2.02Whatever the outside temperature, we have cold conditions at this site Most of the time working in the cold is just uncomfortable. When things get really nasty outside, or we spend prolonged periods of time inside the freezer, there is a potential for some serious problems.

2.04Our extremities, are usually the first victims Because our fingers and toes generally carry less blood, than the main portion of our body, there is less exchange of heat.As the body feels less and less heat the blood vessels contract which makes us feel numb or get a tingling sensation. If we stay in these cold conditions, the skin will change color. And if we stay even longer, blisters will form and eventually well become unconscious

2.2How about Hypothermia?Internal ShutdownLow body temperaturesUnconsciousnessDeath

2.05Another hazard to watch out for is hypothermia. This occurs when you are exposed to cold condition long enough to affect your internal body temperature. Hypothermia is the term used to describe dangerously low body temperatures. Like frostbite, it can result in loss of consciousness or death.Hypothermia also begins with feeling very cold. This cold feeling can turn into pain and the stiffness in the extremities. It can lead to drowsiness, slurred speech, and lack of coordination, difficulty in breathing and even disorientation.2.2Ben & Jerrys PreventionAnticipateCoverLayersMoveTake BreaksGet Out Rotate Tasks

2.06Preventive MeasuresIf you know you are going to work outside or in a cold environment ahead of time, use your head to prevent these problems.Be sure your hands, feet, face, and head are covered.Dress in layers. The best bet is heavy cotton or wool underneath, and a waterproof jacket on top.Keep moving. This keeps the blood flowing, keeps you warm, and wards off frostbite and hypothermia.Take your scheduled breaks. Don't play superhero. It's a lot healthier to take your scheduled breaks to avoid getting overly cold.Never take cold conditions lightly. They can be deadly.
