This is what I have learned: The water has been tested, and it is neither sewage from the sewer lines on the south side of the historic church nor potable water from the 16- inch water main that passes directly under the sidewalk in front of that building. The water actually comes from an underground spring. The water flow is usually experienced during the winter months, our wet season. The amount of water was minimal during our recent drought years but we have experienced rainfall 40% above normal over the last 15 months, and the result is evident. You can also see evidence of this underground water by standing over the drain in the lower parking lot in front of the church. There the water flows like a mountain stream, demonstrating the sheer quantity of water that concerns us. We are working with Catholic Construction Services, Inc. and a hydraulic engineer to review the site and propose some options. Obviously, the presence of a stream directly beneath it complicates plans for the future renovation of the historic church building. I will keep you informed as the studies continue. Dear friends in the Risen Lord,

Springs of water, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever. (Daniel 3:77)

I’m sure almost everyone has noticed the water that trickles and pools in front of the historic church and at other places in the church parking lot, causing some damage to the asphalt pavement. I have been asked about it many times since my arrival at IHM eleven months ago, and I have been concerned about it myself, especially during freezing weather, when the resulting ice creates a considerable slip hazard. This is what I have learned: The water has been tested, and it is neither sewage from the sewer lines on the south side of the historic church nor potable water from the 16-inch water main that passes directly under the sidewalk in front of that building. In the meantime, please know that your parish staff are “on it,” with the safety of everyone who worships, studies or works here our number one priority. Happy Easter still!
