Permanent Secretary for DSD Visits Colin

The Department for Social Development’s Permanent Secretary Alan

Shannon visited the Colin area in December 2007.

Annie Armstrong, Manager of CNP stressed the importance of DSD officials

witnessing the real issues the community face: During his visit Mr Shannon

visited two local projects supported by Belfast Regeneration Office; Scoil

na Fuiseoige and Colin Valley Football Club. He also heard about plans for

the development of a Town Centre. On behalf of the Partnership I would

like to thank DSD for their support up to now, however, it is important that

DSD, along with all other departments and agencies, commit to providing

long term the resources that Colin so desperately needs.

DSD has currently invested over £6.5 million in projects in Colin under

Neighbourhood Renewal. These projects include sport/play facilities,

environmental projects, economic development, community development

and salaries.

Welcoming the opportunity to see at first hand the impacts of the Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy Mr Shannon said:“It is very

clear that the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership is making a real difference to the lives of people in this area. Building on the

advances made here through the Neighbourhood Renewal Action Planning process must now be the focus for this community

and those statutory organisations charged with the delivery of services in the area”.

Success of Refresh 15

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 7th Edition of Colin News, as you read through the pages of this publication you will read about the achievements of many local people, namely Rita Hatton, Jane Adams, Johnny Flynn, Margaret McCullough and Eileen Wilson, I would like to extend a heart felt congratulations to them all, you all no doubt will be an inspiration to many people in the community.

Also in this edition you will see that there are many new projects to celebrate and I would like to highlight just a few, the new Colin Reach Out Project, the opening of the DePaul Trust’s new hostel to support those most in need, the success of the Colin Health for All sub group in getting through to the second stage of the Big Lottery “Live & Learn” programme, this could possibly result in £1Million investment in the Colin area, and I’m sure I can speak for the general community in wishing them the very best of luck with their second stage application.

As you can also see, we are doing everything possible to ensure that Government is well aware of the issues affecting the Colin Community therefore the need to welcome individuals like Conor

Murphy, Regional Development Minister and Alan Shannon Permanent Secretary to the Dept. for Social Development is absolutely vital not only to advance our Neighbourhood Renewal Action Plan but to let Government Officials and Ministers see at first hand the issues affecting the community.

I am pleased to report that we have appointed the international Architects, Horan, Keogan, Ryan to prepare a Master Plan for a new Town Centre; this exercise will be undertaken over the next 6 months. The Town Centre development has the potential to be the first step in achieving a heart in the Colin community that we all know is required and will also fulfil many of the objectives in our Action Plan. It will be extremely important that the Master Plan reflects the views of the community and there will be ample opportunity to allow for this to happen, we will keep you informed of the community consultations.

I would also like to take this opportunity to inform you that the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership Board’s AGM will take place on Tuesday 20th May we wish to make this a very public event and are holding it in the mall at the Dairy Farm Centre, I am therefore happy to invite you all to our AGM we will publish further information nearer the time.

Minister for Regional Development Visits Colin

Conor Murphy, Minister for Regional Development met with community representatives and local residents in the Colin area on Wednesday 19th March during a Sinn Fein hosted visit.

Mr Murphy met with residents of Upper Dunmurry Lane to discuss planning applications to build houses and apartments in an area where the sewage system cannot cope with the current demand. He also visited Sally Gardens Community Centre to see the new refurbishments and get a flavour of the work that goes on in the centre.

Finally the Minister visited the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership, the local Neighbourhood Renewal Office, to hear their plans for the future. Here he met with CNP staff along with representatives from Footprints Women’s Centre, Colin Counselling, former Sinn Fein Counsellor, Pat Rice and Eddie Keenan, life long Irish language enthusiast. The Minister praised the work that is going on in the Colin area and was particularly interested and pleased with the Master Plan for a vision of a town centre for Colin.

Colin ‘Reach Out’ Detached Youth Project

The Youth Strategy Subgroup of the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership has secured funding from the Community Foundation to deliver a new Detached Youth Project named Colin ‘Reach Out’.

The project in partnership with the S.E.E.L.B. will see three teams of youth workers working on the streets throughout the Colin area to meet with young people, assess their needs and deliver new and exciting youth work programmes. The youth workers will target young people who currently do not access youth provision in the Colin area and the project will be available evening and weekends and when young people are deemed most ‘at Risk’.

The SEELB have also supported the project with the use of a cavarette which will provide a meeting point for the youth workers where young people can come and speak to them, get a cup of tea and access resources/literature etc.

Colin ‘Reach Out’ is an 18 month pilot project with the aim to develop detached/outreach provision for young people in the Colin area. The project places a strong emphasis on a partnership approach to working with young people and they are currently working with other youth providers and organisations which have a responsibility to bring youth provision to the area.

Angie Quirke, Project Coordinator said,

“The project has so far been engaging with young people in Glasvey, Mount Eagles, White’s Rise and Colin Mill shops in Poleglass and from this we have organised a number of activities for the young people to engage in. We will continue to be out on the streets over the coming year and we would encourage all young people to come and talk to us if they see us or the cararette in their area.”

Anti-Cocaine InitiativeThe Colin Area Youth Forum in conjunction with the Colin Drug & Alcohol Forum implemented an initiative to address the misuse of Cocaine within the Colin Area. A designer was brought in to work with the young people on the best way to get the Anti-Cocaine message across to the community.

Paul Burke, Coordinator of the Colin Youth Forum said,

“The Youth Forum were approached by the Colin Drug and Alcohol Forum and asked to participate in the Anti-Cocaine Initiative. Since this was one of the main issues that the young people identified as a priority they were delighted to be involved. The Youth Forum were very committed to ensuring the completion of the project to the highest standard and were delighted with the finished design for the posters and banner.”

The poster will be displayed on the Colin Reach Out Caravette and also placed throughout the community. Initially the design of the poster was to portray a negative image of cocaine use e.g. dark colours, people snorting cocaine, however after further consultation it was decided that the poster should show a positive portrayal of young people within the Colin area.

Alison Armstrong, Community Support worker for ASCERT said,

Most of the young people within the Colin area are not using cocaine so we wanted the poster to be bright and reflect this, but still get the message across. The Young people have worked extremely hard from the planning stages during the photo shoot and preparing for the launch. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hard work on behalf of the Colin Drug & Alcohol Forum.”

LIVE AND LEARN FUNDING

The Colin Health for All subgroup of the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership has successfully received £30,500 from the Big Lottery.

This grant was awarded to the group to develop the Colin Empowerment Project before applying for stage two of the grant totalling £1,000,000 over five years.

The Empowerment Project will consist of a father’s worker, parent’s coordinator, youth counsellor and a volunteer coordinator, along with a 24 hour suicide prevention helpline, nutrition and physical activity programmes and nurturing projects, which will be delivered and placed in local schools.

The group have employed a consultant, who will facilitate local focus groups and further development of the project. Stage Two application and Business Plan have to be submitted by September 2008.

Annette McCann, Families’ Community Development Worker for the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership said,

“Successful funding for the Empowerment Project will have a huge positive impact on the Colin area. Health and wellbeing is a major priority within the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership and the success of this application will go a long way in building confidence and self esteem, social inclusion and families having a positive relationship.”

Youth Celebration EventA Youth Celebration event was held on Wednesday 19th March in the Colin Youth Development Centre to highlight and celebrate the achievements of local young people.

The Youth Strategy subgroup of the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership arranged the event as a mechanism to counteract all the negative publicity that young people regularly receive.

Sean Devine, Chairperson of the Youth Strategy Subgroup explained

“It was brilliant to see all of the hard work that the young people have been involved in displayed at the event. Too often a negative image of our young people is portrayed in the media and the wonderful work that the majority of them are involved in is forgotten. I would like to thank all of the youth workers and anyone who volunteers their time for helping our young people to achieve their goals and therefore investing in the future of the Colin area.”

Parents, young people and the wider community attended the event which included a fun filled evening of activities such as DJ workshops, archery, climbing wall, drumming workshop, fire service show and traditional music workshops. Speeches were also made by members of the Colin Youth Forum and Conor Murphy, Minister for Regional Development.

Mr Murphy praised the young people at the event,

“I would like to congratulate the young people for all of their achievements. It is great to see them take the initiative to highlight such important issues as the environment and the harmful effects of drugs.”

Annie Armstrong, Manager of the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership concluded by saying,

In conjunction with this celebration we also launched the Annual Colin Youth Awards which will take place this time next year. These events will award many individuals and groups for their achievements over the next 12 months. Please look out for more information regarding the Awards in 2009 as we will be asking the community to nominate the individuals and groups for these awards.”

ENVIRONMENTAL WEEK- Clean Up Your Community

ST PATRICK’S DAY

The Armagh Rhymers preformed their famous Mummers’ Play for a lucky audience in the Dairy Farm Shopping Centre on Thursday 13th March in the run up to St Patrick’s Day.

The mummers play brought to life characters such as St Patrick (and his battle with the Turkish Knight!), Dick Darby the Cobbler, Slick Slack (with the wife and children on his back!), Big Head, Oliver Cromwell, and the Doctor (with his bag of medicines and cures).

The play was a succession of ‘mini-dramas’, each overlapping the other and keeping the audience (and actors) on their toes. Amidst the music and comedy there were universal themes of death and resurrection, and good triumphing over evil!

Local children attended an interactive workshop before the performance where they sang, danced and acted in various mini dramas. The children were then able to participate in the main performance using the skills that they had learned.

Watch out for the Armagh Rhymers who will be back in Colin in October 2008.

Colin Environmental Week will take place from the 21st to the 25th April 2008.

The area will see a series of anti graffiti blitzes and clean up’s of waste ground not formally owned by Lisburn City Council or DSD.

On Thursday of this week (24th) an environmental information day will be held in the Dairy Farm Shopping Centre giving passers by information and advice on recycling, energy efficiency, waste management and water services.

To coincide with the theme of this week the Colin Youth Forum has been working on an environmental project – ‘The Right to a Clean Environment’ in partnership with WIMPS. This project aims to raise awareness of the rights of young people to a clean environment as well as developing individual skills such as lobbying, film making etc. The young people have also designed promotional material in the form of bumper stickers, posters and banners which will all be displayed during the information day.

For more information on the activities that will be happening this week contact Michael on 90623813 or michael@

Rita Hatton has always been passionate about writing and has been successful in writing competitions since her primary school days.

“I have always loved reading and writing and have done bits and pieces my whole life but I thought it was time to get serious and pull everything together which is how my new book, Titters and Tears came about.

Rita, originally from Tyrone moved to Belfast in 1947 and then to Twinbrook 36 years ago.

“It was hard to fit my writing in with six children but I managed to go back to college when I was in my 40’s and do O Level English Language and English Literature, in which I obtained 2 A’s. In 2001 I joined a writing group in Conway Mill which really helped me to focus on my writing again.

I have entered many competitions in my life and I have been very successful, I actually won two mountain bikes recently after entering a poetry competition with NI Electricity, one of which I am raffling for charity. One competition that sticks out in my head was in the 1970’s where I won £1 after coming 2nd in a competition about retailing memories of the 1950’s, the first prize was £10”, laughed Rita.

“I would encourage anyone who is passionate about writing to stick at it and not get distracted. I’m sorry that I didn’t write a book year’s ago, but it’s better now than never. Don’t give up, even if someone doesn’t like your ideas, persevere and believe in yourself.”

Rita will launch her book on Thursday 10th April at the John Hewitt bar in Belfast. For more info contact Ciara MGuigan at 90608813.

Jane Adams, from Upper Dunmurry Lane, has always been a camogie fanatic ever since she joined her first club, St Malachy’s at primary school. She then transferred to Rossa where she currently plays as team captain. Jane also represents her County as captain of the Antrim Senior Camogie Team.

“I love playing Camogie and I have been very successful up to now. When I was 13 I won the All Ireland Title with Rossa. The team have also won four Ulster titles in a row which no other team has accomplished and reached the All Ireland final which no other Belfast team has achieved.

Jane, who was brought onto the Antrim Senior team when she was just 15, has also been extremely successful representing her County.

“I have been very successful with Antrim, winning three all Ireland Titles and several Ulster Titles. We were actually the first team from Ulster to win the All Irelands and I was so proud to be made player of the tournament.

Camogie is a big time commitment if you are serious about achieving at a high level but it is worth it when you see your team doing well. The most important thing is remember to have fun when you’re playing and listen to the coaches’ instructions and advice. Camogie is a team sport so it is vital that we support each other to reach our full potential.”

Margaret McCulloughMargaret McCullough from Alton in Lagmore has fought against the odds to successfully complete a Competent Helper course in 2007 and the advanced Competent Helper course in 2008.

“I never thought that I had the time or ability to go back to education but after a lot of encouragement and reassurance I started the Competent Helper course in 2006. I have six children at home so it was hard to juggle but I enjoyed the course so much that I made it work. It was a huge boost to get my certificate and I was so proud to successfully complete the course. As soon as it was finished I sighed up for the advanced course and I have just finished it. Over the last few years I have also completed courses in Suicide Prevention, Self Harm and First Aid.

I now hope to progress onto the third level of the course and I have ambitions for the future to work with the elderly or neglected teenagers in order to give something back into the community.

I would recommend anyone who is considering going back to education to go for it. You will always think that you have no time but it is important to make time for yourself. These courses have opened so many doors and given me so many new experiences.”

Johnny Flynn

An absolute star and a role model for the Colin area – the words that St Colm’s principal Imelda Jordan uses to describe 18 year old Johnny Flynn, the budding young footballer from Poleglass who has recently been signed for Blackburn Rovers.

Johnny explained that football has been his passion for as long as he can remember and he is thrilled to have been signed for Blackburn Rovers.

“I have played for a few clubs over the years including Glenbawn Celtic, Celtic Boys, Newhill and most recently Ballymena United, were I was promoted to the 1st team in 2007. I went to Blackburn for trials for the reserve team in November 2007 but had to wait until the transfer window opened in January of this year before I could sign for the club. On 21st January I went over to the club for a medical and was thrilled to agree my contract with the Chairman of the club.

My dream is to break into the first team at Blackburn and to play football at the highest level in the premiership and internationally. I have supported Liverpool all my life so it would extra special to play for them someday.

The staff at St Colm’s High School have been so supportive especially as they are allowing me to continue studying for my A Levels via email and the internet. It is important for me to finish my studies as you never know what is round the corner, especially in sports, and it is bonus to have something to fall back on.

I would say to all of the young footballers out there that it is important to dream and set your goals high. If you work hard and give 100% at every game you will get that bit closer to achieving them.”

INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAYWomen were celebrated in the Colin area on 6th March to coincide with International Women’s Day 2008. The Colin Domestic Violence Forum organised the event to celebrate the achievements of women in society and to highlight issues around domestic violence.

Davette Martin, Domestic Violence Co-coordinator for Colin area explained, “The aim is to acknowledge the achievement and contribution of women to society, therefore fulfilling the objective of the Forum by bringing women together to promote empowerment and share ideas. We wanted to show how far women have come and help others to look to the future by showcasing and highlighting the opportunities and possibilities for women in today’s society.

The Colin Domestic Violence Forum also took this opportunity to raise awareness and highlight the issue of Domestic Abuse. We hope that this event will give hope to those who suffer in silence and provide them with information about the support that is available at a local level.”

The celebration commenced with a ‘Circle of Hope’ at the Teeling Roundabout.

Annie Armstrong, Manager of the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership explained, “The Circle of Hope is a visual display of the power women coming together can have on tackling this issue and on raising confidence in those who are affected by it. Although the Circle of Hope represents a community against domestic violence we also want to celebrate our women by displaying their achievements.”

COMMUNITY SAFETY CONFERENCE

Representatives of the Colin Community gained an insight into the processes and procedures of the criminal justice system at a conference on Friday 29th February 2008.

Agencies involved in the judicial process such as the PSNI, Northern Ireland Prison Service, Community Restorative Justice, NI Housing Executive, Lisburn City Council, Lisburn Community Safety Partnership and Public Prosecution Service addressed the conference and explained their roles in the process. Representatives from the Lord Chief Justice’s Office were also in attendance.

Annie Armstrong, Manager of CNP said she was delighted to see all of the agencies who represent the judicial system together in one room.

“This is the first time that these agencies have come together like this for a community event. Today was about providing people with answers and restoring confidence within the community regarding the judiciary.”

Chairperson of Colin Community Safety Subgroup, Jim McCarthy commented:

“If those of us dealing with criminal activity issues are asking the community to buy into the system we need to make them aware of how they can assist in this process and the information that the relevant agencies need to prevent crime. This conference gave us an opportunity to do this and I think we all learned something.”

Autism Parents Support Group formed by local mother

A local mother from Poleglass, Ann Marie McCullough, whose daughter and son have been diagnosed with Autism, has taken it on herself to establish a support group for parents in the Colin area.

During an interview Ann Marie explained,

“When Sarah Louise was born she was premature and it wasn’t until she was nearly three that she was diagnosed with Autism. This was a very frustrating time for me as a mother as I knew there was something wrong but was continually told that the problems were due to her being premature. We waited 16 months for an appointment to see the ASD clinic which was equally frustrating. When Sarah Louise was diagnosed I wanted to find out as much information as I could. Autism NI where very helpful however I couldn’t help but feel isolated and alone. It is very difficult to understand Autism unless you live with it day and daily, the fits and aggressiveness make it difficult to cope. This is why I was determined to set up a support group for local parents so that we could share our experiences and advice.

It bothered me that there is such a negative stigma attached to autism, which I believe is down to a lack of understanding of the condition. I don’t believe in giving up or saying I can’t, especially as I was told that Sarah Louise would never walk or be able to piece a jigsaw together and after a lot of hard work we have accomplished both. I feel strongly that is it important to praise my children as it gives them a sense of success and enthusiasm.

I would like to see more inclusive services in Colin including safer housing, a chance for independent living, fun activities and acceptance for those who suffer from autism. Our family are very lucky that we have just managed to have our house renovated to provide my children with a better quality of life, services that I believe more families deserve.”

If you would like to get involved in the Autism support group which is based in Sally Gardens Community Centre in Poleglass, contact Ann Marie on 07857035231

Success of RefreshEileen Wilson is a married woman with a teenage family living and working in Colin. Her working background is in the catering industry and she came to work in a small domestic kitchen providing breakfast and snack lunches for Footprints Women’s Centre users and their children. Eileen identified a need to promote healthy eating very early on and quickly designed a nutrition policy. She was indeed ahead of her time and within the Women’s Sector is recognised as Jamie Oliver’s predecessor, prioritising good nutrition as the key to improving health.

Following Footprints’ move to their new facility, Eileen now operating from a fully equipped industrial kitchen and supported by Footprints Women’s Centre has developed a thriving Catering Business, Contract Catering Service and Refresh Healthy Eating Programme.

Eileen spearheaded Footprints Research project, which was published in 2004 and highlighted the difficulties for local people in accessing fresh produce. As a result of this a Food Policy Initiative was established under the leadership of Footprints and this drew in partners from across the multi-agency spectrum. The work of this group prompted a review of diet and nutrition policies within Down and Lisburn Trust. Eileen represented the community perspective on the Diet

and Nutrition Strategy Group effecting an improved service for the Colin area from Down and Lisburn Trust.

Alongside this Eileen has developed many innovative diet and nutrition programmes to involve and engage children and parents of all ages. Whether it’s through junior cook-it, the food is fun programme or dinners for senior citizens Eileen promotes healthy eating in a way that effects change.

The significance and impact of this work has been recognised by the Food Standards Agency, who as early as 2004 cited Eileen’s Food is Fun programme as an example of good practice and this has informed government policy on obesity. In 2005 Footprints Women’s Centre received the Glaxo Smith Kline Award for its contribution to improving community health.

Eileen has been invited to profile her Refresh Healthy Eating Programme at the Sustain and Food Access Network UK annual conference in 2008. She continues her work both within Footprints and the Colin Nutrition and Physical Activity sub-group as well as being deployed to develop and co-ordinate health projects as part of the extended schools programme at St Luke’s PS.

Our volunteers are very committed and I would like to extend my congratulations to Linda Sadlier, a volunteer with the 50+ Forum who has been nominated for the

Mayor’s Award in Lisburn, for her work with the Senior Citizens in the Colin Area.

The Colin 50+ Forum is soon to become a sub-group of the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership and we look forward to developing projects which will improve the health and well being of all “50+ers” in the Colin area. If you would like to get involved in the 50+ Forum contact 90 623813”
