While a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) is a relatively new growing environment in cold-water aquaculture, significant advancements have been made so that it is a viable consideration for commercial aquaculture.

A Taste of BC Aquafarms in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada is a venture that was spawned through the Freshwater Aquaculture Action plan of the Interprovin-cial Partnership for Sustainable Freshwater Aquaculture Development (IPSFAD). The Taste of BC Aquafarms Model farm was designed to produce 100 mT annually of Steelhead Trout using recirculating aquaculture and circular culture tank technologies.
