MARCH/APRIL 2017 C O N D U I T T H E On February 28, 2017, I, along with Business Representative Jack Majkut, visited the Nassau Coliseum to see the work being done by Local 25 Brothers and Sisters and to see the progress being made. The Coliseum looks great and the quality of craftsmanship by our Brothers and Sisters was exactly what I expected. I would like to personally thank the Local 25 Foremen, Brian Kelly from B&G Electric and Jim Smith from Di- fazio Electric, KND Electric; Local 25 Shop Stew- ard Josh Margolis and all the Brothers and Sis- ters for a job well done. It has been 18 months since the Coliseum closed for renovations. On April 5, 2017, it will reopen with fellow Long Is- lander/musician Billy Joel as the first concert at the newly renovated Coliseum. With all the con- certs and hopefully the Islanders coming back to Long Island, Local 25 and the new manage- ment team will continue to work together at the Nassau Coliseum, as we have done so since 1972. This job at Nassau Coliseum has created thou- sands of man hours each year for Local 25. Once again, I would like to say great job to everybody who worked on the new Nassau Coliseum. Brothers and Sisters,

Spring has fi nally arrived after a fairly mild winter. I can’t believe it’s been seven months since I have taken over as your Busi-ness Manager of this great local union. Time does certainly fl y by. I have been very busy since my last Conduit article. First, I would like begin by saying some of the changes that have tak-en place in the past few months such as the 5 o’clock Union Meeting start time and the mass texting seem to be working very well. Attendance has increased at the last few Union Meetings and hopefully this will continue in the future. Here are some things that have taken place since my last Conduit article. On February 16, 2017, I attended my fi rst NY State IBEW Business Managers Meeting in Binghamton, NY. The meeting was attended by all the

NY State IBEW Construction Business Managers. Also in attendance were International Reps. Larry Davis and Ellen Redmond and our IBEW Lobbyist Paul Dinofrio. The meeting was an all-day affair. Topics discussed were projects around the state, Wicks Law, Prevailing Rate and negative effects to NY Unions of a proposed National Right to Work Law by President Trump. In January, I sent out a letter to all the Sisters of this local union to have a meeting with the Business Manager to discuss any issues out there in the industry that may need to be addressed. I believe this may have been a fi rst for Local 25. Seventeen Sisters and I had a three-hour meeting that was very produc-tive and long overdue. I look forward to our next meeting in the near future. Next, on February 4, 2017, I and the Business

Offi cers, along with some of our Offi cers attended the Local 3 Asian Club Dinner fundraiser in Flushing, Queens. It was a great event and I would like to thank Michael and Wendel Yee for the invitation. Another great event that we attended was the James Connolly Irish American Labor Coalition. This event was held at Local 3’s new JATC Training Facility in Long Island City. I would like to thank Marty Glennon and Local 3 Business Manager Chris Er-ikson for their hospitality. I was appointed to the Suffolk County Elec-trical Licensing Board in February 2017. This po-sition has been held by Local 25 Business Man-agers for many years. As I write this article, we have just fi nished negotiating the Maintenance Agreement. We are in the midst of negotiating the Nassau Coliseum Agreement. Towards the end of April 2017, we will start negotiating the Tele-

LOCAL UNION 25 CALENDAR

(continued from page 2)

As I write my article for this Conduit, I hope we have seen the last of the bad weather and jobs start to pick up. April starts our election season.

Please remember the following dates:

• April 11, 2017 – Nominations for 1 Judge, and 7 Tellers – vote to follow • May 9, 2017 – Nominations for all Offi cers • June 13, 2017 – Election Day

June 13, 2017 is Election day; please make every effort to cast your vote.

On a closing note, I am very grateful to our membership for keeping our Union very strong by keeping up our fi ght against our foes. Remember, vol-unteering for one hour a month for our local is always welcomed. See you at the next General Meeting at 5:00pm. We are always actively seeking committee members for various committees. Please contact the President if you are interested in helping our great local.

OUR STRENGTH IS IN EACH OTHER

phone Agreement. A few weeks back, Business Rep Jack Majkut and I went to the NYC-Long Island Building Trades Conference in Hollywood, Florida. The conference was very informative with some of the guest speakers being Governor Andrew Cuomo, NYC Mayor Bill Deblazio, Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota, and National Building Trades President Sean McGar-vey, to name a few. In the coming weeks, some of the Business Offi ce Reps.

and I will be attending the IBEW Construction and Maintenance Conference and the National Building Trades Legislative Conference in Washington, DC. I will give a report on these conferences at the next union meeting and in the next Conduit. I would like to announce that this year Local 25 Contractors paid 68.8 million dollars into our funds for 2016. And at the end of the year, there are no delinquent contactors. All monies have been paid in full for 2016. Also, in my last article regarding the funds I mentioned the funds were going to increase between 4% and 5%. It looks like they will be closer to 6%, which is even better than we originally fore-casted. Before I close, I would like to announce the re-tirement of International Secretary Treasurer Sam Chilia and the appointment of former 4th District

Vice President Ken Cooper to take over as International Secretary Treasurer. We here at Local 25 would like to congratulate both Brothers in their new endeavors. Brothers and Sisters, that ends my report for this issue of the Conduit. Remember, work safe, turn off energized circuits, and always watch each oth-er’s back out there. BROTHERS AND SISTERS UNITE.

operating at over 50 volts AC or 60 volts DC. These energy storage systems may be stand-alone or inter-active with other electric power production sources. Energy storage is the collection of energy produced at one time for use at a later time. Energy storage involves converting energy from types that are chal-lenging to store to methods that are easier and/or more cost-effective to store.

Article 710, Stand-Alone Systems, contains require-ments for power production sources operating in stand-alone mode that are not connected to an elec-trical distribution system. This article applies to off-grid systems, sometimes referred to as remote area power supply, having a source of power such as photovoltaic, wind, hydro, fuel cell, fossil-fuel pow-ered engine generator or other electricity producing methods.

Article 712, DC Microgrids, covers direct-current power systems where DC sources such as photovol-taic, wind turbines, and fuel cells supply power di-rectly into a distribution system to supply DC utiliza-tion equipment such as LED lighting, variable speed motors, servers and computer equipment, commu-nications equipment and other types of DC systems. Direct utilization of DC leads to higher effi ciencies and perhaps smaller and lower-cost equipment than AC-coupled methods.

RENEW is a committee for the good of the worker, the good of the union, and the good of the

community. RENEW reaches out and engages both those organized and unorganized. We have strengthened our presence within many of Long Island’s school dis-tricts, teaching youngsters about the basics of electri-cal theory, electromagne-tism, and motors. Graciously greeted by students, your RENEW Committee interacts with and educates students whose studies have touched on the science behind our

industry. Never settling for a single school, we have grown into fairs and outreach events, presenting our work in good light, explaining paths after high school alternate to that of a traditional college or university. Conversations had during these events have brought about an understanding of our livelihood and a re-spect of our trade. Further engaging the community, your RENEW Committee has donated much time to Ride For Life, a local charity dedicated to raising funds and aware-ness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more com-monly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The many events during the year culminate to the Annual Honoree Recognition Benefi t. The event, hosted by Villa Lombardi’s, required volunteers to temporarily

install ten fl at screens along with associated video equipment and cabling infrastructure. A four-hour event took RENEW volunteers nearly twelve hours to set up which was tremendously appreciated by the

charity. Y o u r RENEW is a co m m it te e of change; a group of l ikeminded young union-ists with a common vi-

sion of the greater good. We work hard to accomplish what needs to be all while enjoying the time leading up to it. RENEW encourages you and your Brothers and Sisters to come down on the third Thursday of every month to join the conversation. We’ll see you there. Sincerely,

Respectfully Yours, Christopher E. Kelly Training Director

Everyone encounters diffi cult people and demanding circumstances at one point or another. From an angry customer to confl ict with a co-worker,

here are 5 tips you can use to diffuse a challenging situation:1 – Listen – When people are angry, they need time to vent before they are ready to listen. Show them you are listening by empathizing and asking

clarifying questions. 2 – Take a breath – If you feel yourself becoming tense or angry, take a moment to calm down before you respond so that your response is practical, not emotional. Sometimes it can be helpful to take a deep breath and count to 10. 3 – Watch your tone – Nonverbal communication makes up 93% of the way we communicate. Make sure your tone and body language matches your words. If others sense sarcasm or anger, you are more likely to escalate the situation rather than diffuse it.4 – Apologize when warranted. Sometimes people make mistakes. It is important to recognize when you do and own up to it.5 – ACT – Strategize a solution, put a plan in place, and follow up until the issue has been resolved. For more tips on confl ict resolution or to speak with a counselor about other work/life concerns, contact National EAP at 1-800-624-2593. Hello Brothers and Sisters! Spring is a time for new beginnings. At our February meeting, Darlene Brandoff resigned her position as President of the NY Region Chapter and David Pena resigned his position as Secretary/Treasurer. Vice-President Ricky Viera was appointed to complete Sister Brandoff’s term as President; Joshua Margolis was appointed to complete Brother Viera’s term as Vice-President; and Darlene Brandoff was ap-pointed to complete Brother Pena’s term as Secretary Treasurer. Lacey Cox will continue his term as Ser-geant-At-Arms. Robert Link and Michael Rosenthal were appointed to our Executive Committee. We wish everyone success with their new responsibilities and pledge our support. On March 18, 2017 we hosted our 2nd Annual Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament. In addition to the main event, there were raffl es and a 50/50. Partici-pants were provided with a free buffet at the break. Once again, thanks to the support of our Brothers and Sisters in Local 25, we had a very successful event. Looking forward, we have discussed hosting several fund raising events including a bus trip to At-

lantic City and a sunset party cruise out of Captree Marina. We will also once again be volunteering at the 5th Annual Kick Stands Up Motorcycle Poker Run and Car Show on Sunday, July 16, 2017. This is a free, family friendly event, hosted by the Association for Mental Health and Wellness benefi ts Suffolk County United Veterans (SCUV). SCUV provides housing, counseling and a host of other services to homeless veterans. Further information about the event can be found at www.ksu.scuv.org. WE EXTEND AN INVITATION TO EVERY BROTH-ER AND SISTER IN LOCAL 25 – ALL DIVISIONS AND ALL CLASSIFICATIONS – TO JOIN US FOR OUR MONTHLY MEETING ON THE LAST THURSDAY OF EVERY MONTH. Anyone in good standing as an IBEW member is encouraged to become a member of the EWMC. We are an inclusive organization. We do not discriminate based on race, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identifi cation, or political belief. YOUR FUTURE AND THE FUTURE OF THE IBEW IS IN YOUR HANDS. BE INFORMED. GET INVOLVED. MAKE A DIFFERENCE. WE ARE UNITED MORE BY OUR COMMON GOALS THAN WE ARE DIVIDED BY OUR DIFFERENCES.

REMEMBER – IN SOLIDARITY THERE IS STRENGTH

V.U.F. COMMITTEEDear Brothers and Sisters, I have been Chairman of the V.U.F. Committee for 11 years. Through this time, we have helped numerous families with your kind contributions and have been inspired by your spirit of solidarity. The selfl essness and kindness that you give, provides the greatest light dur-ing a members’ dark times. You have given hope and renewed faith when it is needed most. This is why I truly believe this committee to be “Brotherhood at its Best”. I thank you all for making this possible. There comes a time when the torch must be passed on to ensure that our traditions continue to grow. That time for me is now and I am stepping down as Chairman of the V.U.F. . After careful consideration, President Guadagno and I have asked Brother Chris Callahan to be the Chairman. Chris is an Offi cer with the Examining Board and has always risen to the occasion when our Local has called upon him. The Com-

mittee is in good shape and have no doubt that Chris will continue this while taking it in a new direction. This will be my last article and I would be remiss without thank-ing the Committee members who have helped through the years: Tom Smith, Bill Grant, James P. Malley, Garret Scholl and Secretary Margaret Rivers for all their time and dedication! A special thanks to all the re-tirees who have continually given to our Cause as a Union. And a fi nal thanks to my father and former President James Plant for entrusting me with such an honor.I am forever grateful. Thank You!

Sincerely,Sean T. Plant, Vice President
