Our technical products are produced and tested to meet in-house standards. Where there is a South African standard in place, such as the South Africa National Standard (SANS) by the South Africa Bureau of Standards (SABS), our products are tested and certified to ensure they conform.

Selected Cobra products are also Joint Acceptance Scheme for Water Installation Components (Jaswic) approved and listed, which means they are accepted for use by municipal bodies.

Some of our Cobra Technical products are finished with our Cobra PureShine chrome finish. SANS requires a chrome plate thickness of 0.3 microns (µm) to reduce wear on the product. Cobra chrome plating exceeds this with an average thickness of 0.44µm, while the electroplated nickel substrate on our products exceeds the statutory 12µm with an average of 13.75µm.

Ultimately, users can be assured that Cobra chrome plated products offer superior wear resistance. The below icons indicate the colour of the corresponding product in the catalogue section of this book.

AERATORS

A major function of Cobra aerators is anti-splash. The increased surface area of aerated water ensures this by breaking down the surface tension of the water stream. This results in a dramatic decrease of splashing, keeping tiles dry and cupboards under basins free of mould. Aerators save water. Air bubbles in the stream displace water and a tap fitted with an aerator delivers less water on full flow than the same tap with the aerator removed. In addition, the reduced water usage of aerated taps means energy is saved when producing hot water. Cobra aerators also control stream straightness and diameter and meet the requirements of European standard EN 246. Their noise level is less than 15 db (A) at 3 bar (43.5 PSI). Lime build-up in and on aerators reduces air intake and water outlet, thereby reducing aeration, resulting in splashing and loss of water stream shape. Lime build-up also supports the growth of bacteria. Cobra aerators are manufactured from a polymer that resists lime build-up.

EcoMind

Save precious resources with water-saving technology.

Flow restrictors supplied with Cobra taps and mixers can be easily serviced by home owners. The restrictors are pressure compensating, meaning the stipulated flow will not be exceeded, regardless of inlet pressure.

EasySwitch

For a fresh look, change out the head of your tap without changing the body.

The handle assembly can be removed from Cobra screw down type taps. Depending on the type of headpart used in the tap (½” light pattern, ½” heavy pattern or ¾”), various designs of Cobra handle assemblies can be used to replace the old design.

Dezincification resistant brass ( DR/DZR brass)

Dezincification relates to the corrosion of brass. The minimisation of this is a critical aspect of the quality (fitness for purpose) of plumbing fittings that come into contact with water. The risk and rate of dezincification increases with water hardness and the acidity or alkalinity of water (away from a PH of 7).

Dezincification-resistant brass, or DZR/DR brass, is brass that is characterised by exceptional resistance to this type of corrosion. The resistance is achieved by adherence to exacting specifications for chemical composition and careful process controls. All DZR brass must pass an ISO 6509 dezincification resistance laboratory test.

In South Africa, the use of DZR brass for components of brass plumber’s fittings come into contact with water is national law. Building inspectors are being trained to demand the removal of plumber’s brassware that does not conform to statutory law.

This includes high, medium and entry-level housing.

Government

• Sales forecast quantities for these items are put together monthly by the LIXIL sales team and stock is produced, assembled or ordered in in advance according to these forecasts as well as any expected new business or promotional activity.

• The primary objective of this policy is quicker stock delivery times to customers as there would already be stock on hand available to be delivered.

Make to Order Items

• These products have infrequent order patterns and are not part of the brand’s core ranges. Keeping stock of these items often adds complexity and higher costs to the supply chain process.

• Products and/or parts are only produced or ordered when a customer order has been received.

• Although this may add time to the expected delivery date, the cost savings we achieve by not holding stock of these items allows us to offer other benefits to customers, such as reduced pricing and marketing campaigns.

To maintain the lustre of chrome plated surfaces simply wipe occasionally with a soft damp cloth using a mild dishwashing detergent or soap solution. Rinse, dry and buff with a soft cloth. Warning!

Many household and industrial cleaners contain abrasives and/or harsh chemical compounds and acids. Do not use these cleaners as they may irreparably discolour, dissolve or scuff the chrome plated finish.Avoid using abrasive cloths or scouring pads. Maintenance

The frequency and extent of maintenance required for this product varies according to prevailing site and operational conditions. No regular maintenance is required and spare parts are available for key components.

LIXIL Africa warrants that their products will be clear of material and manufacturing defects. Appraisal of the above will be done against ruling manufacturing specifications and standards at the date of manufacture. Defective product will be repaired or exchanged at LIXIL Africa’s sole discretion. LIXIL Africa shall not be liable for indirect or consequential loss or damage.

THE WARRANTY WILL BE VOIDED UNDER THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

• Products used with water pH falling outside of the guidelines set by the Department Of Water Affairs and Forestry or similar body.

• Products not installed by a registered or accredited installer. • Products used with, or included in, installations where water temperatures are outside of the

temperature range stipulated for that product, or as laid down in the standards for water supply and drainage (SANS 10252 & 10254) or an equivalent international standard.

• Products not installed according to manufacturer’s installation instructions or according to valid Water Regulations and general good plumbing practice.

• Products which have failed as a result of dirt or debris in pipe-work which has not been flushed prior to the use of terminal fittings.

• Where a defect is attributable to the incorrect use or incorrect handling of the product.• Where routine maintenance has been neglected. • If spare parts other than the original spare parts are used during repairs or maintenance of the

product.• If damage was caused by transport by a third party transporter. • If the surface of the product has been scratched. • Products used or intended for display purposes. • If consumables (e.g. filters, filter cartridges, aerators or batteries) or material subject to wear and tear

(such as seals or hoses) are affected. • If product damage is as a result of chemicals and cleaning agents, lime-scale build-up,

aggressive environmental influences, or disruptions resulting in damage which are caused by freezing or lime-scale build-up.

• If the defect is caused by specific environmental circumstances (e.g. excess or negative pressure in the line, excess voltage or under voltage on the line).

• If the defect is attributable to wilful or negligent damage to the product by the user or a third party.

LIXIL Africa reserves the right to review any specific case in order to assess the validity of this warranty. LIXIL Africa may charge a discretionary service fee when called out to inspect products which are not LIXIL products or where there is an illegitimate claim.

THE WARRANTY IS VALID FOR:

Recommended optimum design pressures and flow rates:For optimum and correct operation, it is critical that the supply pipe to the flush valves is sized correctly by a professional and complies with SANS 10252-1:2012 requirements. In the event that you are unsure of the pipe size, please contact Cobra Technical Services on 0861 21 21 21.

The water supply system should be designed so as to yield a required flow rate at each valve as indicated:

1. Junior Flushmaster toilet flush valves are suitable for operations with flow pressures ranging from 150 - 500kPa (inlet). Minimum Flow Rate required: 65L/min.

2. Junior Flushmaster urinal flush valves are suitable for operations with flow pressure ranging from 30 - 500kPa (inlet). Minimum Flow Rate required: 18L/min.

3. Standard Flushmaster toilet flush valves are suitable for operations with flow pressures ranging from 30 - 300kPa (inlet). Minimum Flow Rate required: 108L/min.

4. Valves must be accessible for maintenance and servicing and a suggested minimum clearance of 60mm is required above the unit for this purpose.

5. The outlet of the flush valve must face vertically downward.

Important:

• All plumbing is to be installed according to the applicable regulations, rules, codes and procedures.• Water supply lines and piping must be sized to provide the adequate volume of water for every flush cycle – refer to

optimum design pressures and flow above.• Take note of the minimum required operating pressure and flow rates required.• Take care not to exceed the maximum system pressure of 600kPa.• Flush all water lines prior to installation to clear them of any potential debris.• Do not use any “toothed tools” to install or service the flushmaster flush valve – this will result in marring /

INTRODUCTION TOCOBRA COMPRESSION FITTINGS

Cobra introduced the compression ring-type copper tube joining system to the South African market in the early 1950’s. It was launched under the “Conex” brand at the time, evolving to Cobra in more recent years. The versatility, efficiency and jointing speed led to its rapid adoption by plumbing contractors.

The introduction of hard drawn copper tube has led to the wider use of copper tube systems in inland areas. Cobra compression is suitable for use with hard drawn tubing (SANS 460 class O). It is a much faster system to install than those used traditionally and the range of fittings is fully comprehensive and all locally made. It has the added advantage that the pipework can be dismantled and re-assembled, should the need arise.

Cobra is ideally suited for use in emergency repairs as well, for instance with the slip couplings D-1XL-15 S/C and D-1XL-22 S/C which can be used to make a repair connection to rigid pipework mounted close to a wall. The fact that the complete connection is a metal to metal mechanical coupling makes it both permanent (no organic sealing material that can deteriorate) as well as being suitable for applications where the heat and open flames of soldered connections can pose a hazard. With the introduction of SABS Specification 1067-1 in 1985 which required the use of dezincification resistant brass, Cobra took steps to ensure that their compression fittings complied with this specification.

COMPRESSION FITTINGINSTALLATION & NOTES

Cobra compression fittings comply and exceed the requirements of SANS 1067 part 1 and are of type A.

• All imperial sizes quoted refer to ends for BSP thread connections.• All metric sizes quoted refer to nominal sizes for copper tubes.• In the compression range both male and female connecting threads are BSP parallel.

Making a compression joint (refer to illustration)

1. Copper tube can be cut with a hacksaw; a fine tooth blade is best. Instead of a hacksaw, roller tube cutters can be used. Do not use too much pressure.

2. Clean the ends of the tube with a file or deburring tool, inside and outside.3. The parts of the joint can be laid out as per below before assembly, or the tube can be pushed into the fitting

without removing the capnut and brass compression ring.4. The tube end slides neatly into the fitting until it stops against the inner shoulder. Tighten the capnut by hand,

ensuring that the tube stays firmly against the inner shoulder.5. Following hand tightening, tighten the nut with a spanner until the tube is difficult to turn in the fitting. Thereafter

fittings should be tightened half a turn. Perform a pressure test and inspection.6. The compression joint is designed to be a metal-to-metal mechanical coupling and therefore no additional sealant

material or compounds should be used on the cones.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS:

• Clockwise and anti-clockwise closing mechanism A ¼ turn ceramic disk head part facilitates the opening and closing of bb taps, pillar taps and side valves with a ¼ turn action.

• Aerated flow restrictors All basin aerated taps and mixers come standard with a 5 litre/minute flow restrictor, facilitating water saving and supporting green building requirements.

• Spares Should you require spares, even for older Cobra models, you are assured the availability of such componentry and sub-assemblies since Cobra retains spares for models as sold for 20 years. This ensures the continued operation of your existing Cobra fittings.

• Dry outlet design Designed as a feature specific to the horizontal outlets in the medical range, this design ensures that all water remaining in the tap chamber runs from the outlet, thus eliminating the growth of bacteria. • Operating handle Angled away from the spout, the 180mm long handle ensures ease of use, particularly for users with limited mobility since the handle can be operated with both elbow and forearm. The handle has no sharp edges, eliminating any threat of injury.

• Progressive cartridge This mechanism reduces the wastage of hot water when compared with traditional single lever cartridges. When the spindle is turned clockwise, it opens the full volume flow of cold water. Turning the spindles further activates the mixing process by adding hot water. At the end of the turning area, only hot water flows. This feature is specific to the basin mixers as well as the wall and pillar type mixers.

• S-connections with integrated shut off valve The new and improved S-connections for the wall type mixers incorporate two unique features, namely: - An integrated isolating ball valve - An integrated stainless steel mesh filter/strainer The integrated isolating ball valve enables the maintenance team to shut off water supply at the S-connector where it enters the wall type mixer. No need to shut off the water supply to the whole building. The stainless steel mesh filter/strainer serves as “double protection” for the cartridge and functional components of the mixer (as it is best practice to install an in-line strainer on the supply line of the water reticulation as well). The strainer will capture possible debris in the water supply or pipe work and features a 550p mesh strainer. It furthermore allows on site adjustment of the maximum allowed blend of hot and cold water.

• All items are chrome plated, ideal for sterile environments.

• The Cobra medical ranges are listed with the Joint Acceptance Scheme for Water Service Installation Components (JASWIC).

Important: Single-layer or multi-layer pipe cannot be used for outside applications.

Basic installation instructions

SANS: 10254 requires that hot and cold water pressure must be balanced (equal pressure) to all mixers, mixing points, showers and hand showers. The installation of the PCV before the cold water tee off will ensure equal static pressure within the system.

Note: Valve is pre-set by the factory and does not require any additional adjustments and settings.

Caution / warning: All installations of products and systems must be in accordance with the applicable

SANS regulations, specifications and standards.

Installations, servicing and maintenance should be done by accredited serviceproviders only.

The pressure control valve must be compatible with the pressure rating of the hot water cylinder and the temperature and pressure relief valve (safety valve).

General requirements

• All pipes must be flushed clean before putting the system into operation.• Water flow must be in the direction of the arrow marked on the valve body.• The valve must be easily accessible for maintenance and servicing.• The relief drain connection must allow for the relief drain pipe to be pulled to one side when removing the

cartridge. Allow a minimum distance of ±100mm for cartridge removal.• Do not install a stop-cock or non-return valve between the hot water cylinder and the pressure control valve.• Do not install a stop-cock between the hot water cylinder and the vacuum breakers on the hot and cold sides.• Supply pipes to be adequately sized.• Please ensure to make use of copper tube with the installation.• Max inlet pressure 2,500kPa.• System pressure according to the rating of the hot water cylinder, i.e. only use a 400kPa PCV with a 400kPa rated

hot water cylinder and a 600kPa PCV with a 600kPa rated hot water cylinder.

Expansion Relief Drain Pipe

• It must be piped in such a manner to drain downwards.• It is not be interconnected with any other pipe.• It is not to discharge in the hot water cylinder drip tray.• Discharge to be positioned where flow is visible.• It is to be protected against frost.• It must have minimal bends and/or fittings.• The pipe must be visible.

1. Cobra-Safe PEX–AL–PEX multi-layer pipe

• High density polyethylene molecularly cross-linked for additional strength. (see pic #9)

• Longitudinally welded aluminium layer provides oxygen barrier and maintains the pipe shape when it has been bent around corners.

2. Cobra-Safe multi-layer pipe inserts

• High tech proprietary polymer provides exceptional tensile strength to allow for compression fitting joints.

• Unique ‘O’ ring seal seals on inner face of Cobra compression fittings, eliminating water contact with the multi-layer pipe’s inner aluminium layer. This ensures oxidation and subsequent joint failure are avoided. They have been designed to only be used with Cobra compression fittings. (see pic #10)

• Cobra-Safe multi-layer pipe system complies to and exceeds the requirements of SANS 21003 parts 2, 3 and 5 as well as SANS 10252-1:2012.

• Cobra-Safe multi-layer pipe system comprises of multi-layer pipe, pipe inserts and compression fittings. Each component has been specifically designed in-conjunction with each other in order to give a secure and permanent joint.

• Failure to use the 3 Cobra components together (fitting, insert & pipe) will render our warranty null & void.

PipeCobra-Safe multi-layer pipe is a composite pipe consisting of 3 layers. The inner and outer layers are made from high density polyethylene, the molecules of which have been permanently joined together through a process which is called cross linking. The inner layer is a continuous tube of aluminium. The aluminium layer is bonded on both sides to both PE-X layers. PE-X Al PE-X pipe has been specifically developed for use in domestic hot and cold water installations (internal use only).

The pipe is part of the Cobra-Safe MLP system as used in conjunction with Cobra-Safe inserts and Cobra compression fittings.This central layer of aluminium is seamlessly welded together and forms a barrier to oxygen, halting oxygen diffusion through the pipe so that it cannot dissolve into water in the pipe and corrode the metal components of the system. It also allows the pipe to better retain the shape into which the plumber bends it as it offsets the shape memory of the PE-X pipe material.

Technical overview:Inserts and SealsCobra-Safe MLP inserts and seals are an integral part of the system. Joints must not be made without inserts and seals.Cobra-Safe inserts are uniquely designed to prevent water from coming into contact with the aluminium inner layer by means of the “O” ring seal and is of a material that can withstand the sustained high temperatures, variations, and high radial mechanical compression forces from the tightened brass compression fitting.

The success of the Cobra-Safe MLP system is dependent on the performance of this component.
