CPIN ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 1
Message from the Director The Collaborative Program in Neuroscience (CPIN) is the largest collaborative graduate program in the University of Toronto. It adds the neuroscience specialization as a notation to participating masters and doctoral students. The CPIN recognizes graduate courses in neuroscience, identifies/organizes distinguished neuroscience lectures, and hosts an annual poster presentation event. The CPIN also provides volunteer opportunities through organizing high school outreach activities to enhance the leadership training of its graduate students. For the 2012 – 2013 year, the CPIN was funded by 14 academic departments from Faculty of Arts and Science, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, and Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto, as per the Memorandum of Agreement. The lead faculty of the program is the Faculty of Medicine. The CPIN program is reviewed by the School of Graduate Studies and the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies, and the CPIN reports to the Vice Dean Graduate Affairs in the Faculty of Medicine, the lead faculty. The administration of the CPIN is managed under the Department of Physiology. This report summarizes the major activities and events in 2012-2013 under new leadership. We have restructured the organizations of the CPIN and initiated new activities. We encouraged and assisted in the establishment of the Graduate Student Executive Committee to increase the visibility and involvement of the CPIN graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. We also sought additional sponsorship to support CPIN activities. We have conducted student surveys on the academic program. We continue to welcome new ideas and new sponsorship. We are determined to make changes in our best capacity to improve the CPIN programs. We aim to foster a strong and proactive collaborative neuroscience training program, recognize and promote excellence, increase the versatility of the trainees for their career development, enhance the national and international recognition of our neuroscience program, and ultimately attract the best graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to our program. With your support and help, we can achieve these goals. I look forward in the coming year to serving and working with you, the CPIN faculty members, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, to ensure that the CPIN continues to be recognized nationally and internationally as the strong collaborative neuroscience training program it is. Zhong-Ping Feng, M.D., Ph.D. Director, Collaborative Program In Neuroscience
CPIN ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 2
About CPIN The Collaborative Program in Neuroscience (CPIN) is a graduate program offering masters and doctoral degree specialization through the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto (Note: this is not a degree in neuroscience but rather a specialization. Students who fulfill all CPIN requirements receive a notation on their transcript and an official document of program completion). CPIN is the largest collaborative neuroscience graduate program in Canada. There are over 300 faculty members and over 200 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, from fourteen academic departments across five faculties at the University of Toronto participating in the program. The CPIN faculty members and trainees are located at the University of Toronto and its affiliated teaching hospitals/research institutes. Such a large and versatile community provides a strong basis to cultivate a successful training program supporting excellence, collaboration, innovation, and translational and trans-disciplinary research activities. CPIN is funded by fifteen Academic Departments across five Faculties at the University of Toronto. The lead faculty of the program is the Faculty of Medicine. CPIN reports to the Vice Dean Graduate Affairs in the Faculty of Medicine, and is reviewed by the School of Graduate Studies and the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies. The administration of CPIN is managed under the Department of Physiology. The purposes of the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience are to:
1. Foster a proactive collaborative neuroscience graduate/trainee program at the University of Toronto
2. Recognize and promote excellence, and enhance visibility of the graduate
students and postdoctoral fellows in the neuroscience program at the University of Toronto
3. Create an environment increasing the versatility of the graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows for their career development
4. Enhance the national and international recognition of the University of Toronto neuroscience educational program
5. Attract excellent graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to the University of
Toronto

Take Your Undergrad to Lab Day In order to provide opportunities for motivated undergraduates to experience a research setting in graduate school, the CPIN Graduate Executives initiated and created the “Take Your Undergrad to Lab Day” event in April 2013, in collaboration with the Neuroscience Association for Undergraduate Students (NAUS). Coordinated by Sonia Sugumar, CPIN graduate students volunteers mentored the event, in which undergraduates observed the graduate students’ hands-on experiments for a portion of the day, upon being granted the permission of their thesis supervisors. CPIN’s enthusiastic graduate students well accommodated the overwhelming demand from the undergraduates for the event. Undergrad students rated their overall experience as a 9/10 and indicated that they would recommend this event to their peers. The NAUS executive representatives, Amirah Momen and Kweephol Petchsri, collaborated with CPIN in recruiting undergraduate students and helped in organizing this event. CPIN Student Discussion Group CPIN Graduate Executives have created and introduced a new format of learning into an academic environment steeped in the tradition of large lecture halls. Coordinated by Luka Srejic, Neurotalks offered an informal round-table setting for active neuroscience discussions. Both students and faculty members from a variety of disciplines were invited to participate. Five Neurotalk sessions were hosted in 2012-2013. The topics covered in the Neurotalks include: connectomics, neuroenhancement, brain modeling, and neuroscience in the media. Among the participants were students and post-docs in psychology, physiology, medical science, engineering, and cognitive science, in addition to faculty members from rehabilitation science, psychiatry, and aerospace engineering. http://www.neuroscience.utoronto.ca/events/Neurotalk.htm
CPIN Cortex Club In May 2013, CPIN announced a merger of the University of Toronto Cortex Club to CPIN. Cortex Club is a unique seminar series dealing with cutting-edge topics and significant, challenging issues in neuroscience. It is organized and run by graduate students, and provides an informal and egalitarian environment designed to encourage cross talk and innovation. At each Cortex Club event, a visiting researcher is asked to present a mixture of novel, technical, speculative, and possibly even controversial work or ideas. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions, make comments, and discuss with each other during the invited speaker's presentation. The direction of the discussion is allowed to evolve organically, whether that be down towards the nitty-gritty technical details of a new methodology, or up towards lofty ideas about the nature of the brain and the future of neuroscience. The Cortex Club was originally founded at the University of Oxford in 2009. With the support of the CIHR Sleep and Biological Rhythms Program, the Toronto chapter of the Cortex Club was started in 2012 by Dr. Blake Richards (President of the Club in Oxford from 2010-2011) and Dr. Jimmy Fraigne. Several Cortex Club events in Toronto have been attended to capacity, on subjects including optogenetics, pharmacogenetics, early visual development, and large-scale computer models of the brain. Katie Ferguson hosted the CPIN-Cortex Club on May 10, 2013, in which the CPIN distinguished Lecture speaker, Dr. Ivan Soltesz, Chancellor's Professor and Chair of Departments of Anatomy and Neurobiology, University of California (Irvine) led the discussion. The Cortex Club provides graduate students a chance to interact with the world's leading neuroscientists in a manner that standard seminars or luncheons do not. It also provides invaluable leadership and networking experience for graduate students, helping them to build connections within the global neuroscience community. These principles fit the mandates of CPIN. In the 2013-2014 year, as a part of CPIN, Cortex Club will continue organizing events with leaders in neuroscience as part of our CPIN graduate activities. More information about the University of Toronto Cortex Club can be found at the website cortexclub.ca. http://www.neuroscience.utoronto.ca/events/cortexclub.htm
