Panther Pride!
Counselor’s Corner By Ms. Kramer
Frustrated parents sometimes ask, “How can I get my kids to help around the house?” Doing chores
around the house is very important because this can carry over to school success in the classroom. All
people have a need to belong and kids are no different. Doing chores can help children know they are
contributing members of the family. And being a contributing family member can fill the basic need to
belong. Parent should not have to pay, argue, or remind their children to do their chores.
Children who learn to do chores and have responsibilities at home are more likely to transfer that habit
and the skills they have learned to the classroom environment. When they fail to complete their chores,
children learn there is a consequence. Failure to complete school work and
homework also have consequences.
Love and Logic suggests that parents try making the following changes:
Once in a while try to catch your children working hard to complete their
chores and offer to help them. This works only if the child is working harder
than you are. Provide for them reasonable deadlines, such as “Just have it
done before supper.” If they don’t do their chores go ahead and do them for
them. Then when it is time for them to do something they want to do, remind
them that that will be possible as soon as they repay you for the time you spent doing their chores. Maybe they will have to stay home instead of being
driven somewhere. Most likely next time they will learn a valuable lesson.
Cody School is lucky to have RSVP volunteers come and
help our students with reading skills. Because of a grant re-ceived by RSVP each 4th and 5th Grade Student received 4 books as a gift just before the
Holiday break.

Change for the Marquez Family
Just before Christmas the Marquez family home was destroyed by a fire. Marquez’s were part of the Cody family before their children moved on to upper grades. We’re asking for donations of your loose change to help them with their loss. There is an aquarium by the office that we are try-ing to fill with coins to give the family a little help at a difficult time. Please send your spare change to add to the tank. Thank you!

2nd Grade
Math Minute
January math practice will consist
of sorting and grouping items,
along with discussing and compar-
ing plane (flat) and solid (3-D)
shapes. Continue to work with
your little one on memorizing addi-
tion and subtraction with answers
to 10. We will formally assess add-
ing and subtracting in the 4th quar-
ter of school.
REMINDERS:
-No School for students on
the 19th of this month.
-Book Club orders due on the
22nd this month.
-Reading assessments will be
given to students on the week
of the 12th. Getting to bed
early and eating a healthy
breakfast can help your child
perform their best.
The New Year Brings a New
Subject to First Grade
Starting in January, boys and girls will begin their study of science with Mrs. Thompson twice a week. They will be studying proper-ties of matter. This will include solids and liquids, and how each react to movement, mixing, rolling, stacking and so on. While one class will be working with Mrs. Thomp-son, the other will be continuing their study of social science and literature with Mrs. Gribble. Be sure to ask your child what they are learning in each room. We are sure that they will be excited about these opportuni-ties to explore further, these areas of study.
We are halfway through the school year and the Reading is Cool sheets are add-ing up. To be on track for completing 10 sheets by the year’s end, your child should have at least 5 sheets completed. Don’t wait until the end of the year to work on this goal with them. Children who are growing into good readers benefit from routine practice of reading at home throughout the year.
Rocket Math Subtraction will begin in January. Help your child to memorize subtraction facts at home so that they can soar.
The 1st Grade Gazette
Third Graders this month completed their Fire Safety Unit.
The students learned how to “inspect” their homes to check for fire hazards;
learned what to if there was a fire in their homes; drew a fire escape plan;
and went through the Fire Department Fire House. Each student received a
certificate for learning the material presented in the unit. For math, stu-
dents will be learning their multipli-
cation facts/fact families, working
on multiplication word problems
and learn how to skip count. Stu-
dents will begin their next unit in
Science this month on Rocks and
Minerals. Students will begin the
unit by discussing the three rock
classifications. Students will ob-
serve how rocks are the same and
different and also observe minerals
in rocks. Our study of rocks will
continue the remainder of the quarter. Students have new 3rd quarter AR
goals and will continue to work on their independent reading levels. We will
also be reviewing our 6 traits this month and complete narrative writings.
Fourth Graders have been trying out a new form of tech-
nology in the classroom. We have been podcasting with McDonald School 4th graders through the Skype program. We recently con-nected with them over the internet for interviews. Each child intro-duced themselves with a few facts which gave others the opportunity to learn a little about
us. Within the next week we will be sharing our Social Studies marketing projects with our new pals using the web camera. The stu-dents are very excited about Skyping with another school. It gives them a chance to share ideas with others. In the future we hope to become more advanced and take our webcasting further.
Fifth Graders have been working on land and
water models in science. We've been able to get our hands
dirty as we investigated how sediments mix together in our Earth's crust. Other concepts that we experimented with were how streams are formed and how they weather and
erode through our landscape. Fifth graders also made a model of the water cycle in their science teams. Be sure to
ask your fifth grader how to sing, The Water Cycle Boogy!
5th Graders Attend Leadership Conference
On Thursday, January 8, 2009, Tanner Haws, Makenzie Lienemann, Mavigliano, Mason Amweg,
Rylie Cotton, Callie Davidson, Mitch Parish, and Halle Pflughaupt represented Cody school at the Elementary Leadership Conference at Mid-Plains
Community College. There were 134 students from 17 schools registered for this year’s confer-
ence. Cody’s leaders were chosen from input from peers, teachers, counselor, and principal. Students were divided into 6 groups and had an opportunity to meet
students from other schools who also demonstrate positive leadership qualities.
Students were able to attend six sessions with their group and learn about the fol-lowing topics; Neil Hokanson , leadership podcast project; Denise DiGiovanni ,
Digital Citizenship; Margaret Ziegler and Kara Dike,Standing up to Peer Pressure: “How to say NO without losing your friends”; Michael Davis, Characteristics of Great Leaders; Deanna L. Peterson, Self-Leadership: Leading yourself to Excellence;
Jenee Hill and Monica Kramer, Leaders Don’t Tolerate Bullying.”
Students were treated to pizza and pop for lunch
and enjoyed participating in a dance activity with Becky Wagner following lunch. In the afternoon
students convened in the auditorium to listen to community leaders lead a panel discussion. Members of the panel included Mrs. Molly O’Hol-
leran, Mr. Ernie Mehl, Dr. David Engle, and Dr.
Midge Mougey.
We can all be proud of the great leadership of our
Cody students.
