Selection of theappropriate isolation material depends ondifferent factors, such as the speed of the trains, condition of the wheels/rails and type andthickness of the tunnel walls. Before determiningwhich isolation material is most appropriate,it is advisable to take vibration measurementswithin the ground to record the amplitude andfrequency to be isolated.Road, rail and tunnelconstructionRoad Construction Trackbed Construction Tunnel ConstructionKappWeg Building, Berlin5Road constructionFor planners and engineers, Regupol andRegufoam provide a safe method of isolatingroads and car-park decks.Regupol RAV200 was laid beneath the surfaceroads and pavements of Potsdamer Platz, toprevent the transfer of ground borne noise andvibration into a surrounding commercialdevelopment.Regupol RAV200 Potsdamer Platz, BerlinBridge constructionAn example of a simple method of vibrationisolation. In this application Regupol was bondedto concrete beams. The image shows a Regupol resilient bearingbeneath a concrete pedestrian walkway over abridge length of approximately 2.5 kilometres.Regupol resilient bearing Tay Road Bridge, ScotlandTunnel constructionBSW supplies special rubber tiles for verticalisolation between underground railway tunnelwalls and new buildings. At the KappWeg Building in Berlin, RAV300 wasinstalled to reduce structural noise near to anunderground railway.Regupol and Regufoam are also ideal forisolating floor slabs in railway or tram tunnels.Underground railway Regupol RAV3006The vibration isolation of buildings is a complextask. There are a range of different solutions, depending on the nature, intensity and sourceof vibration. When a building is being planned near toa railway line, underground infrastructure ortram line, the ground borne vibration mustbe measured by a registered acoustic/vibrationconsultant prior to planning. Based on thesemeasurements and the type of buildingconstruction, the isolation system canbe designed.Foundation isolationControlling vibration next to railway lines7Regupol RAV100 was selected to isolate theconcrete foundations of an eight-metre highpodium deck from ground borne vibrations ata new business, retail and residential district incentral London. To prevent train generated ground bornevibrations from entering into the main buildingstructure, the acoustic/vibration consultantspecified that the podium deck be isolated with ahigh performing anti-vibration material. This wascrucial in order to eliminate structural noise andpotential damage to the concrete foundationsfrom trains soon to operate on the new trackrunning directly beneath.A range of Regupol materials were laid beneatha motel, to prevent the ground borne noise andvibrations from a neighbouring mainline damagingthe building structure. The acoustic/vibration consultant specified thata natural frequency of 12Hz was required. As the building varied in its load distribution,it was necessary to use a combination ofRegupol systems that would ensure uniformityof performance and other technicalcharacteristics, such as deflection and creep. To achieve the specified performance, RegupolRAV100, Regupol RAV400 and Regupol RAV500were installed beneath the entire area of thebuilding, at a thickness of 34mm, 45mm and45mm respectively.Regupol RAV100Isolated building foundationsIsolating concrete foundationsFoundations cast onto RegupolPaddington CentralMotel One8In large buildings, there are many sources of noiseand vibration, each of which must be assessedindividually. Different isolation techniques arerequired according to where the source islocated the advice will vary depending on thesource of the problem, for example, whether it isa boiler on the first floor, or plant equipmentlocated on the roof.Equipment generating dynamic forces must alsobe considered very carefully. For mixed usedevelopments, floors should also be treated forimpact noise as this will be transmitted in alldirections through the entire structure of thebuilding. As there are many factors to considerwhen attenuating noise and vibration, it isrecommended that specialist advice be sought.Structural isolationMachine isolationStructural isolationDebi Tel Building, Berlin Isolated floor9Floating floorsIn this specialised field, Regupol or Regufoamcan be installed to reduce impact and structureborne noise in areas such as residential buildings, offices, leisure complexes, cinema auditoria andbowling alleys.Technical services and plant roomsTechnical service and plant rooms are isolatedagainst structure borne noise with Regupolor Regufoam using a simple plinth arrangement orcast foundation block.Such installations should always be designed in co-operation with structural engineers, as there areoften several parameters which can contribute tothe success or failure of vibration isolation.Mechanical plant isolationFloating floorA typical example of an isolated plinthRoof mounted equipment10Through its own dynamic forces, mechanicalequipment generates noise and vibration. This canresult in discomfort for the operative, and causedamage to the surrounding structure as well asthe equipment itself. Remedial action postinstallation can prove costly and time consuming. As such, anti-vibration precautions should beconsidered early on in a project.Regupol and Regufoamanti-vibration productscan be utilised to isolate noise and vibration atsource and offer specialist and bespoke solutions, whether isolating pumps or lining inertia blocks.High performing and with the ability to achievevery low natural frequencies, Regupol andRegufoamcan be designed for a wide spectrumof applications.Industrial applicationsEarly construction of an isolated inertia pit using RegupolCompleted inertia pit, fully isolatedIsolated inertia pit using RegufoamIsolation of a forging hammer11Regupol RAV300 was used to isolate newspaperprinting press foundations at one of the worldslargest and newest print-works. Foundationanti- vibration treatment was required to preventstructural vibration and to prolong the life of theprinting presses.700 linear metres of Regupol RAV300 wasinstalled around the foundation perimeter. This directly isolated five foundation blocks fromthe surrounding floor slab and supported a totalof ten newspaper printing presses.By reducing the passage of vibration into and outof the press foundations, the Regupol helped toprotect the offices and building structure fromexcessive structural noise, along with isolating thepress machinery from ground borne sources ofvibration and shock.CMS Vibration Solutions can offer a full technicalservice including bespoke solutions.
