This has resulted in rapid expansion of

the city’s population growth….

But there has been little

development in infrastructure

front….

► An airport that is congested

and needs much

development.

► A bustling railway station that

lacks many facilities.

► Nearly half a dozen bus

terminals scattered all over

the city.

► Narrow main roads are not

compatible for Bus Rapid

Transit System (BRTS)

Page 10: COIMBATORE MONO RAIL PROJECT

The vehicle growth in the city has been alarming

and the burden has been felt on the city roads….

4.7 lakh vehicles

presently

Projected - 10 lakh by

2020

Need for CART

Any city with a population of one million and

above should start thinking seriously of having

at least one or a combination of mass transport

systems.

And Coimbatore is no exception with its urban

population at 2.15 million.

Page 12: COIMBATORE MONO RAIL PROJECT

Even cities with far less population than

Coimbatore in neighboring Kerala are

getting these projects….

The need for rail based transit

system….

● Rail based mass transit systems are more efficient, fast

moving, eco friendly and have greater carrying capacity

than road based systems.

● Finally, it has been found that a Mono rail system will best

suit the tex city given its congested and narrow roads.

● This will be followed by suburban rail system to all

neighbouring towns.

Page 16: COIMBATORE MONO RAIL PROJECT

(CART) THE MONORAIL PROJECT

Page 17: COIMBATORE MONO RAIL PROJECT

The Monorail Technology….

● The monorail system runs

on a horizontal beam.

● The system propels by

electric motors.

● The system can be

automatic or driver operated.

● System is compact and

suitable for growing cities

like Kovai.

17

Page 18: COIMBATORE MONO RAIL PROJECT

The advantages of Monorail….

● Easy to implement and

cost effective than Metro.

● Won’t consume much

space on the road and can

be built on road medians.

● Won’t disturb traffic during

construction as it can be

pre fabricated and erected

on site.

18

Page 19: COIMBATORE MONO RAIL PROJECT

Benefits of Monorail….

● Reduction in road traffic

and less time consuming

for commuters.

● Reduction in fuel

consumption (vehicle

operating cost) and less

pollution levels.

● Reduction in accidents and

lower maintenance costs.

Linear and Circular systems

►There will be both linear system as well as a couple of

circular loop systems for the proposed Monorail system.

►The linear line will have dual carriage facility or double

beam structure while the loop lines will have single beam

carriage way, thus facilitating a circular loop.

►The lines will overlap and there will be interchanges with

other lines and rapid transit lines.

20

Page 21: COIMBATORE MONO RAIL PROJECT

The routes….

►The East West Corridor – from Airport to

TNAU through the city which will be a dual

way linear corridor.

►Loop 1 – Northern Circular Loop

►Loop 2 – Southern Circular Loop
