“Showmethemannerinwhichanation or country care for its dead, and I will measurewithmathematicalexactness the tender sympathies of its people, their respect for the laws of the land and their loyalty to high ideals.”
William Gladstone 1809 – 1898
Welcome to the Coburg Cemetery Heritage WalkCemeteries are an important part of our culture and our heritage.Theyofferaninvaluableinsightintothepast andprovideasenseofcommunityandexpression.
CoburgCemetery, likemost, tellsauniqueandpersonal storyofthepioneerswholaidthefoundationstonesofthedistrict.Coburg’spenalsettlementiswelldocumentedinthemanymemorialstoPentridgeGovernorsandwarders.TheChinesewhofarmedthemarketgardensalongthebanksoftheMerriCreekhavetheirburialgroundatthecemetery.Earlysettlerswhoopeneduplandinthedistrictarecommemoratedwithimpressivemonuments.However,the most predominant theme running through the cemetery isthatofthearea’sworkingclass.
Takeastepbackintimeanddiscovertheforgottenstories ofthepeopleburiedhere.Youwillmeetpoliticalleaders,sportsmen,heroes,villainsandvictimsofdisaster.
