Brief 2 - Cognosco Type Design

Overview

Brief

Design the a sans serif typeface developed from initial drawings and

developed investigating the releationship between characters. Propose

the distribution of the typeface, how it would be advertised and distributed

as a font.

Concept

The humanist typeface based on drawings was named Cognosco which

is a latin term for 'I learn', 'I know' or 'I recognise'. The name was given

as it was the last project in a degree and acted as a learning process for

constructing rules and consistancy within typography.

SpecifcationsandSizing

Design

Examples of the type functioning at different pt sizes, the letters are also

shown how they relate to one another with shapes determining 'letter sets'

and rules across the typeface.

The letters have been developed through drawing and v ector artwork

and are designed to work as a collection of letterforms which reect the

anatomy of one another.

Spec Book

Design Concept

A specication book has been produced as a sample and referance book

for the typeface. The book would be available to order from the website as

merchandise. It would also be given out at typographic events as a special

edition monograph.

Advertising

Design Concept

Adverts for the typeface in Computer Arts magazine, the adverts would direct the

reader to the website where the typeface is available for download. Each weight

of the typeface has a separate advertisment in which the weight of the typeface is

subtley reected within the positioning of the letter, the lightest oating and the bold

sinking.

Each of the weights has its own colour which is applied to the range of products

which that weight spans across, posters, adverts and merchandise.

Posters

Design Concept

Set of prints available from the website as merchandise for the typeface,

the rst editions of the posters would b e given out at specialist typography

trade fairs or events such as TYPO London.

Prints are delivered by mail in a tube and feature stickers on either end

with the relevent sticker to the poster, Bold poster would have a 'B' sticker.

Design Concept

As typeface distribution is becoming a web based activity with font

foundarys and font distributors selling typefaces, Cognosco needed its own

method of online distribution. Away from large sub-sellers such as My-

Fonts, where typefaces can be overlooked because of the sheer quantity,

the Cognosco website is completely self contained.

Minimal aesthetics letting the viewer navigate the website and test out the

font in the Test Space, the website also contains a Cartel site with all the

prints available to buy.
