The Coldwater Board of Direc-tors is happy to announce a new website, the ability to Donate online while bringing added infor-mation, activities and value (deals) to the Coldwater Lake Member-ship. We will be also helping to coordinate all the lake communi-ties in Branch County concerning safety, water quality, legislation, and other “Taxing” issues that impact the quality of Lake living and the experience it brings. Issues that individuals or small groups would not be able to accomplish or voice on their own can also be addressed.

To accomplish these goals, we have enlisted the resources of the “Elite 8” Gold Sponsors. These 8 are committed to the area’s quality of life but also recognizes the

“fun” and the economic impact that a vibrant Lake community brings a competitive edge in attracting businesses and jobs.

The “Elite 8” Gold Sponsors in alphabetical order are : Branch County Tourism Bureau, Century Bank & Trust, Coldwater Area Chamber of Commerce, Coldwater Lake Marina, Community Health Center of Branch County, Lake Drive Marine, Mosquito Shield of West Michigan, and Southern Michigan Bank &Trust.

We look forward to both their continued support in the future and the support that the membership can bring to those “Elite 8” while enjoying all that the Lake offers.

Seconds count in dealing with drown-ing, heart attack, and water or land accidents. The life they save could be yours, or that of a friend, a neighbor or a loved one. In 2015, the Coldwa-ter Lake Association received dona-tions for the Lakeland Fire Depart-ment for $9624 .

2014 Lake Fire Dept. donations of $11,000 purchased needed life saving air compressor equipment that can run multiple pieces of equipment like the Jaws of Life. Cutting the time in saving lives!

The Lakeland Fire Department serves all of Ovid and Kinderhook Township with 22 members, 1 engine, 2 tankers, 2 grass trucks and 1 rescue truck. The department responds to an average of 200 calls a year. This includes fires, EMS calls and rescues. These are the unsung heroes that come to help and assist at all hours of the day and night. If you know any of them personally, remember to thank them for donating their time.

History : The Lakeland Fire de-

partment was conceived at the Annual meeting of the Coldwater Lake Association in August, 1981. Marty Beatty brought a Federal truck that belonged to the Hillsdale DNR to the meeting. A nine member board was elected that day.

During the winter months, men went to school for training. Feb-ruary 1982 was the department startup date. Pancake breakfasts were held monthly at the Coldwa-ter Lake Association Building to help fund the Lakeland Fire De-partment. Continued budget in-creases and mandates at the State & Federal levels put added strain on the Fire dept. budget. This is why it is important to keep sup-porting the Lakeland Fire Dept. through your generous donations.

Additional Improvements were ap-

proved in 2015 for the Coldwater Lake

Association Building. A new Floor

overhaul in early 2016 completes the

capital improvements along with the

installation of an automatic Natural Gas

Generac emergency generator for the

Coldwater Lake Association building

located at 516 Warren Rd. The upgrad-

ed back up power allows emergency

power to run the entire building at any

time including the heating and cooling

systems. The old gasoline powered

generator only supplied limited power

and required the need for additional

gasoline and attention during a power outage. The new system runs on

natural gas.

Don Beck, who oversaw the installation said "This building now can be

used more effectively not only when power goes out when rented, but

also can be used as an emergency shelter. Other uses could include a

command/triage center for the Red Cross, fire and police departments

and such, during a natural disaster or emergency situation."

The parking lot has also been improved and enlarged to handle additional

parking needs. Building rentals have been increasing mainly due to the

remodeling and upgrades of the building over the past 3 years.

Lake Association Building Rental Information The newly remodeled

Coldwater Lake Association building is available for rent for special occa-

sions. Daily Rental: $100.00 member $125.00 non-member, Deposit

service window, microwave, ample parking space, central air and heat.

Year round!

Weed control continues in 2016. The mission of weed control is not to eliminate veg-etation which is important to the health of fish and wildlife in the Marble-Coldwater Lake chain. It is to eliminate exotic invasive vegetation called Mil-foil that does not belong in our chain. It can become so wide-spread that left untreated can not only destroy lake ecosys-

tems but also property values. The problem in our chain has become so advanced in certain areas that the program will be eliminating the invasive vegetation for the next four years! The Milfoil has been professionally recognized with surveys of our chain along with an aquatic study. The Coldwater Lake Association contributed $1000 towards the Coldwa-ter/Marble Lake Chain evaluation. GPS points were established and these points will be the focus of attention through 2019.

When the treatment is applied near your property, warnings will be posted advising to eliminate swimming for one day, unless it states otherwise. Many of you have already experienced the existence of these nuisance weeds in front of your shoreline. Any questions concerning the program or chemicals used should be directed to Branch County Drain Commissioner at 517-279-4310

Don’t Let the Beauty Fool You-Danger MUTE SWAN ISSUE

Per the DNR, Mute Swans are an invasive non-native species that pose a growing threat to native animals, habitat and people. Why Are Mute Swans a Problem? There are three pr imary issues with mute swans: 1. Threat to humans. Mute swans are large, conspicuous birds and have little fear of humans. The mute swan can attack people in watercraft and on shore. 2. Danger to Native wildlife 3. The Destruc-tion of wetland habitat. To learn more, please visit www.michigan.gov/dnr Click on Wildlife & Habitat → Wildlife Species → Mute Swans .

All Townships from the North and South Chain of lakes approved DNR removal of the invasive mute swans except Kinderhook Town-ship that took no action. By doing so, no action could be taken in the Ovid Township area of Coldwater Lake. Please report any incidents on Coldwater Lake to DNR, Branch Sheriff’s Dept. and the Kinderhook

Township.

How To Tell a Mute Swan from a Native Swan: The most notable difference between mute swans and the two native swan species found in Michigan (trumpeter swan and tundra swan) is that adult mute swans have orange bills. The two native swans have black bills. What is the DNR Doing? The DNR's Mute Swan Management and Control Program Policy and Procedures outlines both shor t- and long-term population goals for mute swans in Michigan. How Can I Remove Mute Swans on My Property? If you have mute swans on your property and wish to remove them or their nests and eggs, you must request a permit from your local DNR office call 517-373-1263.

COLDWATER LAKE STATE PARK The Parks & Recreation Division of the DNR, in association with the Branch County/Coldwater Country Conference and Visitors Bureau, has developed a General Management Plan for Coldwater Lake State Park located on the south shores of Coldwater Lake in southern Branch County. This 400- acre state park is currently undeveloped and used primarily for hunting.

Additional information on the DNR’s General Management Plan at www.michigan.gov/parkmanagementplans. Click on Coldwater Lake State Park. Another link for information is: http:// www.michigan.gov/coldwaterlake. What the association has learned no boat launch, swimming area or camping will be developed.

All comments and questions on the management planning process should be directed to: Debbie Jensen, Park Management Plan Administrator E-mail:[email protected]. Ph: 517-284-6105

COLDWATER- The Coldwater Lake Association donated life jackets to the marine patrol as part of a loan program. The loan program will take the place of administering tickets for non-compliance with the DNR life jacket laws especially when it comes to infant and children life jackets. Each life jacket will be numbered and tagged with drop-off information. Coldwater Lake boaters will be allowed to use the life jackets for the day and must promptly return them to one of several drop locations. Sgt. Rick Holtgrave said "Two of the easiest ways to get stopped are, first, if a child on the boat doesn't have a life vest on and second, if it is not an approved DNR life jacket. " Part of the problem is that most stores do not properly display information about the jacket and if it is approved for boating. Don Beck, V.P. of Coldwater Lake Association, said “We want to promote safety on the lakes - this is our lake and we want it to be safe for adults and kids. We work closely with the Branch County Sheriff Maine Patrol and Sheriff’s department. To donate boat approved life jackets ,please contact the Branch County Sheriff Marine Patrol at:

517-278-2325.

Sheriffs Dept. Golf Cart UPDATE Golf Carts must be Street Legal and driven by a licensed driver on County and lake roads.

Children or Kid driv-en golf carts will be ticketed as an unli-censed driver and may delay obtaining a driv-er’s license in the State of Michigan. Kid driv-ers pose increasing dangers for pedestrians and auto drivers around the lakes.
