Volunteers are needed to provide and crew watercraft, pick up along the streets, unload boats and trucks, help out at the headquarters, provide and drive pickup trucks.
Spring Tide begins at 8:30 a.m., with a brief dedication ceremony by the creeksideoverlook at Morse Landing Park on Business 17 South. The cleanup work beginsimmediately thereafter. Morse Landing will be the main trash-deposition site, with addi-tional containers located by the boat-ramps at Marina Colony and Cedar Hill Landing, and beside Sara Js restaurant in Garden City.
The cleanup proceeds from 9 a.m. until noon, when volunteers reconvene at the HotFish Clubs Gazebo for the Great Murrells Inlet Chowder Cook-Off, an informal com-petition among Inlet and Garden City restaurants that brings the winner the BestDamn Chowder award, and feeds the cleanup participants. The afternoon is devoted
to appreciation for the workers and a celebration of a clean creek.

Fresh Grouper or
Imitation GrouperWritten by Lee Wilson
In todays slow economy, people are doing all they can to save money. Some of which
are not good. Mislabeling of product is not only ethically wrong, but also illegal. The
newest scam is selling frozen imported fish as Fresh local.
A perfect example is Grouper. Fresh Grouper is sold in many locations over the coun-
try, including: grocery stores, restaurants, fish markets and so on. Now there are those
who are selling Swai as Grouper. Swai is a catfish that is farmed extensively in
Southeast Asia, far from being a grouper.
Swai is a great fish, it has a whiteflesh (cooked or raw) and mild fla-
vor. Fresh Grouper is translucent
and slightly pink; when it is cooked it
turns a nice white color with a great
taste. This fish switch can hurt busi-
ness for many people in the commu-
nity; local fishermen, wholesalers,
restaurants and so forth. Think of
what can happen if a consumer eats
a meal of Fresh Grouper only to
learn that it is Asian Catfish. Manyvisitors to our area have never seen
or tried grouper before, lets give
them the real thing and show them
what real South Carolina Seafood is.
Seafood Handling and Storing TipsThe correct storage and manipulation of seafood is very important because fish and seafood areextremely perishable. After appropriate selecting the seafood when buying it, pay attention to thefollowing:
After buying your seafood take it home as quickly as possible, in order to put it in therefrigerator/freezer.
Store your seafood in the refrigerator if you intend to use it within two days after purchase. In caseyou will not use yourseafood within two days after purchase, wrap it in moisture-proof paper orplastic wrap, placed in a heavy plastic bag,or stored in an air-tight, rigid container, and store it inthe freezer. Keep the temperature of the refrigerator between 34and 40F, and of your freezer at0F or colder, as close to -20F as possible.
Store live shellfish in containers covered with clean, damp towels or paper towels. Do not put liveshellfish in an air-tight container where they could asphyxiate and die.
Shrimp, squid, and shucked shellfish should be storage in leakproof bags, plastic containers orcovered jar.
Shelf life of the following seafood:
Squid and freshly shucked clams: 1-2 days Shrimp and scallops: 2-3 days
Freshly shucked oysters: 5-7 seven days
Mussels and clams in the shell: 2-3 days
Oysters in the shell: 7-10 days
Live lobsters and crabs: cook in the same day they are purchased
Frozen seafood should be stored in the freezer. Get the best quality of your frozen fish or shell-fish by using them withinthree to six months. After longer periods it is more probably they looseflavor and texture. Once your seafood is unfrozen, do not refreeze it.
Pasteurized crabmeat - heated in cans at a temperature high enough to kill bacteria, but lowerthan that used in canning - should be stored unopened in the refrigerator for up to 6 months andused within 4 days of opening.
When freezing fish at home, wash it under running, cold water and then dry it with paper towel. After that wrap it plastic wrap, then overwrap it with freezer paper or foil. Another option is to usethe plastic bags for freezer. Label the packagewith the date and content. Finally put the packagein the coldest part of the freezer, in order to quickly freeze.

16/2416 COASTAL JOURNAL
In March 2010, the local paranormal investigation team, the P.I.T. Crew conducted investi-gations at a private residence in Little River, SC. Their first investigation into the claims pro-duced such promising results, the team returned to continue the research.
The house itself has quite the unique history. The building was purchased from the original
owners and moved to its current location in 1981. The building was originally used to store
tobacco once it had been cured in the barns until sorted, wrapped, and taken to market to
be sold. Once the building was no longer utilized for the storage of cured tobacco the orig-
inal owners used it to cure sweet potatoes. This was a process by which sweet potatoes
were laid out on the floor, with sky lights cut in the roof to let in the natural sunlight, and left
there until ready to be eaten and/or sold. The building was converted in such a remark-
able way that it is nearly impossible to know its true origin. One would never know this pri-
vate residence once resided in another town for the storage of cured tobacco and the cur-
ing of sweet potatoes without having prior knowledge of it.
For years, the current ownership has experienced rather active paranormal occurrences in
the home. They believe that two spirits reside within. The first is that of a little girl in a long, wavy dress. The second is an older gentleman, distinguished and proper. The biggest and
the most unique claim about the activity lie in the fact that these two spirits have an affinity
for music. Almost always on cue, when music is present in the house, the spirits become
active and do not hesitate to let themselves known.
My mother said she never noticed anything until after she acquired the piano in 1985. The
piano originally belonged to her maternal Grandmother and was one of the first pianos built
after World War II. I would tell my mother I heard someone walking around I guess starting
around the age of 8 and I am now 30 and still hearing things, stated the client.
They were truthful about their encounters. Both the mother and daughter were very
descriptive of what they saw and heard. Although they seemed somewhat frustrated, its my
opinion that they werent looking for closure or a solution. They simply wanted someone out-
side of the home to verify that their experiences were real, stated P.I.T. Crew ParanormalResearcher Kevin McCray.
We contacted the P.I.T. Crew because we wanted to know if what we were experiencing
was really happening. My niece would reach up like she was looking at someone to pick
her up when she was almost 2 years old, but she was never looking at any of us in the room
since we were behind her, added the client.
The first investigation into the home was conducted by Head Investigator Stephen
Lancaster and Paranormal Researcher Kevin McCray of the P.I.T. Crew. The night began
with the team performing routine tests on the building. The house was very quiet with little
to no activity. For the first few hours the team was almost convinced there was nothing out
of the ordinary happening within the home. All of their tests produced negative results, turn-
ing up nothing that could be deemed paranormal.
About three hours into the investigation, the team
recalled the emphasis the ownership put on the fact that
the alleged entities love music and become active when
it is brought into the home.
We treated this house like we treat most residentialinvestigations. 95% of the time the majority of alleged
residential hauntings can be disproved fairly easily. We
were finding nothing out of the ordinary and after about
three hours the night really felt like we were just going
through the motions. Then we recalled the music aspect
of the clients beliefs. At that point, it was time to get a
little experimental with our research by implementing the
music side of the claims, said Head Investigator
Stephen Lancaster.
The team proceeded to station cameras, audio
recorders, sound meters and other useful devices all
around the house piano. Once set up for the experi-ment, Lancaster sat down at the acoustic instrument and
began to play. Within moments of playing, every video
camera that was trained on Stephen and the piano pow-
ered down completely drained of battery life.
EvokingSpirits
With MusicWhen my mother plays the piano she almost always feels his presence standing behindher and at times sees what seems to be his shadow. On other occasions we feel like some-
one is watching us, added the client.
We lost power to three video cameras simultaneously not long after I began improvising on
the piano. If it happens to one I really dont look into it too much but when it happens to
three at the exact same time that changes the perspective a little. It was really interesting
to see that once music was introduced the activity started to occur. This was a step closer
to validating the clients claims, stated Lancaster.
Without video cameras, the team decided to perform another sweep of the house while their
equipment was recharging. Stephen and Kevin decided to start shooting some photogra-
phy throughout the home for documentation purposes. They decided to start in the daugh-
ters first floor bedroom where much of the activity is said to occur.
Ive had things moved around my bedroom several times and have seen the shadow of
what appears to be a young girl. My bedroom door will open and close on its own over and
over, stated the client.
Kevin was standing in the doorway of the daughters bedroom when I started shooting pho-
tos. The very first photo I shot captured a strange mist-like anomaly above his head inside
the room. Without saying anything I snapped a few more photos in the same spot only to
find out whatever it was had vanished. I quickly grabbed Kevins attention and showed him
what was captured in the first photograph, said Stephen.
Prior to the investigation, the clients had shown the team dozens of photos taken in theirhome that contained what they believed to be orbs and other unexplainable anomalies.
After snapping this shot, the team once again began growing closer to validating the clients
claims.
The attention of the P.I.T. Crew quickly moved from the daughters bedroom to one of theirflashlights on the kitchen counter which is adjacent to the room they were currently investi-
gating. The flashlight was pulsating in a very dim fashion. Luckily, the still shot cameras
also came equipped with a low grade video feature that allowed them to briefly film the
occurrence. Lancaster wasted no time asking questions aloud in hopes of getting some sort
of response. On cue to his questions, the flashlight would flicker extremely bright as if
responding. Moments later, the teams magnetic pickups began registering a low sound
through the amps that was in perfect rhythm.
Within a fifteen minute period we lose power to three video cameras, capture a strange
anomaly over Kevins head in a photograph, experience what could be some form of com-
munication through one of our flashlights, and then hear what I described as a heartbeat
coming through the amps of our magnetic pickups. This all leads back to the claim that
music evokes the spirits within this home. None of these
occurrences were happening until I started playing that
piano, stated Lancaster.
The outlook for the evening had risen from a typical
uneventful residential investigation to a more promising
productive night of research. The team was still waiting
on the video cameras to recharge so they decided torelocate to the living room to conduct an EVP session.
During an EVP session, various audio recorders ranging
from digital to analog are implemented while asking rel-
ative questions in hopes of capturing a disembodied
voice on the recordings.
Lancaster and McCray set up for the session on the liv-
ing room coffee table. The session began withLancaster asking random questions out loud in hopes of
gaining a relative response. McCray followed up with
questions of his own. During the session no voices were
captured but the team did experience odd sounds com-ing from various locations throughout the home. One
very audible sound came from the area in which the
piano resided. Kevin immediately went to investigate
only to find nothing.

17/2417 COASTAL JOURNAL
At this point, the video cameras were fully charged and filming of the research could com-
mence. The team decided to relocate upstairs. Once on the second floor, the odd sounds
from the first level began once again. A loud thud type sound drew the teams attention
quickly back to the first floor.
We moved to the second level of the home and started filming again. Not long after we
started investigating the upstairs, the odd sounds from downstairs started up again. One
sound in particular grabbed our attention. It sounded like somebody dropped a brick on the
floor. It was loud. Kevin and I returned to the lower level and started investigating around
the piano once more. We started hitting random notes on the piano and then from thedaughters bedroom another odd sound was heard, said Stephen.
The team proceeded back to the daughters bedroom and what they discovered shocked
them into almost a level of disbelief. Immediately they noticed that the bedroom door had
been closed. This isnt a door that a draft could swing. The door is heavy and drags across
the plush carpet when opening or closing. A great deal of force is necessary to open or
close the door. Kevin opened the door slowly to enter the bedroom and what he discovered
put both him and Stephen into a confused state of mind. The chair that was originally under-
neath the computer desk had mysteriously been dragged across the bedroom floor out intothe center of the room.
I couldnt believe it. You could literally see the deep marks in the carpet where this chair
had been pulled out from underneath the desk and dragged into the center of the room.
Kevin and I were excited to say the least. Ironically, the cushion on the chair had music
notes on it, stated Lancaster.
The P.I.T. Crew did everything in their power to explain logically how the bedroom door
could have closed and how this chair could have possibly been moved. Nothing made any
sense other than this being a true paranormal occurrence. Kevin and Stephen were the
only individuals in the home the entire night.
The highlight for me was the discovery that chair in the bedroom had been moved across
the floor. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I cant remember when that happened
last, said Paranormal Researcher Kevin McCray.
The first investigation came to a close and the team packed up the gear, headed back to
the office and began work on reviewing all of the material.
I believe that there is some level of paranormal activity. I dont feel that the mysterious
occupant is a threat, but it does like to make itself known, especially by moving objects.
Perhaps it came with the dwelling but it could have attached itself to one of the many antiq-
uities in the house, added McCray.
Most of the time we dont feel threatened or uneasy, but there have been a few occasionswhere we do feel on edge like maybe we have done something that has agitated our
friend(s), claimed the client.
A few weeks later, a follow up investigation was scheduled and Head Investigator StephenLancaster returned to the Music House alone for a second night of research.
Originally, I was actually planning on bringing more of the team for the second investiga-
tion to get their take on the activity. Instead, I ended up spending the night in the house by
myself to see if I could build a relationship with the alleged spirits residing there, said
Stephen.
For the second investigation, Lancaster knew exactly what to do. He wasted no time sitting
down at the piano and bringing the element of music into the house. Moments into his per-
forming, once again, the video cameras powered off completely drained of battery life.
The video cameras powering off once again when the music presented itself gave me alevel of confidence that I was real close to further validating the claims. I really couldnt
waste any time waiting on the cameras to recharge so I powered up two low grade cameras
I always have on hand as backups, stated Lancaster.
Stephen also took one of the powerless video cameras and plugged it into an outlet inside
the daughters bedroom where during the first investigation a chair had moved into the cen-
ter of the floor. Placing it on a tripod and training it on the infamous chair, Lancaster left the
room while the video camera monitored the active area.
The investigation continued with Stephen relocating to the second level. Like clockwork,
and just like the previous investigation, odd sounds started coming from the first level. He
then proceeded back down the stairs to investigate.
I was half way down the stairs when I heard a light high pitched sound come from the room
with the piano. It sounded like one of the higher octave keys from the instrument. I stopped
briefly and then proceeded into the piano room. At first I found nothing and dismissed the
sound, said Lancaster.
Stephen decided to check on his camera filming the chair in the daughters bedroom.
Everything checked out and the camera was still filming. As he was returning to the piano
room another high pitched note was heard.
It was an amazing capture in my opinion. You can vividly see on the video that nobody was
touching that piano, yet a few random notes were being played. I have never seen or heard
a piano do that and I have been around plenty of instruments in my day, said Stephen.
Lancaster felt it was time to perform a communication session. In the living room he placed
one of the flashlights on the coffee table. During the first investigation the team observed astrange occurrence with one of their flashlights leading them to believe some form of com-
munication was being attempted.
Being in the house alone really helped create an intimate setting I believe. I used a differ-
ent flashlight for this experiment. It either comes on or goes off, there is no in between. I
placed it in plain view on the coffee table and started asking questions. On cue to my ques-
tions, the flashlight would flicker as if responding. One time is coincidental, but this contin-
ued on in a very conversational fashion, Lancaster added.
Lancaster felt as if he broke some ground during this session. I believe a level of comfort
was reached that evening and being alone in the house played a factor in that. The flash-
light was pulsating at one point as if it was hesitating, yet when a response to a question
occurred; the light would flash brighter than it does when it is powered on. It was pretty fas-
cinating, said Stephen.
The second investigation was turning up some really productive results for the Paranormal
Researcher. So he decided to return to the daughters bedroom once more. When Stephen
entered the bedroom the unexplainable happened.
I couldnt believe it. Honestly, it startled me beyond reason. I stepped into the bedroom
and the light that was on top of the camera filming the chair came off and hit me in the chest
before falling to the floor. I have never felt that uneasy before during an investigation.
Something did not want me in that room, explained Lancaster.
Following this experience Stephen felt it was time to call it a night. Maybe some bound-aries were crossed that night. Im not sure. I felt completely comfortable up until that final
experience with the camera light hitting me. At that point, my welcome was worn out. It was
time to go, said Stephen.
The majority of the time the activity doesnt bother us, but there are a few occasions where
we have felt a little uneasy. We feel more like whatever it is, is here more to protect than
harm, added the client.
Lancaster wasted no time returning to the office and loading up the videos of his solo expe-
rience for the entire world to see on the monsterVisionTV.com site. We feel more comfort-
able knowing we arent totally crazy and there really is some type of presence in the house.
We are a little disturbed at some of the activity that has been documented. It has raised
more questions than answers about why it is attracted and/or attached to this house, stat-ed the client.
After two nights of research into the home, the team was able to experience much of what
the clients told them about. If I was to make an assessment based on those two nights of
research, I would say the house is currently active. A level of intelligence was displayed in
the activity. I believe the piano playing on its own and the communication sessions with the
flashlight were that of the little girl entity. Both occurrences seemed to be in a playful light.
The cameras powering off, the chair moving, the door closing and the light hitting me in the
chest could very well be the older gentleman spirit. I think he was very aware of us and did
not want filmed nor did he really want us in that bedroom. I dont think he is dangerous at
all. I just think he was letting us know that this is his house and what he says goes, stat-
ed Lancaster.
Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that the simplest tactic
may prove to be the most productive. In this case, it wasnt thou-
sands of dollars in high tech equipment. In this case it was the
power of music that proved to be the most useful tool in this inves-
tigation, Stephen added.
The P.I.T. Crew has been very informative and straight forward with
us. They thoroughly research the location they are investigating. The coolest part is that they
actually came in trying to find a logical reason for the occurrences and disprove any type of
paranormal activity, added the client.

April 2 - Wayne Caldwell ("Requiem by Fire") at Bove. "Cataloochee," Caldwells acclaimeddebut, was a brilliant portrait of a community and a way of life long gone, a lost America. Now, in "Requiem
by Fire," Caldwell returns to the same fertile Appalachian ground that provided the setting for his first novel,
recalling a singular time in American history when the greater good may not have been best for everyone.
April 9 - Rose Senehi ("Listen to the Wind") at Kimbels in Wachesaw. Rose Senehiis that rarest of combinations: fiction writer and environmental activist. Her books are as much about the rever-
ence for the natural world as t hey are about the fictional history of the places she has inhabited and loved. Set
in rural Western North Carolina where, for one hundred years, there has been the highest concentration of
organized youth camps in the country, Senehis story is as much about the preservation of place as it is the
preservation of souls of the people who inhabit these pages.
April 16 - Karen Zacharias ("Will Jesus Buy Me a New Doublewide? Cause I needmore room for my Plasma TV") at Inlet Affairs. A lot of us want to help the poor on our ownterms. We want to give them a home in the burbs and a big-screen plasma TV because we believe that is the
American Dream. Generations are being taught that God wants to prosper them, but what happens to their f aith,
then, when they dont get the job they prayed for, or the big house on the hill? Karen is a former crime beat
reporter, wife, mom, Tennessee Volunteer, Georgia Peach, Beaver graduate of Oregon State University, sister
in faith, water moccasin bite survivor and 25th Infantry Gold Star daughter.
April 23 - Patricia Falvey ("The Yellow House") at Sea View Inn. Born in Northern Irelandand raised in Ireland and England before immigrating to the U.S., Falvey has set her debut novel during the
highly dramatic Revolutionary Period at the beginning of the 20th century and the personal struggle of young
Eileen ONeill torn between two men on opposite sides of the conflict.
April 30 - Marjory Wentworth ("The Endless Repetition of an Ordinary Miracle")at Carefree Catering. South Carolinas amazingly accessible Poet Laureate brings out her third collec-tion of poems this spring from Press 53. Marjory teaches poetry to cancer patients and their families in a pro-
gram at Roper Hospital called Expressions of Healing. She also teaches in a poets-in-the-schools program

The PoorMisunderstood Egg
by Jonny BowdenJonny's Take, Diet & Weight Loss
Eggs are one of the most perfect foods on the planet.
And that includes the yolk!
Yup, the yolk -- that poor, misunderstood, but essential component of the egg that toooften gets thrown out in a misguided attempt to avoid cholesterol and fat. So let's cleara few things up about eggs, cholesterol, fat and health.
NUMBER ONE: The cholesterol in eggs has virtually no effect on the cholesterol inyour blood.
NUMBER TWO: The fat in the egg yolk is mostly monounsaturated fat, the same kindfound in olive oil. Yes, you heard that right. Of the 5.3 grams of total fat in one largeegg, only 1.6 grams are saturated.
NUMBER THREE: Many of the nutrients that make eggs so incredibly healthy arefound in the yolk. Examples: Lutein and zeaxanthin, two members of the carotenoidfamily that are beneficial for eye health. The yolk also contains choline, which is impor-tant for brain health -- and vitamin D.
The idea that eating eggs is bad for your heart is a myth. No study has linked egg eat-ing to greater risk of heart disease. In fact, quite the opposite. According to an articlefrom Harvard Health (a publication of Harvard Medical School), "The only large study
to look at the impact of egg consumption on heart disease ... found no connectionbetween the two."
Research has also shown that eggs eaten at the start of the day can reduce your dailycalorie intake, prevent snacking between meals and keep you satisfied.
However, not all eggs are created equal. Stay away from scrambled eggs at open buf-fets. While the cholesterol in eggs poses no real harm to you, when that cholesterol is"scrambled" and then exposed to air and oxygen for a long time (like on an open buf-fet), it becomes damaged. That's not something you really want in your body. Better topoach, soft or hard boil. If you do scramble eggs, eat them quickly and don't let themsit around all day long.

William, can you believe today is April 15th, the month got here so quickly! In just a
couple of days the Titanic will be arriving in New York! Are you sure Sabastian and
Tillie understand that we will not be making the trip? I said. Yes, Im sure dear. I sent
another telegram just yesterday as a reminder. Im sure they got it and will send a reply
as soon as they can. They know our birthday gift came early this year and our celebra-
tion will be with Erin. he said.
After hearing about the birth of our baby, gifts from Sabastian and Tillie started arriv-
ing. He joked that he should be the God-father but I am not convinced that it was just
a joke based on the elaborate gifts we have received for Erin. So far she has received
a sterling silver rattle with her initials engraved on it; several designer dresses; some
of the most beautiful dresses I have ever laid eyes on; a frilly white bassinet with a
matching monogrammed blanket, and a surprise gift that is promised to be revealed
when he and Tillie come down from Boston in July.
While I put our little angel down for nap time, William decided to drive to the market to
pick up a block of ice, some freshly caught flounder, today's newspaper and the new
Vanity Fair magazine for me. I glanced periodically out the window for his return as Isang a tune and danced around the living room with Theodore, Erins Teddy Bear.
When William arrived and was walking to the door, I noticed right away that something
was wrong. He entered the back door in silence instead of with his usual jovial man-
ner. He put the block of ice in the box, sat the other items down on the kitchen count-
er, then turned around and motioned for me to read the headlines of the newspaper.
In large bold print it read . . .
Titanic Sinks Four Hours After Hitting
Iceberg; 866 Rescued By Carpathia, Probably
1250 Perish; Ismay Safe, Mrs. Astor Maybe,Noted Names Missing
The Titanic was said to be an unsinkable ship. On April 14, 1912, enormous icebergs
were sighted in direct path of the ship, but little did they know one of the icebergs was
going to kill the majority of the people on board. By 11:40 pm the iceberg had done the
damage by scraping the edge. The Titanic's bow was under at 2:17 am. At 3:00 am the
Titanic totally vanished. It was bound for New York and scheduled to arrive on the 17th.
As I was reading about this horrible tragedy, William was listening to a special broad-
cast regarding the sinking of the Titanic on the radio.
William and I were shocked and stood motionless, looking at each other. Tillie must bedeeply devastated, not knowing whether or not her uncle is still alive. I can only imag-
ine what she is going through at this moment. My mind raced with worried thoughts;
William left the room in a hurry and went into Erins bedroom. With tears streaming
down his face, he watched her for awhile then leaned down and tenderly kissed her
forehead. After a moment or two I walked over to stand beside him; his eyes
expressed the deepest of love. Not a word was spoken between us the emotion
alone was understood. Last night as we slept peacefully and safely in our beds, this
horrible thing was happening. Families were being ripped apart. Even the waves of
the ocean stood still in silence for a moment as if to apologize for playing part in claim-
ing the lives of so many.
Later that day, William sent a telegram to Tillie, offering our deepest, heart felt condo-
lences. What was supposed to be a joyous, historic event, turned into history being
made in the worst possible way. This day will forever be remembered. Because we
acknowledge the precious bond of life, what will become of our trust in travel?
I have had a stomach ache before, but never like this! This time it was a different feel-
ing, unlike anything I have ever felt! William rushed to get me settled; got a glass of
tea, and insisted that I lay down for a spell. About an hour later, I felt fine, as if noth-
ing had ever happened. Experiencing the outburst of monstrous, unpleasant regurgi-
tation is not my idea of having a wonderful afternoon on the beach. Thank goodness,
high tide took the unsightly internal contents out to sea, being careful not to leave a
trail for wildlife to discover.
A few days later in early morning . . .
William, please get Ms. Sarah Ann, she will know what to do, I cried. Something is
dreadfully wrong I thought. Even though William had only been gone for a few min-
utes to get Ms. Sarah Ann, it seemed like hours. Finally, the two of them rushed
through the kitchen door and into our bedroom! William had panic written all over his
face while Ms. Sarah Ann was as calm as an alligator after feeding time. Once again,
my body had calmed down to normal just like it did a few days ago. Ms. Sarah Ann
asked William to be excused from the room and she proceeded to ask questions, much
like the type of questions a doctor would ask.
Nine months later (February 1912) . . .
Good morning my lovely girls! William said as he walked through the bedroom door.
Baby daughter Erin; the precious love of our life, was born on the 4th and I was rock-
ing her to sleep after what seemed to be her fourth feeding, and it was only 7:00 am.
William dotes over his little girl and wanted to stay by our sides but I gave him a little
push and sent him on his way to the office.
The night baby Erin was born, was probably the most frightening time in my life. It was
about 4:00 am and I was awakened by brutal pain shooting through me as I laid in wet
saturated covers. Frantically, I tried to shake William awake and repeated several
times that he must go fetch Dr. Flagg. He was in such a deep sleep and my attempt to
wake him was useless. I began to feel helpless; the intense pain from the contractions
were getting closer in time and the weaker I got the more frightened I became.
Suddenly, I heard knocking at the back door and a voice repeatedly shouted Is every-
thing ok? The knocking turned to banging when no response was heard from inside,
causing William to be awakened by the loud noise. He quickly sat straight up in bed
and realized what was happening. Certainly, at that point, there was no mystery as to
what had to be done! Immediately, a frightened look of terror came over his face.
Right at that moment another pain shot through my body and with all my might I tried
to hold back but I let out a scream that Im sure could be heard several miles away.
The time had arrived for baby Erin to enter into the world.
Suddenly, the back door flew open and in rushed
Ms. Sarah Ann and Miss Lillie; a friend from
Greenville. Angels were watching over me
and my baby that night. Ms. Sarah Ann
and Ms. Lillie, had been awakened by
guinea birds running across the porch,
trying to get away from a hungry razor-
back hog and when she looked out her
window, she happened to notice light com-
ing from our bedroom window. Without hes-
itation the two of them got dressed and rushed
over. I did not know until then that Miss Lillie is a
midwife and had delivered babies in the Upstate. Much
to my relief, a miracle happened and baby Erin was born.

A Party To Remember . . .
Preparation for the grand event of the year has proved to be a busy one at Sabastians
cottage today! As I was finishing my morning routine of combining Erins feeding and
playtime with house cleaning, I occasionally glanced out the window to watch the end-
less activity of delivery trucks and horse drawn wagons bringing in blocks of ice, boxes
of fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits, and several wooden crates; I assume is assorted
libation's. Henry and his father delivered seafood and even a truck delivering musical
instruments joined the entourage. Indeed there must be a large list of guests coming.
Ms. Sarah Ann offered to watch Erin for us tonight while we attend the party. She said
she would make an appearance earlier in the evening before
getting Erin, as she is not accustomed to parties or late night
visits at her age. This visit to the cottage will be unlike the first
one as I will be more appropriately dressed for the occasion.
One afternoon while I was shopping in Georgetown at Mr.
Brilles store, I ran into Ms. Emma from the lodge in Murrells
Inlet. During our conversation we discussed what to wear to
the party. She was very helpful and understood my desire to
be elegant but not expose too much skin. Not to be prudish
Ms. Emma, but I am not that colorful! We both laughed untilwe cried! Oh Sophia, child, there is no other like you! Ms.
Emma replied.
Fashionable gown styles have changed during the last couple
of years. Some styles are still columnar, with long skirts that
fall quite straight, but according to articles in the magazines I read, skirts are becom-
ing more elaborately draped and quite fanciful. Accessories like full length white gloves
will be added to complete the outfit splendidly; shoes with a medium heel will match in
a color to compliment the gown. Also, according to what I have read in Vanity Fair,
Capezio shoes are comfortable for a style of dancing called Ragtime dancing. Hair is
also worn up and decorated with headbands, ornaments, or feathers.
Careful not to show too much skin from the front of my new blue satin dress, it dipped
slightly showing just enough cleavage that William took a second look and let out a
whistle that wakened baby Erin. At the same time, as I was walking backwards, leav-
ing the room to go calm the baby, William took a quick step forward, attempting to grab
me; he stumbled and fell, pressing us both against the door, making an even louder
noise as the door hit the wall behind. How frightening it must have been for little Erin
to be awakened by a high pitched whistle followed by a loud banging of a door hitting
against the wall. The sight we created was so hilarious that we couldn't help but burst
out in laughter. Suddenly, it was quiet again, Erin had fallen back to sleep. We tip-
toed into her bedroom and stood together quietly watching her. At that moment, with
William by my side, I realized I had everything I could ever want, right in this room.
Ms. Sarahs visit to the cottage was quick but said to be enjoyable. We arrived at her
house shortly after she had gotten home and settled in to receive baby Erin. We
walked in with Erin and a large diaper bag full of all the necessities that a baby needs,
plus some! Thank you so kindly Ms. Sarah Ann for keeping watch over Erin while we
attend the party. We will not overstay our welcome and will return directly after 9:00
pm. I said.
Cars lined the drive and along both sides of the sandy street outside Sabastians
home. As we walked to the door, I had butterflies in my stomach much like the first
time we visited the cottage. The door swung open as if our approach was expected atthat very moment; Eve and her husband Robert greeted us with a warm smile, took my
wrap and Williams hat, then showed us to the veranda. I stopped short of the door
leading out to the veranda just to gaze at all the people oh my, I thought as I caught
my breath, it is a gathering like I have never seen! There are so many people, all
dressed in their finest. The musicians were playing orchestrated music that filled the
air with pleasant sounds; waitstaff floated in and around the guests with trays adorned
with delicately prepared hors d'oeuvres and other trays topped with assorted cocktails.
William sensed my nervousness and gently took hold of my arm and placed it in his.
Inwardly, I am bold with my thoughts, but outwardly, I am more reserved and a bit shy,
when it comes to crowds. This visit, I am beautifully dressed for the occasion and hear-
ing his sweet words gave me the confidence I needed to let go of my inhibitions and
thoroughly enjoy the party! William, look over there by the fountain its Tillie and
Sabastian lets hurry to see them! I said
Next months issue Sabastian and Tillie make their announcement during the party.
June 1912 . . .
Baby Erin is four months old now and she is as precious as she can be! Why, she
could be a model baby. I do believe I will enter her in one of our communities month-
ly Pretty Baby contest. It would be best to wait until she is able to sit up well without
our assistance before entering the contest.
This morning, William stayed in the house to keep watch over Erin while I went to hunt
for sea shells. I heard a voice calling my name from down the beach, it was Ms. Sarah.I ran to meet her half way and from the time we approached each other, we didnt stop
talking until it was time to part. We had a wonderful time talking about Erin and catch-
ing up on current happenings in the area. I
thanked her again for the loving guidance she
gave me during my pregnancy and most of all,
for being there the night Erin was born what a
blessing it was that her friend Miss Lillie hap-
pened to be there at the right time. Ms. Sarah
said that when her friend sent her a telegram
saying she would be in the area and wanted to
stay for a few days, she thought it was a bit odd,
as Miss Lillie has never wanted to stay morethan a day. She has always believed in short
visits, not to wear out her welcome, she says.
We both agreed that things happen for a reason
and Miss Lillie was sent here at just the right time
to help in the delivery of baby Erin. Ms. Sarah
said the Lord knows whats ahead of us and His plan is always in perfect timing; we
are not to question; simply believe and have faith.
Ms. Sarah had a bucket and shovel with her and wanted to help find sea treasures
along the edge of the shore line so we took off our shoes, tied our hats on tightly and
commenced to digging. She insisted on doing most of the digging so I held the buck-et firmly in place as the ocean water caressed its round shape. After an hour of treas-
ure hunting, her bucket over-flowed with some great findings. It was feeding time for
Erin so we hurried to divide our findings, hugged, said our farewells, then off we went
in opposite directions.
The commissioned piece for Sabastian is almost finished. I had to put it on the back
burner for awhile during my pregnancy since the smell of the oil paints made me nau-
seated. The subject of the painting is a side-wheeler that makes frequent trips into
Georgetown. At first I was going to paint assorted sea shells with an ocean back-
ground, but since Sabastian is a free spirit and enjoys seeing the world, travel came to
mind, so I thought it would be more appropriate to paint the side-wheeler instead.
Sabastian and Tillie will be here for the month of July and have planned a party with a
large guest list consisting of friends from our area and guests traveling here from
Boston as well. Since the painting will be completed when they arrive, Tillie announced
that the party will be a multi-celebration party; first, in celebration of her uncles survival
after the tragic sinking of the Titanic; secondly, the birth of baby Erin; third, the unveil-
ing and presentation of my painting to Sabastian, and she said the fourth part of the
celebration will be a surprise announcement. She went further to comment on my
impatience when it comes to surprises and said that I must wait enduringly!
Not that it is any of my business what type of living arrangements or mutual agreement
Sabastian and Tillie share in regards to their relationship, but a proposal of marriagewould certainly be most favorable in the eyes of the elders and a proper thing to do for
Miss Tillie. Hmmm, perhaps that will be the special announcement during the party! It
might behoove me to purchase a small gift for the special occasion. Then my actions
of impatience would be considered an intuition instead, but if it happens that my
thoughts are off target, then I will assume their living arrangement remains unchanged
and I will simply present the gift as a house warming present for the cottage. Either
way, I will be prepared. As my husband says . . . I will come out smelling like a rose!
With baby all snug in my arms, Erin and I took a leisure stroll on the beach. There is
much for her to learn about coastal living; the ocean, the marshlands, and the abun-
dance of wildlife that surrounds us. It is a wonderful, educational place to raise a child.
I often close my eyes and just listen to the different sounds that are made from the
splashing of the waves hitting the shore, the squawking sounds of assorted gulls, the
chirps of sanderlings and other fowl as they perform rituals of playtime mixed with a
continual search for food. They eat almost as often as my little Erin does these days.
