Page 6: Cognis Sizes

Spin finishes:High-performance chemicals formaximum process reliabilityUncontrolled friction and heat are the naturalenemies of every synthetic fiber. In yarn pro-duction and processing, spin finish formulationsfrom Cognis ensure perfect cohesion of the sensitive filaments and wrap every yarn reliablyaround the bobbin.

No doubt about it: Synthetic fibers aregaining ground in modern textiles. Thefact that polyamide, polyester and thelike display many of the advantages of natural fibers – and quite a few morebesides – is also attributable to high-performance spin finishes. They ensurethat engineering polyester yarns willnot break, even under extreme loads. And they give fine nylon yarns thesmoothness they need for high-speedprocessing into elastic hosiery.

We design our spin finish formulationsto have precisely the right properties for each processing step. Whether fortexturizing, drawing or twisting, our spin finishes will deliver exactly whatyou need. Their sliding capability can be tailored to suit requirements, super-smooth or moderately smooth.

Either absolutely thermally stable, orvolatile without leaving residues.Youryarns will thus turn out as resistant andstrong, as voluminous, elastic or finethat the quality of the end product andthe process itself will never hang upon a thread.

This precision is possible because ourchemists have in-depth knowledge of the materials, the machines and theprocesses. With this competence, we can develop perfectly tuned high-performance products for optimalresults in any processing environment.

Best in class for high performanceHow does the industry judge us? In termsof emulsifying capability or solubility, ourproducts come out top of the class. Thesame goes for their wetting properties, film building on the fiber surface, andthread adhesion. Fiber manufacturersaround the world appreciate the reliabilityof our spin finishes:Yarn cohesion withoutstickiness, no chemical reaction with the yarn, and no aggressive effects onmetals, paints or materials. Easy handling, high storage stability and good wash-out characteristics are all part of thepackage with Cognis products. And sincewe care about people and the environ-ment, we have developed chemicalsolutions that make a substantial con-tribution to minimizing health risks andthe burden on wastewater.

Precise knowledge of the processes involvedallows us to developoptimally adapted high-performance products.

ILX®: The new formula for just-in-time mixing

You want improved efficiency and process reliability.Where conventional production methods set limits to achieving these goals, the patented ILX® In-line Mixer opens up new horizons.

This Cognis innovation optimizes mixing and application of textilechemicals and makes previously labor-intensive processes easier, faster, safer and less expensive. Just-in-time mixing slashes high freight costsand long storage of large volumes. It eliminates the need for extensivequality controls for batch-produced emulsions. The programmingoptions are many and varied; all production data is permanentlyaccessible. Once stored, formulations can be reproduced at any time. The In-line Mixer also offers the possibility of customized multi-streamconfigurations and networking with external systems. Knowledge of food and pharmaceuticals processes was channeled into thedevelopment of the In-line Mixer to facilitate production of especiallyfine and stable emulsions. This results in mixes with higher homo-geneity and reproducibility.

Tailor-made solutionsNo matter what technology you use andwhat fiber grades you produce, we knowthe tasks involved and provide matchingsolutions that help you too to meet themost stringent of customer demands. We make your challenges our own andoptimize our spin finish formulationsprecisely to meet your requirementsprofile. We have our finger on the pulseof technical progress. Increasingly highproduction speeds demand increasinglyhigh performance from processing aids. Our experts look beyond their testtubes: Inter-disciplinary research is amatter of course at Cognis. We maintaina permanent dialogue with leadingmachine manufacturers.

Page 8: Cognis Sizes

All processes firmly under control:Ideal formulations for exceptional price/performance ratiosSpinning staple fibers to yarn is not such a fairy-taletask as spinning straw to gold. Nonetheless, there are clear parallels: Secondary spinning, too, involves a certain transformation and an unlocking of secrets. In both cases the challenge is a tough one, and thedegree of success can be measured in hard currencyin the yarn produced.

Transforming staple fibers only a centi-meter long into kilometers of spun yarninvolves many complex processes.Different and special fiber lubricants arerequired for worsted or semi-worstedcombing and carding processes. Nomatter what technology is used, oursofteners, lubricants, coning, twistingand beaming oils do a perfect job. Theyensure that the fiber will not be damagedor even break due to excessive friction. They prevent individual filaments emerg-ing from the bundle and dropping off, which would result in a poorer yield. And they keep unavoidable electrostaticcharging within acceptable limits.

To find the optimal chemical solutionsfor you, Cognis Texperts closely studythe physics and mechanics involved, particularly that of fiber friction and howto measure it. Our research team usesadvanced analysis techniques and instru-mentation to test all developments forfield compatibility. Even for conflictingrequirements, we can solve the problemwith a tailor-made formulation.

We go to great lengths to ensure that youcan get the best out of your processes. Inother words, more reliable production, less fiber loss overall. Our lubricants area key to higher profitability.

Environmentally kind solutions forevery processWe offer you optimal processing aids foreach type of raw material, from cottonthrough polyester to silk, and wool tocashmere. For each specific application. And in any desired form – emulsions, solutions, or pure oils.

Wherever possible, we use oleochemicalbase materials from natural sources. It isno coincidence that Cognis productslike Selbana® lead the field. They excelnot only in terms of outstanding perfor-mance, but also due to their optimalcompatibility for humans and the envi-ronment.

Know-how for optimal effectivenessAre your production processes really asefficient as they could be? If you arelooking for ways of making your pro-duction more economical with addedbenefits, we are the ideal partner foryou. Check out our competency in con-sulting. From the formulation, throughits application, to process control, Cog-nis Texperts are highly qualified textilespecialists who know both your require-ments and those of the market.

You can rely on our products, our world-wide Cognis service, and our compre-hensive consultancy skills to help yousignificantly reduce material losses andproduction downtimes and to achievemeasurably more efficient operation.

From the freshly shorn fleece to the clean yarn, something will be lost on the way. Exactly how much, depends to a great extent on the quality of the processing aids.

The profitability of the spinning process stands and falls with the optimal preparation of the raw fibers. This is where state-of-the-art solutions from Cognis are pushing back frontiers. Since the spinning processwith its many steps poses especially high demands, the wool requires multiple treatments – to adjust itsdynamic and static friction properties, to smoothe it, and to render it antistatic. Effective lubricating beforecarding and combing of the raw wool, softening before spinning of the combed tops requires processingaids that guarantee high quality of the end products and keep fiber losses to a minimum. Our answer:Selbana® and Belfasin®.These combing/carding oils, lubricants and softeners will help you to get the bestpossible yield out of the raw material. In cooperation with renowned wool research institutes, we arecurrently working on improving raw material yield by a further half percent. As anyone will recognize –and who better than you – this is a real milestone when one considers the savings and benefits achieved.

Wool, a valuable commodity –Every fraction counts

Page 10: Cognis Sizes

Optimal raw material combinations formaximum effectiveness – an insuranceagainst downtimes and production lossesWarp yarns often only become weavable whenthey are properly sized. We design optimal sizeformulations for our customers to ensure thathigh-speed weaving machines do what theyshould – function trouble-free, 24 hours a day, with well over 90 percent availability … or evena little more.

Machine stoppage is just one, thoughperhaps the most inconvenient, kind oftrouble. Other aspects include effectiveprevention of sloughing, pilling, lintingand yarn breakage to achieve the high-est possible quality weaving. Where upto 10,000 tautly strung warp yarns flickup and down at breathtaking speed tolet the weft yarns through, a blink of aneye can be a small eternity – and resist-ance to friction is an absolute must.In weaving, everything hinges on thequality of the size: The more resistantand smooth the film that protects theyarns from rubbing and splitting, thefewer production stoppages there will be.

How do Cognis products do their job sowell? We pull out all the stops in formu-lating sizes. Among all the available size

raw materials we will mix the optimalcombination for your specific application. With decades of experience and ourtechnological know-how to back us, wehave secured a leading position in theworld market.Your partnership withCognis is virtually synonymous with aninsurance against stoppages.

Three good reasons for choosing CognisFirst, we select our raw materials fromall possible classes to design the most aptsolution for the requirements: Naturaloils and fats for the sizing bath and aslubricants/rewaxing agents; syntheticoils and polymers for cold sizing; starch, galactomannan and cellulose deriva-tives, PVA and copolymers as staple fibersizes; and PES resins for filament sizing.

Your benefits• All size raw materials

from a single source

• Unbeatable formulatingknow-how

• In-depth knowledge ofmachine technologies

• Applications technologyknow-how

• Product solutions for all environmental andwastewater needs

• 24-hour service world-wide

Our products• Starch derivatives:

• Carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC):Horsil®

• Galactomannan:Molvenin®

• Polyvinyl alcohols (PVA):Inex®

• Product mixes:Fibrocol®, Fibrotex®,Fibropur®, Fibrosint®,Filasint®

• Sizing waxes, warplubricants and cold sizes:Avirol®

Second, we have by far the most variedproduct portfolio in the world: Quellax®,Inex®, Horsil®, Fibrocol®, Fibropur®,Fibrosint®, Fibrotex®, Filasint® are well-known brands in the Cognis sizes range.Avirol® gives the sizing film its supple-ness, Molvenin® is just as environmen-tally benign as starch but technically farsuperior.

Third, we can draw on solid experiencewith all technological systems. Flyshot, rapier or projectile/gripper shuttleweaving technologies, waterjet, airjet orthe new multi-phase technology – youname it, we can handle it.

With such a wide variety of technicalsystems on the one hand and some 20raw materials on the other, the combi-nation options are endless.

Cognis sizes provide yarns with

effective protectionfrom abrasion.

Conventional starch-based sizes often do not perform sufficiently well for maximumweavability of the yarn. Special applications need more effective products.

The problem is that, though CMC and synthetic sizes made of petro-chemical raw materials such as PVA and copolymers are suitably power-ful, they are difficult to reconcile with current wastewater legislation.Galactomannans on the other hand, extracted from the seedpods of tropical and subtropical plants like cassia or guar, are 100% environ-mentally compatible.

Cognis offers galactomannan derivatives under its Molvenin® brand. This natural-source product ensures high weaving effectiveness, is compatible with alkalis, mixesexcellently with other sizes, and washes out easily even at low temperatures. Based on renewable raw materials and readily biodegradable, Molvenin® is the No.1 eco-size.

As Cognis, our competence is a cleardifferentiator in the market: We willalways find the best solution for you.

Economical solutions are not a matterof product price, but rather a questionof benefit and heightened efficiency. The arithmetic is simple: If you can raisethe availability of your looms by just onepercent through utilizing an optimizedsize, the actual cost of the product palesinto insignificance. Our Texperts will behappy to present you with detailedcalculations – and support you at anytime with comprehensive advice onapplications.

Making a clean job of it – the gentle wayThe pretreatment of yarns and fabrics prior to dyeing is a science in itself – just as excitingand complex as the alchemy of old. But, thedifference between now and then is that wecan precisely calculate the results every time. And unlike our medieval counterparts, wemake no secret of what our science can do.

Before a fiber will take a dye, everythingin it has to come out – all the naturalsoiling and all the upstream processingaids, such as finishes, lubricants andsizes. Nothing goes without chemicals.Surfactants to wash out water-solubleand emulsifiable substances. Persulfateor enzymes to degrade starch. Alkalis tobind soil, make it dispersable and emul-sifiable. Hydrogen peroxide to removediscolorations. For optimal metering, control and process-linking of the indi-vidual pretreatment stages, we are yourideal partner. Make the most of ourcomprehensive understanding of theprocesses, excellent laboratory skills andengineering knowledge about themachinery and equipment, materials, and the possible error sources.

A whole spectrum of specialtiesWhether the process is continuous ordiscontinuous, irrespective of the make-up, we will define the optimal combina-tion of auxiliaries and agents for optimalresults. Minimum stressing of materialsand minimum wastewater loading arethe special features of our products.Biodegradable substances come firstevery time.

In everythingwe do, efficiency is the watchword –that includes increasing capacity andproductivity by speeding up processes.

You know the problem: Conventional cotton pretreatment methods result in silicate deposits in machines and on textiles. The result? Costly and annoying stoppages for cleaning. What you maybe didn’t yet know is that Cognis’ Seclarin® method does away with this problem altogether.

In both continuous and discontinuous boiling-off and bleaching, Cottoclarin® and Securon® are an unbeatable product team. They keep high-molecular soiling substances and the silicate stabilizersoluble during the entire process, thus preventing deposits. Once dissolved, soiling will not re-attachitself to the materials. The Seclarin® method ensures that decomposition products will be transportedout, while preventing agglomeration.

Silicate aggregation or crystallization on the fiber or the equipment is ruled out. Instead of crystallineprecipitation, amorphous compounds are formed, which can be easily rinsed off.

Cost-saving and effective bleach stabilization

Brilliant results: Dyeing auxiliaries for dazzling quality and shining marketopportunitiesColors change as quick as fashion. But theirbrilliance and fastness must never change.Besides the right dyes, the optimum dyeingauxiliaries are paramount. No need for you to experiment; we’ve done that for you.

The process requirements in dyeing arecountless. Practically every fiber needsits own dye system and consequentlyneeds a systematic combination ofchemicals with differently adjustedparameters such as pH, temperatureprofile, time, etc., for dyeing. And that’snot all: Depending on the fiber grade, the various and fundamentally differentprocesses also require completely differ-ent machinery.

Through this kaleidoscopic array, we see clearly for you. Cognis offers theappropriate system for each dyeingprocess, tuned to your specific machinetechnology. With competent advice andsolution-oriented service, we help youto obtain results that will meet marketneeds and improve your competitiveness.

Denim is an absolutely special case in dyeing. And not just because only thewarp yarn is dyed instead of the entire fabric. Or because indigo, being insolublein water, presents a tough problem that can only be cracked with care and ingenuity. But above all else, becausefashion is such a crazy thing.

After you have finally succeeded in forcing the dye into the fiber in six succes-sive processes, using a multitude of tricks on the way, you then have to extract itagain. At least, partially. To achieve the mandatory wash-out look.

This is where Cognis offers an exclusive new, enzyme-based technology. Perpetualprewashing – until the blue in the garments has faded to the desired degree of light-ness – is out, just as is the stone-washing process.

Enzymes do the job better in every way. However, besides enzymes the process does requirespecial softeners and smoothing agents. And it takes special expertise to apply these. Cognisis fully in touch with this technology. Don’t let fashion quirks drive you crazy; rely on ourknowledge and our products.

When dyeing elastane fiber mixes,Breviol® helps you achieve streak-free,even results without damaging thefibers. Our running crease inhibitors doan excellent job in all machines and onall types of fiber. With Breviol®, you canrun even sensitive fabrics trouble-freeon winch backs or jets.

Wool – a problem child: High tempera-tures and the use of acids in wool dyeingnormally result in wool weight loss dueto leaching out of proteins. The woolloses its luster, its natural character, itsstability and elasticity. With proteinproducts like our wool protecting agentBreviol® WSM, you can restore lost pro-teins and prevent quality losses.

Even with sensitivefabrics you can obtainuniform results in jetdyeing.

One principle, a host of right solutions:Printing chemistry formulated to a TJust as cuts, shapes and colors change with thetimes, so do print designs. But one thing willnever change: the challenge of getting colorsharmoniously and permanently onto the fabric.Irrespective of the printing technique and type, nothing goes without printing thickeners. And that is where we come in.

Flat screen, rotary screen, transfer or jetprinting – no matter what the tech-nique, printing chemistry always followsthe same basic principle. The dyes arebound in a carrier substance, thenapplied to the fabric. Cognis possessesextensive know-how in conditioning, preparing and applying these carriermaterials. Whether you need thickenersfor printing pastes in additive processessuch as pigment, reactive, direct andresist printing, or reductants for the sub-tractive discharge process, we formulatethem all to a T.

Acrylates, alginates, guar & Co.Synthetic or natural? Even if there’s nogetting around acrylates in pigmentprinting, wherever possible we preferen-tially select products derived from nat-ural raw materials. With an eye toachieving the best possible results, these will be alginates for printing oncotton and other cellulose fibers. Forwool and silk, on the other hand, sub-stances based on guar meet the mostexacting demands.

Goodbye to harsh times, thanks to softenersSofteners occupy a special place among textilefinishing products. Even more than convenience, the prime concern is processability. Belfasin®keeps your processes running smoothly, rightthrough to the making up stage.

What do you think of when you hear the term softening? A softener for afluffy pullover, a hydrophilic softener fora towel, a non-yellowing softener forwhite underwear? We do too. But along-side the product properties, we alsofocus on how the products will processin the textile production chain. Weavingand knitting processes are continuouslyspeeding up, making ever-greaterdemands on the yarns used.

We develop softeners that not only fulfiltheir primary objective, but also act assmoothing agents and antistatics. Thename? Belfasin®. Applicability? All make-up forms, all application methods.

Co-development of productsWhat makes Belfasin® processing aidsstand out is their design concept. Theyensure that the treated yarns will slidethrough the machines at constanttension. This results in more regularlyworked goods, fewer machine stop-pages, and greater production efficiency. No matter what kind of yarn youprocess – synthetic fibers, cotton, woolor their mixes – you will be sure to find a suitable product in the Cognis range.

The making-up stage also requires in-creasingly effective softeners. Particular-ly with knitted goods, where sewingspeeds are rising so fast that processingreliability is essential. Products from theBelfasin® range improve the touch, whileprotecting the textiles from damage.

Applications technology know-how, eco-logical and toxicological competencehave made us the number one producerand marketer of textile softeners.

Decades of experience have gone in tothe development of a range of productsthat meet even the most exacting marketneeds.

What’s more: Customizing products tomeet your needs is all part of the agenda.

Cognis softeners allow high-speedsewing while enhancing processingreliability.

Fashion textiles in particular have to feel full and soft and need an elegant, smooth touch.

But a smooth product is often of crucial importance in processing too. In knitting, the yarn must slide through the machine evenly and at constant tension. This is the only way to achieve the regular appearance that consumers want in a fabric. A smooth surface is also essential in the making-up of fine woven or knitted textiles for easier sewing with-out any loop damage. This considerably improves the appearance of the material. Theseenhancements can be achieved with our smoothing softeners Belfasin®, Adasil® andAdalin®. Your benefits: A considerably reduced risk of downgradings, and minimized costs. Our Texperts can tell you how.
