The religious use of money was widespread in the Latin West. Such evidence is readily supported by numerous charters, accounts, legends of saints, sagas and archa-eological finds from the Middle Ages to modern times. In the medieval church, money provided a means for the soul‘s salvation, offering remission of sins, and being transmuted to church treasures for the glory of God. More than a hundred thousand coins discovered be-neath the floors of churches throughout Europe attest to such devotional use.
This international conference brings together specia-lists from all over Europe with contributions in English, French and German. It enables experts and others inte-rested in numismatics and the cultural history of money to address key aspects of this sociologically stimulating topic over a two day period.
