Introduction

Coastal Engineering deals with various aspects including understanding of coastal processes, design of coastal structures for protection against erosion and flooding; and planning and design of coastal facilities for maritime transportation and activities. The characteristics of major oceanic processes such as wind waves, storm waves and tides are time varying in nature, so are the coastal processes associated with them. The common coastal processes, such as; transformation of waves from deep ocean to beaches, tidal hydrodynamics, sediment transport, wave setup and storm surges, that take place on any coast, causes several problems. A better understanding these coastal processes and their application in solving engineering and design problems are always of great concern for engineers and scientists, as it varies from coast to coast. This short term course is aimed to cover the various basic aspects of the coastal engineering, design procedures and their application.

Broad Objectives

The short term course is intended to introduce; the basics of various coastal processes and different numerical and physical modeling techniques to represent the coastal processes to the participants. As the application of these basics and modeling techniques in engineering practice and design is equally important, various coastal engineering case studies will also be presented to the participants.

Course Contents

The short-term course includes following topics:

Wave theories and dynamics.

Coastal processes: Theory, numerical modeling and methods of physical modeling.

Design of coastal facilities and protection measures

Coastal engineering case studies.

Teaching Faculty

The teaching faculty will constitute experts from IIT Bombay and other IITs. The core faculties include, but not limited to; Prof. M.R. Behera, Prof. R. Balaji, Prof. M.C. Deo.

Lecture Notes

Hard copies of the lecture notes or presentations will be made available at the time of registration.

Eligibility

Faculty members of engineering colleges recognized by AICTE, working in area of civil, ocean and coastal engineering, are eligible to attend the course.

Transport, Boarding & Lodging

Participants are entitled for Second Class (Sleeper Class) or III AC railway fare to and fro by the shortest route from college to IIT Bombay. All participants will be given auto fare from Kanjurmarg/Andheri to IIT on the dates of arrival and departure. Local participants will be paid second class railway fare or BEST Bus fare.

Boarding and lodging will also be provided free of cost. Accommodation will be provided in the students Hostels. Since accommodation is limited, family members of the participants cannot be accommodated.
