Things to know for Freshmen…• House Bill 5:We have new graduation requirements under House Bill 5. You will learn more about this and the impact that it has on your freshman during our November 3rd “4 Year Plan Kick Off Parent Meeting”. This meeting will set the stage for planning your student’s next 3 years.

• Freshmen InitiativeOur goal has been to work together to support the freshmen class. We have been doing this by:-meeting with freshmen individually regarding grades-the freshmen team has been holding weekly meetings with freshmen-creating a mentoring program to help freshmen that are struggling academically

Grades 10-12**Still on Recommended/Distinguished Graduation Plans.

STAAR/EOC• All students must pass English 1, English 2, Algebra 1, Biology

and US History. Several retest opportunities throughout the year.

PSAT• NISD pays for all students to take in grades 9-11. 11th grade is

the important year for National Merit. Results in Dec-Jan.

SAT/ACT• It is recommended that students take the SAT/ACT in the Spring

of their Junior year.• District is paying for Juniors to take the ACT in the Spring.

Grades 10-12Dual Credit• Can take in 11-12 grade.• May take two courses per semester.• Counts as high school credit and college credit.• Offered through NCTC at junior college price.• Must have a 3.0 GPA and pass TSI to qualify.• Does require early planning/registration.• Depending on numbers, could either be face to face or online.• Will have an informational meeting in the Spring

What’s the difference between dual credit and AP?• As of now, AP is weighted more than dual credit for GPA.• AP credit depends on your test score and the college you attend.• Dual credit hours may not be accepted at private or out of state

universities.
