GreenVolts to use HenkelsAquence coatings to protect itsCPV solar equipment fromcorrosionHenkel announced that its Aquence Co-Cure technology has been selected for useby GreenVolts, Inc. for its higher-per-forming, lower cost protection againstcorrosion and UV-damage in the solar in-dustry. GreenVolts, provider of theworlds only complete and fully inte-grated concentrating photovoltaic (CPV)solar system, and its investor and global

strategic partner ABB, a leader in powerand automation technologies, are thefirst to use this process for solar energyequipment. Henkel worked with Green-Volts and leading paint and coatingscompany AkzoNobel to customize aprocess that layers Henkels Aquence au-todeposition coatings with a powder top-coat and co-cures them in a singleoven. This lean paint shop process, whichhas been very successful in the automo-tive industry, now provides solar compo-nents with higher quality finishes, increased durability, and ultraviolet pro-tection for 25 years. Additionally, theprocess reduces environmental impact, since it contains no heavy metals orsludge, and lowers water and energy re-quirements. According to Henkel, mostsolar equipment manufacturers use ahot-dip galvanization process to protecttheir metal parts. While industry-stan-dard, this process has drawbacks. Thehigh temperatures can introduce stressesin the dipped metal parts. These stressesand any dimensional distortions can beweak points in a system. Also, the galva-nization process leaves a thick layer thatcan be problematic for complex shapes, especially internal cavities. For example, threaded holes may reduce in size so thatbolts do not fit properly. The Aquenceprocess is more precise, and can providea smoother, higher quality surface fortopcoats and finishes the company said.

AkzoNobel introducesMetaflex SP 1050 pre-treatment for aerospacecoatingsA new chrome free pretreatment for thecommercial aircraft maintenance marketis being presented at MRO Europe byAkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings. Underthe name Metaflex SP 1050 Pre-treat-ment, the chrome free, water-basedproduct is the most recent addition tothe Metaflex brand. Metaflex SP 1050Pre-treatment offers corrosion protec-tion through increased adhesion of painton metal, meeting the rigorous anti-cor-rosion requirements of AMS 3095. Rec-ognized as a universal pre-treatment forcommercial aircraft maintenance,Metaflex SP 1050 Pre-treatment can beapplied over several metals and com-posite. Furthermore, it improves adhe-sion of the paint system on rivets, compared to traditional conversioncoatings and wash primer pre-treat-ments. A solution to simplify the aircraftmaintenance process, the system bringstime and cost saving benefits to thepaint shop and an innovative approachto the way surface pre-treatment prod-ucts are utilized in the repaintingprocess the company said. ReducedVOC emissions by as much as 75 per-cent offer an additional advantage, re-sulting in a non hazardous, odorlessproduct. CW

CIN invests 12 million euros inMaia plantCIN, Iberias leading paint and varnishcompany, unveiled plans to invest 12 mil-lion euros in increasing the manufactur-ing capacity of its plant producing powderpaints for the industrial sector, in Maia.

We have been turning away cus-tomers because we do not have any morecapacity. It was essential to increase thecapacity in a segment - Industrial Finishes- which is geared towards exports andwhich has ample business potential for theCIN Group, said Joo Serrenho, chair-man of the CIN Group. Our productsare well accepted by foreign markets andrequests are regularly made.

The investment is scheduled for vari-ous phases over five years. The first phasehas already begun. It comprises a total ofsix million euros and will be completed inJuly this year.

Powder paints currently represent 11percent of the groups total turnover. Thegroup will produce an additional 50 per-cent in the first phase, reaching 10,000 tonsper year. This increase in production willbe almost entirely channelled for export.

final phase will increase the installed ca-pacity to 14,000 tons/year through the in-stallation of new production lines.

These works will not only allow thebrand to increase its operations in keyoverseas markets such as Central Europe, but also strengthen the CIN Groups lead-ership in Portugal, driving an increase inits current market share.

Environmental sustainability was con-sidered throughout the project, with theintroduction of new technologies and newproduction processes, such as bonding, which allows the development of polyesterpowder coatings with metallic effects, freeof heavy metals, to be used in architecturalprojects. The processes of the current plantwill also be streamlined and made moreflexible. This investment in market leadingtechnology allows the creation of evermore innovative products that are eco-suf-ficient and also more competitive.

The expansion of the Maia plant will ini-tially create an additional 15 jobs to the 58already existing, and increase the area de-voted to R&D, which currently employs 17people solely in the area of powder paints.

CIN INDSTRIA, S.A. was founded in2007. It was created by the demerger ofCIN, S. A., with the aim of optimising thecompanys position in the industrial paintsmarket, a market that CIN has lead since1958.

CIN INDSTRIA sells powder paintsdeveloped and produced in its plant lo-cated in Maia. search aimed at advancing thefundamental understanding and use ofmaterials across a variety of energy andindustrial applications.

The BP-ICAM will be modeled on ahub and spoke structure, with the hublocated within The University of Man-chesters Faculty of Engineering and Phys-ical Sciences, which has core strengths inmaterials, engineering, characterization, collaborative working, and a track recordof delivering breakthrough research andengineering applications that can be de-ployed in the real world. The spokesand other founder members, all world-class academic institutions, are the Uni-versity of Cambridge, Imperial CollegeLondon, and the University of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign.

The ten-year investment program willfund research into advanced materials andis expected to support 25 new academicposts, along with 100 post-graduate re-searchers and 80 post-doctoral fellows.

This coalition Government is com-mitted to putting innovation and researchat the very heart of its growth agenda, said the UK Chancellor of the ExchequerGeorge Osborne. We are ensuring theUK maintains it competitive edge in sci-ence and we are creating an environmentwhere innovation can flourish. Thats whytop businesses such as BP are investing inthe UK and supporting our world-leadinguniversities in delivering cutting edge re-search. And as an MP for the North Westof England I particularly welcome the factthat BPs International Centre for Ad-vanced Materials will be based at Man-chester University.

Advanced materials and coatings willbe vital in finding, producing and pro-cessing energy safely and efficiently in theyears ahead, as energy producers work atunprecedented depths, pressures and tem-peratures, and as refineries, manufactur-ing plants and pipeline operators seek everbetter ways to combat corrosion and de-ploy new materials to improve their oper-ations, said Bob Dudley, BP group chiefexecutive.Manchester has world-leading

capabilities and facilities in materials andwas chosen after a global search to act asthe hub of the center, working with otherworld-class university departments. Welook forward to deepening further thevery productive partnership that alreadyexists between our professionals in BP andthe academic team at Manchester.

The BP-ICAM hub will be based indedicated premises which will use state-of-the-art tools to support this major in-ternational collaboration. The BP-ICAMwill carry out research into seven primaryareas of direct interest to industry: struc-tural materials, smart coatings, functionalmaterials, catalysis, membranes, energystorage and energy harvesting. Initialfocus will be on: structural materials, suchas new metal alloys and composites fordeepwater production, and high pres-sure/high temperature reservoirs; smartcoatings, for increased protection from the

elements and improving a structures us-able life, protecting pipelines and offshoreplatforms from corrosion; and mem-branes and other structures, for separa-tion, filtration and purification of oil andgas, water and chemicals in production, refining and biofuels processes and petro-chemicals.

This should allow us to change theway we build, operate and maintain ourequipment; manufacture cleaner and moreefficient products; develop imaginative en-ergy sources and then store that energy forwhen it is needed most; and increase theuse of lighter metals and composites forstructures and products, said Dudley.

The universities will have academicfreedom to publish fundamental scienceresulting from the BP-ICAMs work, whilecommercial agreements will cover specifictechnological applications of the work.

BASFs global automotiverefinish training network isgrowingBASF is expanding its global automotiverefinish training network. In Hanoi, Viet-nam, a new Refinish Competence Center(RCC) has just opened, with new trainingcenters in the pipeline for the UnitedStates and Italy. The openings are influ-enced by an increasing number of trainingrequests the company said.

Spanning the globe from various AsiaPacific countries including Australia andChina, to the United States, France andGermany, BASF offers training for its au-tomotive refinish customers at its RCCs.The training network comprises more than50 training centers, where painters practiceand perfect the use of automotive paints.

At the RCCs, participants learn fromprofessional trainers who share industryknowledge and tips the participants needfor high-quality and technically perfectautomotive refinishing. Innovative prod-ucts and techniques also deliver a high re-turn on investment for the participants.

In 2011, approximately 12,000painters attended training courses at theRCCs worldwide with global demandconstantly increasing. In the region of AsiaPacific, more than 2,000 painters fromvarious bodyshops participate in profes-sional training courses at one of the RCCseach year.

These days, painters need more thantraditional training. For this reason, weoffer training courses at the RCCs thatfocus on both the quality and the effi-ciency of the seminar participants, saidKen Marshall, head of automotive refin-ish coatings in Asia Pacific for BASF.

BASF is expanding its network ofRCCs around the world. In Italy, an RCCis under construction in Cesano Maderno. At the same time, plans for the construc-tion of a new RCC in Atlanta are in fullswing in the U.S., where operations arescheduled to begin with high-quality andmodern equipment in mid-2013.

coating, which insulates while allowingthrough visible light and providing UV re-sistance, will be used for skylight insula-tion in the Caribbean MarketplaceRenovation Project.

The company said Nansulate coatingtechnology is well suited for use as skylightinsulation because it provides an effectiveway to reduce heat transfer through glassor plexiglass, while also allowing trans-mission of approximately 92 percent ofvisible light, as tested on pane glass, andproviding important UV resistance.

Industrial Nanotechs coatings havebeen used in skylight applications at theTampa Port Authority, The Vernon Bankin Louisiana, and at the Frost Art Mu-seum at Florida International University.Skylights are often used in architecture toallow in natural daylight, which reducesthe need for interior lighting. Unfortu-nately, without the protective advantagethat Nansulate offers, they can act as aproblem area for heat loss and gain, there-fore increasing cooling and heating costs.Another issue is glare and harmful UVrays streaming through the glass, whichare all problems that Nansulate coatingtechnology helps solve the company said.

BASF designers receive red dot award forpresentation of automotive color trends

BASF Coatings and the design agency Are We Designer arejoint winners of the red dot award: communication designfor the design of their global au-tomotive color trend book.

The red dot award is a world-wide design awards. More than6,000 works from 43 countrieswere submitted in the communi-cation design category alone. The designers at BASF Coatings impressed customers in theautomotive industry and the jury with their portrayal of auto-motive color trends in their trend book.

Every year, BASF Coatings publishes a limited-edition globaltrend book exclusively for automotive customers. Automotivedesigners use it as a source of information and inspiration. Thetrend book describes the social movements and developmentsresearched by the designers. The resulting color trends are il-lustrated with original coated color samples. This is the seventhtime that BASF has collaborated on this book with Cologne,Germany-based design agency Are We Designer.

The challenge with the trend book was not just to portraythe complex trends in a comprehensible way and bridge thegap to the associated colors.

Putting colors and their fine nuances on paper is difficult. The effect of our coatings is based on the interaction of color andthe surface it is applied to, said BASF designer Mark Gutjahr. Therefore, the color section was completed with individually

coated samples that show automotive designers what is possible. On the basis of these suggestions, the specific car colors can bedeveloped in collaboration with the automotive companies.

With the red dot award, we have won one of the worldsmost important design awards, said Dr. Wolfgang Reckordt, head of marketing for automotive OEM coatings Europe at BASF.In 2011, we won the Materialica Design + Technology Awardand a prize in the Automotive Brand Contest for our color in-novation called XFine. This shows that we are on the right trackwith our color developments and the way in which we arepreparing and illustrating them for the automotive industry.

The North Rhine-Westphalia Design Center (formerly Indus-trieform e.V.) has been rewarding outstanding design since 1954.The coveted red dot has become established as an interna-tionally recognized seal of quality and is awarded in the three dis-ciplines of product design, design concepts and prototypes andcommunication design.

In the communication de-sign category, the 15 jurorsinternational designexpertsmake their decisionsbased on criteria such asrecognition value, social rele-vance, target group-orientedapproach, originality and aes-thetics. The submissions thatreceived the red dot will be ondisplay from October 25 to 28, 2012 in the special exhibitionDesign on stage winners red dot award: communication de-sign 2012 at the Alte Mnze in Berlin.
