Colgate 10 7 3 0 -- 20Cal Poly 0 0 0 14 -- 14

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Colgate put on a near picture-perfect display for three quarters and then held off a furious Cal Poly rally to post a 20-14 intersectional victory over the No. 23 Mustangs. With the ESPNU cameras rolling and a national TV audi-ence tuned in, Colgate jumped to a 20-0 lead through the first 45 minutes. James Holland Jr., returned from injury to rush for a 17-yard touchdown and Alex Mathews added a 57-yard scamper to highlight the Raider offense. Carmine Scarfone emerged relatively unscathed from his first collegiate start and first collegiate snap. Scarfone led his opening drive of the game 75 yards in 11 plays for a Chris Puzzi 27-yard field goal. He finished 8-of-15 passing for 94 yards and one interception. Puzzi added a 35-yarder in the third quarter for Colgate’s 20-0 cushion. Cal Poly scored TDs with 14:22 and 7:07 remaining in the game and was driving for the winning points in the closing minutes. The Mustangs had converted three straight fourth-down conversions before they were foiled on the final at-tempt when Abu Daramy-Swaray batted down a Khaleel Jen-kins pass with 37 seconds left. Colgate’s win is its first to open a season since a 37-34 overtime triumph over Albany back in 2011. The last time the Raiders began with a road victory was the 15-1 national championship game season of 2003 that started 20-19 at Georgetown. HAMILTON – In a game that lived up to its top-25 hype, Richmond’s Griffin Trau kicked a 27-yard field goal with 1:29 remaining to lift the Spiders past Colgate 20-17. The ninth-ranked visitors needed 13 fourth-quarter points to overcome the No. 25 Raiders for the second year in a row. Richmond won 38-31 last year in Virginia en route to an NCAA playoff quarterfinal appearance. This year’s contest was much more defensive in nature. Colgate led 14-7 entering the fourth quarter thanks to a defense that refused to yield inside the red zone. The Raiders in the first half held Richmond scoreless on three out of four trips inside the 20. But the Spiders got a 1-yard TD run from Gordon Collins on the first play of the fourth quarter and consecutive Trau field goals later in the stanza. Those 13 points offset Chris Puzzi’s 25-yard field goal for Colgate that tied the game 17-17 with 3:58 remaining. Quartertback Grant Breneman in his first collegiate game was the Colgate rushing leader with 67 yards on 15 carries. Colgate’s Tyler Castillo led all tacklers with 11. Safety Alec Wisniewski posted his first career interception to halt a Rich-mond drive in the third. Colgate’s backfield trio of Holland, Alex Mathews and Ma-lik Twyman combined for 22 rushing attempts and 113 yards. HAMILTON – Furman scored on six consecutive first-half possessions to help the Paladins post a 45-14 decision. After Colgate limited Furman to three-and-out on the opening drive, the visitors scored three straight touchdowns. Colgate’s only score of the first half came in the closing seconds when rookie Grant Breneman hit junior Owen Rock-ett with a 15-yard TD pass. Those two hooked up again in the third quarter as Breneman posted his first multi-TD passing game and Rockett caught two scoring tosses for the first time in his career. Rockett finished with nine receptions for 113 yards and the two scores – all career highs. Alex Mathews in his first career start was a workhorse for Colgate in the backfield, carrying 20 times for 62 yards and adding one pass reception. Breneman finished 21-of-39 pass-ing for 217 yards and the two TDs against no interceptions. Nick Wheeler led Colgate in tackles with a career-high 11. BUFFALO, N.Y. – Short-handed Colgate stepped into the FBS level of Division I football and dropped a 33-10 decision to Buffalo. The Raiders played without injured defensive starter Pat Afriyie, Trent Williams, Tyler Castillo and Ben Hunt, while rookie quarterback Grant Breneman made his first career start. But this night belonged to the Bulls, who streaked to a 30-3 halftime lead and chalked up 486 yards of total offense for the game. Six-foot-7 quarterback Tyree Jackson led the way, throwing for 184 yards and rushing for another 97. T.J. Holl led all tacklers with 18, setting a personal career high for the second time in three games. Holl entered the game leading the Patriot League and ranked second nation-ally in tackles. Breneman again paced the Raiders in rushing with 68 yards on 14 attempts, despite taking a pair of sacks. He com-pleted 6-of-23 through the air for an additional 56 yards. Malik Twyman came off the bench in the second half and scored his first collegiate touchdown late in the third quarter. Alec Wisniewski, Nick Alvarez, Cortney Mimms and Nick Ioa-nilli all set career tackle highs in the game. ITHACA, N.Y. – This one was for Frank. Colgate ended a challenging stretch of games and picked up some needed momentum ahead of next week’s Patriot League opener with a 21-7 win over Cornell. The victory also closed a rough week on a better note for Raiders head coach Dan Hunt. Hunt’s father, Frank, died the previous Saturday in St. Johnsville, New York, not far from the family home in Canajoharie. He was 80. In the locker room after the game, the players presented an emotional Hunt with the game ball. Colgate’s defense welcomed Pat Afriyie back to the fold and threw a sack party in his honor. A record-breaking sack party, no less. Nine times the Raiders took down Cornell quarterback Dalton Banks in the Big Red backfield, including career game highs from Nick Wheeler (three) and Connor Buck (two). They even let Afriyie in on the fun with his 25th career sack early in the second quarter. It was the preseason All-American’s first game action since being injured in the open-er at Cal Poly. Thomas Ives also was back on the field after a two-game injury absence. He led a balanced receiving corps with four catches for 35 yards and his first touchdown of the season. Colgate’s three scoring drives covered 10, 12 and 15 plays. The clincher was a thing of beauty: 50 yards in 15 plays, eat-ing up 6:46. This was the 99th meeting between Colgate and Cornell. The Raiders trail 49-47-3 in the series but have won 16 of the last 19 and eight of nine. Next year’s 100th meeting takes place Oct. 13.

HAMILTON – Three touchdowns called back because of penalties, a crushing unsportsmanlike flag on the closing drive and then the only turnover of the game. Those breaks were too much to overcome as Colgate dropped a 41-38 decision to Lehigh in the Patriot League opener for both teams. The Raiders scored just three points instead of 21 because of the three nullifying penalties. And Colgate was driving to tie or take the lead late when yet another marker set them back. Colgate drove into Lehigh territory late and, on second-and-9 at the Mountain Hawk 40, Breneman hit Martinsen for a 29-yard completion to the 11. But Colgate was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play, backing the Raiders up to the Lehigh 26. Two plays later, Colgate fumbled the handoff for the game’s only turnover. Lehigh’s Mark Walker made the recov-ery with 1:49 remaining and the Mountain Hawks converted one first down to ice the game.

HAMILTON – Colgate put together its best performance of the season in a 38-12 dismantling of Fordham. James Holland Jr. rushed for a career-high 166 yards and Grant Breneman hit Tre Caine for a pair of touchdown passes as Colgate won its first home game of the season and moved to 1-1 in Patriot League play. The Raiders rushed for a season-high 263 yards and lim-ited Fordham to just 64 on the ground. Breneman threw for a season-high three touchdowns and now has nine over his last four games. He also completed his fifth consecutive game without an interception, a streak of 130 pass attempts. Caine’s TD receptions were from 2 and 14 yards out, while Nick Martinsen hauled in the other scoring pass from 6 yards out to help the Raiders build a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Colgate’s defense sacked Fordham reserve quarterback Luke Medlock five times, including two by Nick Wheeler. Dillon DeIuliis was the leading Colgate tackler with a ca-reer-high eight. He also came up with his first collegiate inter-ception to set up Chris Puzzi’s field goal just before halftime that put Colgate in front 17-0.

WORCESTER, Mass. – Colgate turned in its best perfor-mance of the season – for the second week in a row, no less – with a 45-7 dismantling of Holy Cross. The 38-point victory marked the largest winning margin by the Raiders over Holy Cross in 80 football meetings, dating to 1917. Colgate also won its sixth straight in the series to equal the best Raider winning streak against their longtime northeastern rivals. Grant Breneman threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a pair of second-half scores, while a pick-six by Dillon DeIuliis on the first play of the second half highlight-ed three Raider interceptions. James Holland Jr., topped the 100-yard rushing mark for the second week in a row, finishing with 109. And four Col-gate receivers caught at least three passes. That included Thomas Ives, who finished with three re-ceptions for a career-high 92 yards and a touchdown. The TD was a 59-yard reception from Breneman – a one-play drive – that matched Ives’ career long catch. Colgate put four sacks on the board by four different Raid-ers. Pat Afriyie earned the 26th quarterback takedown of his career, just 2½ shy of the program record. Tyler Castillo and Ben Hunt IV had the other two interceptions.

2017 COLGATE FOOTBALL SEASON REVIEWCOLGATE 40Bucknell 3Oct. 28 -- Andy Kerr Stadium, Hamilton

Bucknell 3 0 0 0 -- 3Colgate 6 27 0 7 -- 40

HAMILTON – Colgate Football had a really good day – all across the Empire State. While the Raiders were taking care of business against Bucknell to the tune of a 40-3 Senior Day thumping, Fordham vaulted Colgate back into the Patriot League championship picture with a 45-35 upset of Lehigh in the Bronx. One week after posting the largest win over Holy Cross in 100 years of series history, the Raiders put the third-largest win on Bucknell in a series that dates to 1894. Colgate’s defense played a huge role Saturday. The three points allowed were the fewest since a 19-0 shutout of Georgetown back in 2014, and the fewest by a Bucknell team against Colgate since a 20-2 Raiders victory back in 1979. Nick Ioanilli intercepted two passes and Pat Afriyie led the team with eight tackles. The Raiders put three more sacks on the board – one apiece by Connor Buck, Nick Wheeler and Abu Daramy-Swaray. The offense was lights out in the first half, and especially during a 27-point second quarter. Colgate by intermission had accumulated 293 of its 386 total yards and 15 of its 19 first downs before cooling the jets in the second half. Thomas Ives caught two TD passes for the first time in his career and Nick Diaco added another, while James Holland Jr., Grant Breneman and Alex Mathews all ran for scores. Brene-man tied his season high with the three TD completions. Colgate 0 14 13 0 -- 27Lafayette 0 0 0 0 -- 0

EASTON, Pa. – Colgate’s defense came to play and posted the first Raider shutout in three years with a 27-0 whitewash of Lafayette. Nick Ioanilli returned an interception for his first career TD to cap a series of three big defensive and special teams contributions in the third quarter. The Raiders turned an in-terception and blocked field goal into field goals of their own before Ioanilli iced Colgate’s fourth straight win with his 33-yard pick six. The other two big plays also were collegiate firsts. Aidan Gaertner returned his first career interception 63 yards to tee up a Chris Puzzi field goal. And Abu Daramy-Swaray swooped around end for his first collegiate blocked kick to result in an-other Puzzi three-pointer. Daramy-Swaray led the Raiders with seven tackles and a career-high three pass breakups. Nick Wheeler finished with 1½ sacks, Connor Buck added one and Pat Afriyie contributed a half-sack as Colgate upped its league-leading total to 28. Lafayette’s defense frustrated the Raiders for most of the day, but Colgate did put 14 big points on the board in the second quarter. Owen Rockett scored on a 17-yard double-reverse and Grant Breneman ran in his sixth TD of the season from 1 yard out. The Raider defense was really tough when it mattered be-cause statistics showed a game that should have been close. First downs finished 16 apiece, Colgate outgained Lafay-ette in total yards just 258-213, and time of possession went only slightly in Colgate’s favor by 30:51 to 29:09. But the Raiders scored on all four trips into the red zone, while Lafayette was 0-of-1. Colgate also held the Leopards to 4-of-13 on third down and 0-of-3 on fourth down.
