What is Collaborative Learning?Collaborative learning is an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves groups of students working together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product. In collaborative classrooms, the lecturing/listening/note-taking process may not disappear entirely, but it lives alongside other processes that are based in students’ discussion and active work with the course material. Regardless of the specific approach taken or how much of the lecture-based course is replaced, the goal is the same: to shift learning from a teacher-centered to a student-centered model.

How do I convert my classroom?Update your entire classroom or one zone at a time over the course of a few years. Each zone highlights specific areas of learning and teaching and helps to rethink key factors: physical space, resources, changing roles of student and teacher, and how to accommodate all learning styles.

LEARN

Maintain student concentration and focus by engaging students in the learning process. Engage in conversation, introduce technology, allow them to take control of their own learning by offering asynchronous student-centered modules

REFLECT

An informal space where students can kick back, relax and move at their own pace. By providing a dedicated zone to foster self-directed learning, the teacher validates the learners’ self-reflection and meta-cognition skills which ultimately encourages lifelong learning

COLLABORATE

Space where a large team can work together and discuss projects or join forces with the instructor. Hangout with your classmates or team up with another class in a different state (or country!)

SHARE

21st century learners will need a different set of tools and skills to present, deliver, and receive feedback on their work. Encourage engagement by providing a zone with tools such as interactive whiteboards, makerspaces, brainstorming boards, personal learning devices and flexible furniture
