Blur – Coffee and TV
A music video I have looked into
is Blur’s Coffee and TV. I have
looked into the music video
because it has been an influence
to our own considering the
creativity, the animation aspect
and the narrative.
Our group took influence due to
similarities of the two. We wish to
have a fun narrative that will
capture the audiences attention
and so I feel like looking into this
music video is a good idea.
Coffee and TV follows a narrative of a little milk cartoon
on his journey through a town in order to find the missing
boy and bring him home. On his travels he manages to
fall in love and find the missing man. I really like the fact
that it has a narrative because it draws in the audience
and you want to keep on watching to see what happens in
the end. The fact that our music video has a narrative is
what kind of relates the two and makes them similar. Our
narrative follows the Plasticine men on the journey of how
they got to the poster and how they attempted to become
the real four band members of tonic. What helps us
understand what is going on in the Blur Music Video is the
help of the Mise-en-scene. An example of this is at the
very beginning of the music video we see numerous
missing posters of a boy plus with the glum expressions
the family are pulling we get a clear view that someone is
missing so when the milk cartoon leaves we have a rough
idea why and where he is going. This is something we
need to consider, how will we make the narrative clear
enough for the audience to understand?
Goodwin
Throughout the Coffee and TV Music Video
Goodwin’s theory has been applied. My first
example is the link between lyrics and visuals.
The lyrics are sung ‘Take me away’ whilst the milk
cartoon climbs onto the back of a motor cycle and
is literally driven away. The main focus of the
Music video is for milk to find the missing man but
a short scene of the band playing is also added.
This helps Goodwin’s theory and is another way
of applying it to the Music Video. It meets the
demands of the record label as by showing the
band it helps sell their image another thing it does
is represent the indie genre as having a live
performance is a common genre convention.
As far as it goes to presenting Goodwin’s theory
in our Music Video we have created a narrative to
follow, we wish to have a live band performance
at the end and we will also have lyric to visual
links. We will also attempt to fit other aspects of
the theory in.
