Coast, Karst and Kayaking Day 1 Morning arrival from Split from GTW Transfer to Rovanjska, just east of Zadar where the group is split into two for alternate activities: adventure caving and swimming. Aim - to experience the geomorphology of limestone caves After dinner the group will check into their youth hostel in the ancient walled city of Zadar Day 2 Plitvice Lakes National Park —UNESCO World Heritage Site Aim—to study tufa and travertine barrier formation in an area of outstanding beauty. Features of typical karst landscape. Morning - explore the Lower Lakes (up to 3 hours) Afternoon at Bear Sanctuary in Kuterevo A chance to meet young, enthusiastic volunteers from across Europe who care for bears which cannot be returned to the wild. An inspiring experience. Farmhouse dinner with traditional music and dancing Aim - to learn about wildlife conservation and life in a traditional rural village. Check into Konobe Jure Pansion*** in Krasno Polje— 3 nights Day 3 Rafting on the Mrežnica River An exhilarating day paddling over cascades and travertine barriers and through the canyons of this beautiful river. Inflatable kayaks ~ no experience required Day 4 North Velebit National Park Aim - to study weather patterns created by a coastal mountain range ~ rural depopulation ~ conservation of endangered species ~ karst landscapes ~ A Level field study work (if required) ~ formations of a dalmatian coastline The day will start at the Park HQ with a presentation about the ecology of the Velebit Mountains. The group will climb to Zavižan, the highest weather station in Croatia. Following a brief presentation of weather monitoring equipment, groups will conduct field study work in the Velebit Botanic Reserve. After the serious work is over, students will drop down from the mountains to the fishing village of Sveti Juraj on the Adriatic coast and enjoy several hours of swimming in the crystal clear water. Beachside restaurant.
