LATE DR. LYDIA COLACO(1913 – 1993)

Dr. Lydia Colaco B.A., M.D., D.G.O., F.R.C.S., M.R.C.O.G., started the COLACO HOSPITAL, a

unit of I.C.M.C.H Trust in the year 1957. She was South India's highest qualified lady

medical practitioner . The Hospital is the first private hospital of Mangalore. In her

career spanning 50 years, she conducted more than 25,000 child deliveries, most of

which were challenging . Her dedication, talent and fame spread across the Konkan and

Malabar Coast. In her twilight years she donated the Hospital complex to the Isidore Colaco Memorial Charitable

Hospital Trust. The hospital is now a 200 bedded, state of the art multi speciality unit with a built up area of

40,000 sq.ft spread over 22,000 sq.ft of land on Bendore Main Road, in the heart of the city. The main objective of

the trust is to extend health services to the maximum number of people at the most reasonable rates and to

spread education with special emphasis on the girl child.

Nestled between the Western ghats and the Arabian Sea, Mangalore is the 8th major port of India and the 2nd

fastest growing city in the state of Karnataka. This tropical paradise is blessed with verdant green fields, palm

fringed beaches and luscious vegetation.

Mangalore has an interesting history. Its allure attracted even the great Tippu Sultan and the British East India

Company. It has been an important centre of trade for over 400 years, dealing in tile, coir, cashewnut and coconut

exports. The re-industrialization of Mangalore started with Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd., and continued

with mega projects like Mangalore Refinery and Petro Chemicals Ltd., Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers and

the G.M.R. Power Project, Thannirbhavi.

Mangalore alone offered the nation four of the 18 nationalised banks namely Corporation Bank, Vijaya Bank,

Canara Bank and Syndicate Bank. It has the distinction of having the world's highest bank branches to people

ratio. Dakshina Kannada district is the most literate district in Karnataka.

Over the past 50 years Mangalore has grown to be a world renowned center for professional education. It has got

the highest population to student ratio in India. Mangalore provides a congenial atmosphere to excel in

LibraryThe library is a treasure trove of books. Valuable books on various subjects relating to nursing, Medical Laboratory, Operation theatre techniques, X-ray techniques international business, Management, human resources and books on latest trends and research works are stocked. Latest periodicals and journals are also made available for reference.

SportsThe college provides adequate facilities for sports and games to encourage all-round development of the students.

Extra Curricular ActivitiesThe faculty strives for the multifaceted development of the students. They encourage them to take part in dramatics, quiz competitions, debating, music, dance and singing competition at collegiate and inter-collegiate levels.

Spoken English and English Fluency Classes are given on a continuous basis to upgrade speaking skills.

Leadership Development programmes are conducted to develop our students as competent leaders in their field of work.

HostelSeparate hostel facility for boys and girls is provided for outstation students, within walking distance of the college. The hostels are owned by the trust with a built up area of 30,000 sq.ft. spread over 22,000 sq.ft of land. They have comfortable rooms, adequate furniture and other amenities. A hygienic mess facility is made available on a sharing basis.

PlacementsThe college is confident that the students trained at COLACO will stand head and shoulders above the rest in any interview. It is the endeavour of the college to have a full fledged placement cell headed by a placement professor.

Care of FreshersThe faculty step in as caring mentors to make the freshers feel comfortable and safe in the college and hostel. As ragging is a non-bailable criminal offence care is taken to see that it does not occur and all students are counselled about the ill effects of ragging.

Teaching MethodologyThe teaching methodology includes the lecture method along with case studies, group discussions, syndicate sessions, role play, student presentations, management games, seminars, workshops and the use of audio visual aids, LCD, OHP etc. and field trips.

The timings are 9.30 A.M. - 4.00 P.M. (Monday – Friday) 9.30 A.M. - 12.30 Noon (Saturday)

It is situated at Kankanady in the heart of the picturesque city of Mangalore, with a built up area of 28,000 sq.ft. which

is fully owned by the trust. The railway station is at a distance of 2 kms from the college.

for admission.

2. A pass percentage of 45% in PUC/PDC/Intermediate/+2/Std XII or any other equivalent examination, in any discipline for GNM and science with Biology for B.Sc.
