Grade 5/6 Home Learning Term 4 Week 1 Maths Focus This term we will be learning about immigration to Australia. You will be connecting the wonderful world of maths to Australian immigration. Maths Investigations: Compete Task 1 and any part of Task 2 that you are interested in. 1.Make a time line of your families’ immigration to Australia, that includes, names, dates and key locations. 2.Find out about the current population in one or some of the capital cities. For eg Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Darwin, Perth, Brisbane, Hobart, Gold Coast, Newcastle ect. You could investigate: -How many people live there? -How can you explain the different numbers? -What backgrounds do they have? -Where and how did people come from to settle there? -What maths can you find out about the weather? -Which city has the biggest concentration of people from a particular background? (Eg Italian, Greek, Serbian, Chinese) *What maths can you discover? Percentages, fractions, decimals? How can you display it? Graphs, grids…map Can you make comparisons between different places? Can you make predictions about population growth in Melbourne? Remember to try to find as much maths as you can and be ready to present your most interesting information to the class.
