EXPLANATION
This codebook pertains to a dataset containing information
on 6,302 individuals who occupied political office on the national
level in Mexico at any time between 1900 and 1971.
Variables in this dataset have been transformed (or borrowed)
from a "raw" dataset with variable record-lengths. This transformed
dataset has even (uniform) record-lengths; there are four (4) card-
images for each observation , and the total number of card-images
is 25,208 (since 6,302 x 4 = 25,208).
A full explanation of the population, and of the data-
gathering process, appears in the Introductory Notes of the codebook
for
are
but
the raw dataset. Some appendices from the raw-dataset codebook
reproduced here for easy reference (hence the double pagination),
for a full understandinq of the variables in this transformed- -
dataset fi& essential& become familiar with the codebook foe t&
raw dataset as well.
Researchers interested in individual office-holders may
also consult a document entitled "Identification Numbers and
Personal Names for Individuals Included in the Dataset on Political
Elites in Mexico, 1gOO-1971.n

Due to minor (and infrequent) errors in coding or keypunching, somevariables in this transformed dataset contain stray values; allowancefor this should be made in progrsmming.

APPENDIX III. MEMORANJXIM ON URBAN-RURAL COMMUNITY SCALE
The purpose of this variable is to provide a means of finding outwhether members of the Mexican political elite have tended to come fromrelatively rural or urban areas. To obtain the five-point scale incard type 2, column 27 I utilized the list of communities in: Departamentode la Estadistica National, Resiimen de1 censo aenerai de habitantes de 30de noviembre de 1921 (Mexico: Talleres Grdficos de la Naci6n, 1928), pp.166-182. I set up the following scheme:

aThe actual range of this category is from 50,000 to 143,376.
416xico, D,F. -- excluding nearby communities which might be properly con-sidered au part of the larger metropolitan area.
.'Figures do not add up to 100 because of rounding.
This scale is only an approximation, and involves a number ofassumptions:
1. that the much-criticized census of 1921, selected because of itsavailability and its central point in time, provides a reasonably accurateindication of relative community size;
2. that the relative position of individual communities on an urban-rural scale would not change significantly over time;
3. that the proper unit for analysis is the city or village (localidad)rather than the municipio, though not much practical difference is involved;
4. that the established categories, which leave the vast majority ofthe Mexican population in "rural" areas, are appropriate.
I adopted absolute thresholds (rather than dividing communities intoquartiles or quintiles)since my intention has been to focus on the environmentalcontext of personal and political socialization.

APPENDIX IV. CODE FOR OCCUPATIONS
-
The diversity and range of occupations in Mexico has made it diffi-cult to construct a comprehensive and consistent code. For analyticalpurposes I have tried to take full advantage of options available in athree-column format. The first column generally serves to indicate eco-nomic sector. The second column provides a loose and impressionisticindication of socioeconomic "status" for the occupation involved, ex-cluding military and professional pursuits. The third digit makes itpossible to identify jobs with considerable precision.
