    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

    Motorsport Connections (MSCN) Cold Fire System is a pre-engineered fire suppression system that is purpose

    designed for vehicle (race car) applications.

    Race cars pose a unique challenge with regards to fire

    prevention and suppression. The combination of large

    amounts of volatile fuel, speed, extremely hot surfaces

    and electrical components creates an environment that has

    an inherently high fire risk. Vehicle fires are not uncommon,

    but there are ways to reduce the potential risks and

    consequences.

    The fire risk can be reduced by plumbing design, such as reducing surface heat by lagging of exhaust systems,

    separating fuel and ignition sources, using non-combustible materials, fitting fire resistant cables and plumbing,

    sealing firewall between the engine and driver, shielding of vulnerable components and providing emergency

    shutdown of the fuel sources.

    Operating procedures and good maintenance practices are just as

    important. A well maintained race car poses a much lower fire risk.

    Although considerably reduced when these preventive measures are in

    place, there always remains a certain residual fire risk.

    MSCN Cold Fire Systems greatly reduces risk to people, property and the

    environment by providing effective fire protection and therefore safer

    operating conditions. It has been purpose designed to suppress

    hydrocarbon fuel & oil fires by application of an environmentally friendly

    film forming foam extinguishing agent known as Cold Fire.

    MSCN Cold Fire Systems are self-contained and require no electrical, pneumatic or gas cartridge activation devices.

    The flexibility of the design allows it to be custom fitted to almost any type of race car. It caters for vehicle

    protection in Drag Racing, Salt Racing, Circuit and Marine applications were conditions can be severe.

    The system uses a patented design valve (head assembly) on an alloy tank with a system operating pressure of 360

    psi. Activation of system is achieved by pushing button normally mounted in drivers compartment. Usually there is

    a flag or fail safe pin which needs to be removed prior to the bottle needing to be discharged.

    There are two ways the MSCN Cold Fire System can be activated:

    Manually by operating a push button or lever mounted in drivers cabin.

    Electrically by operating a solenoid valve to release the air pressure from a

    remote air bottle. This is an optional accessory and not fitted to standard

    During discharge, the nozzles spray a full cone pattern of Cold Fire agent.

    There are 3 size bottles available to provide adequate area coverage and cooling

    for any size vehicles. For larger cars or extended system discharge time, the

    MSCN Cold Fire System design caters for multiple tank installation. This is

    common in Doorslammer and Funny car applications where 20lb (2x 10lb bottles

    are required).

    All nozzles, fittings and plumbing are either Brass or Alloy therefore highly

    corrosion resistant. The system operates on pressure differential rather than

    numerous moving or sliding parts and therefore requires minimal maintenance.

    Fast Fact:

    Cold Fire is an advanced wetting agent that is perfect for the racing industry, able to quickly and cleanly extinguish

    everything from tyres to methanol to magnesium. It is UL rated (2N75), EPA SNAP-listed, completely non-toxic, non-

    corrosive and non-slip. It is in use at racetracks around the world, including Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Charlotte

    Motor Speedway, Watkins Glen and many others. It is used by teams and tracks for IRL, NHRA, IHRA, DIRT and IMSA,

    amongst others.

    Motorsport Connections (MSCN) Cold fire Bottles are

    available in 3 different sizes. With these 3 sizes we have

    been able to develop multiple kits that can be fitted to a wide

    range of vehicles.

    5lb 150cid

    The baby of the range this is mainly used in Pro Stock racing

    to meet the ANDRA safety requirements. Its not the answer

    to combat large fires but will help until safety services can

    arrive on the scene.

    10lb 300cid

    Used by most racers as a single bottle with x3 nozzles or x6

    nozzles with 2 bottles; this 300cid bottle, when combined

    with MSCN nozzles, becomes a force to battle any size fire!10lb 350cid

    The big brother, this bottle is mainly used in applications

    where extra nozzle pressure is important. This is very typical

    in T/A Funny Car where bottles are mounted a long way from

    drivers compartment and additional tubing is used.

    THE FIRE TRIANGLE

    When a hydrocarbon fuel is ignited, it is not the fuel, but the vapours that

    are burning. For the fire to sustain combustion, fuel, oxygen, heat and a

    chain reaction are required. If anyone of these is eliminated, the fire will go

    out. Cold Fire will cut off the oxygen supply, act as a vapour seal over the

    fuel and at the same time cool the area due to the water content in the

    foam and therefore greatly reduce the risk of re-ignition.

    THE FIRE TRIANGLE EXPLAINED

    Without sufficient heat a fire cannot begin and it cannot continue. Heat can be removed by the application of a

    substance which reduces the amount of heat available to the fire reaction. This is often water, which requires heat

    for phase change from water to steam. Introducing sufficient quantities and types of powder or gas in the flame

    reduces the amount of heat available for the fire reaction in the same manner. Scraping embers from a burningstructure also removes the heat source. Turning off the electricity in an electrical fire removes the ignition source.

    Without fuel a fire will stop. Fuel can be removed naturally, as where the fire has consumed all the burnable fuel, or

    manually, by mechanically or chemically removing the fuel from the fire. Fuel separation is an important factor in

    wild land fire suppression and is the basis for most major tactics, such as controlled burns. The fire stops because a

    lower concentration of fuel vapour in the flame leads to a decrease in energy release and a lower temperature.

    Removing the fuel thereby decreases the heat.

    Without sufficient oxygen a fire cannot begin and it cannot continue. With a decreased oxygen concentration the

    combustion process slows. In most cases, there is plenty of air left when the fire goes out so this is commonly not a

    major factor.

    Fast Fact:

    Cold Fire puts out both hydrocarbon (gas, diesel, crude) AND polar solvent (ethanol, methanol) fires. In the case of a

    methanol fire, which can burn without a visible flame, you can spray both the car and driver as a precaution; Cold

    Fire is non-toxic to the driver and non-corrosive to the car. When dry it leaves almost no residue. It will actually clean

    the track where it is sprayed because it encapsulates the loose hydrocarbons in spilled fuel without damaging the

    asphalt/tarmac.

    Does not harm the environment, fire fighters or fire victims.

    Fast Fact:

    Unlike some products Cold Fire will not damage structural paint surfaces or other materials. Its not an

    eye or skin irritant and will not clog or diminish the range of the hose-nozzle spray pattern.

    COLD FIRE MSDS

    MATERIAL SAFTEY DATA SHEET

    COLD FIRE

    Fire Suppressing AgentCOLD FIRE is a fire-suppressing agent specially formulated to rapidly snuff out Class A, B,and D fires. Prevents reflash, safe to store, handle and use, leaves virtually no residue, and is

    environmentally friendly. The chemical is water soluble and rapidly biodegradable. On a Class

    B oil fire, the chemical encapsulates the oil and prevents burning and re-ignition. It has the

    advantages of foam and dry chemical without mess, specialized apparatus or contamination to

    our environment. COLD FIRE can be used in pumpers and all types of multi-use portable

    equipment.

    Capabilities

    Suppressing Power:Quickly snuffs out fires. Kills burning fuel on contact. Prevents re-

    ignition by encapsulating fuel source. Retards smoke generation.

    Applications: Class A, B, & D fires of all types.

    Cleanup:

    None needed. Foam layer dissipates without leaving residue. Product

    biodegrades rapidly. Oil molecules do not form a tight emulsion with

    the suppressing solution.

    Dispersant

    Capability:Low. Treated oils are not dispersed in water.

    Characteristics

    pH: pH of concentrate is 6.15. Neutral when diluted.

    Flash Point: Negligible.

    Boiling Point: 100 C.Odor: Mild fresh scent. Does not contain d-limonene. Clear color.

    Water Solubility: Complete.

    Shelf Life: Indefinite when stored in closed containers between 0F and 49C.

    Dilution Strength: Use at strengths of 1% to 10% in any type of water.

    Residue: Agent layer dissipates rapidly. Product leaves no residue.

    Biodegradability: 100% in 21 days under ideal conditions.

    Hazardous

    Components:

    No components are listed in the NIOSH Recommendations for

    Occupational Health Standards, 1988, or are defined as hazardous by

    SARA, CERLA, or RCRA. No OSHA PELs are established for otheringredients.

    Handling:

    Suppressor is neutral. It will remove oil from the skin and may irritate

    the eyes if sprayed directly into them. When handling bulk concentrate,

    eye protection, gloves, and impervious clothing should be worn when

    there is danger of splashing, prolonged exposure to vapor, or prolonged

    skin contact, as with all chemicals.

    SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE

    Removal of the system from a race car can be carried out by any person. HOWEVER,there are some basic rules to

    follow.

    The bottle head is designed with a pressure release burst disc. This burst disc is what keeps pressure in the cylinder.

    Its important to remember that nothing should be allowed to press against this disc as the bottle will discharge.

    If you are required to discharge bottle for any reason follow these steps:

    Remove bottle from vehicle, being careful not to rupture the burst disc positioned in the head of the bottle. With the bottle standing in its upright position, inspect the gauge and record bottle pressure. This should be

    in the green section, around 360psi.

    Install a -04 hose on to the injector head and insure other open nipples are capped. Push down on injector head. This will rupture burst disc and discharge bottle through the -04 line (point

    away from your body).

    Wait 2-3 minutes until bottle has completely emptied.Note: If nothing happens when the injector head is depressed you must cap all hose nipples with Speedflow caps

    (820-04), tighten and send to a certified refill agent listed on the last page of this document.

    MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

    Maintaining the Cold Fire System is the purchasers, owners and operators responsibility. This section lists the

    minimum requirements for all Motorsport Connections (MSCN) Cold Fire on-board systems.

    Refilling of the system must be carried out by accredited MSCN personnel only!

    Inspection, testing and servicing of all MSCN Cold Fire Bottles must be completed every 2 years.

    All bottles are stamped with a Fill/Inspection Date. A bottle dated outside this 2 year date is deemed illegal.

    For systems that operate in aggressive environments (such as Funny Car, Doorslammer or anything with intense

    vibrations), we strongly recommended a more frequent servicing interval by inspecting after every race meeting.

    Here is a simple 10 point check list to ensure your MSCN Cold Fire System is in operating condition.

    Please note: there is no way of knowing if the bottle siphon tube has been damaged due to a crash or severe tyre

    shake. If you have experienced any of these we recommend sending your bottle back for servicing.

    1. Check that the injector head is clean, secure and undamaged.2. Check that the bottle gauge is clean, undamaged and pressure is reading around 360psi.3. Check that the nozzles and mounting brackets are clean (unblocked), secure and undamaged.4. Check that the SFI labels are in place, visible, legible and bottle is in date with ANDRA specifications.5. Check that the bottle and bottle mounting bracket are undamaged and secure.6. Check all manual activation modules for corrosion and free movement of valve handle.7. Check for free passage through all hoses and fittings by using dry nitrogen (or water).8. Record the service on the attached service tag (and in logbook if required).9. Check all -04 hose fittings are tight and leak free.10.Check to make sure hoses are not cracked or broken.

    Please note all components used with MSCN Cold Fire kits must be as per the system requirements. We do not

    allow different types of plumbing, nozzles or tee junctions to be used with the MSCN Cold Fire kits. Systems must be

    plumbed with either -04 hard tubing made from either alloy or stainless tubing. We also allow the use of -04

    stainless steel Teflon braided Hose. Plastic tube is not acceptable.

    COLD FIRE BOTTLE IDENTIFICATION FOR SFI 17.1

    All Motorsport Connection (MSCN) Cold Fire bottles are serial numbered at the bottle head and on the injector head.

    This number is recorded at all MSCN filling locations. At this time the bottle is assigned an SFI number and noted to

    which class of racing it will be used for. This information allows motor racing sanctioning bodies complete

    confidence that all racers are up to date with on-board systems. A simple bottle ID check is all thats required to

    identify bottles that have not been regularly serviced or are out of date.

    Motorsport Connections are able to service and refill bottles to the SFI 17.1 standard within Australia.

    All MSCN Cold Fire bottles must display the following numbers at the top of the bottle.

    DOT-3AL 1000 EY0003556 CLIFF DIV 05 * 12 TC-3ALM 69

    Bottles that do not display this number are unable to be serviced at any MSCN refill centre. The above bottle is the

    correct size to carry 10lb of Cold Fire Agent.

    SFI 17.1 STICKERS

    Once the SFI sticker has been placed on the bottle it may not be removed.

    SFI 17.1 stickers that have Sellotape placed over the top are deemed illegal.

    Your SFI 17.1 sticker must match that of the bottle serial number. If it does not it is illegal.
