
Retain the good, attempt to do something about the bad.
Redesigned subtitling tool
The tool slides out under the video after clicking Add subtitles now
Redesigned subtitling tool
Right after sliding out the tool displays help for the first step – transcribing
The step indicator and Log In link were moved to the top of the window
Redesigned subtitling tool
The video controls are duplicated inside the tool so they're always the same and don't disappear during playback
Users are advised to describe sounds in [ ]
Redesigned subtitling tool
After starting the playback from inside the tool help is pulled up into a bar with links to Help and a Video Tutorial
Redesigned subtitling tool After completing the first
step the user continues to the second step – syncing
The user syncs one minute of the video at a time, he can start over his work on one part
Undo erases the timing of the last subtitle synced and skips back to the end of the previous subtitle
Redesigned subtitling tool To sync, the user holds
down Spacebar for as long as the subtitle should appear
When there's a pause between two subtitles it's marked in the synced transcript
Spacebar button lights up when Space is down
Subtitles are editable
Redesigned subtitling tool
After syncing the video the user is encouraged to review his work
The Review step works exactly like the Sync step – there are no new mechanisms for users to learn
