AN ARTIST’S MONUMENTAL VOYAGE. Emily Carr (1871-1945) was born in Victoria (British Columbia) and spent numerous years exploring the Pacific Northwest. Her travels of 1912 are considered the landmark voyage that inspired her to begin preserving British Columbia’s First Nations communities through her art. It was a life-long endeavour that produced an extraordinary body of work on the changing ways of life among these cultures, and created a new mythos of the Pacific wilderness through haunting portrayals of the landscape.

Today, Emily Carr is considered one of Canada’s most important contemporary artists.

LEGEND OF THE BIG DIPPER.The Big Dipper is arguably one of the most recognized star formations in the night sky and has inspired many First Nations legends. One of them describes how tracks of a giant bear were discovered circling a village. When the animals began disappearing from the forest, the elders asked that the bear be stopped before it brought starvation to the people. In response, three hunters set out to track the bear. They chased it across the Earth, right up into the sky!

The Quest is the first of four coins that tells the full story of the Bigger Dipper. It shows the hunters as they begin pursuing the great bear. In the background, the Big Dipper glows in the dark; a foreboding sign of the eternal hunt that is to come.

SHOWY AS ITALIAN THEATRE.The Harlequin duck is brightly coloured, just like Harlequin, the mad character in the traditional Italian commedia dell’arte. Males are slate blue with white, black and russet markings while females are a subdued brown for protection against predators.

This pretty little duck is about 30-50 cm long and weighs less than a kilogram. It’s a strong swimmer with a distinctive mouse-like call that has earned it the nickname “sea mouse.”

Despite its bright colours, the Harlequin duck is difficult to spot. It lives on the isolated, rocky shores of the Pacific and Atlantic coasts during the winter, and moves inland to breed in fast-moving freshwater streams in summer.
