worn suits of armour which covered most or all of their bodies, making it impossible for thetroops to recognise their leader.

No leader wished to become separated from their men so they devised a way to becomeeasily recognisable: they decorated their shields and tabards which covered the tops of theirbodies. The tabards were known as surcoats – a term which soon become corrupted into‘coats of arms’.

Castles were decorated with flags and banners displaying the owner’s family coat of arms.Today many people are interested in their family history and wish to display the arms of thefamily name. Homes are smaller than medieval castles of course and framed prints havetaken the place of the large flags and banners of times long gone.

It is possible to arrange for a personal coat of arms, contact the College of Arms in Londonand be prepared to pay a considerable sum for the privelidge!
