COAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM— CQMS —

    • Achieving efficient usage of existing coal resources

    • Optimization of power plant operation through high level of homogenisation of coal quality parameters

HOW DO WE ACHIEVE THESE OBJECTIVES?

    • Acquiring detailed knowledge of the 3D distribution of quality parameters in the deposit

    • Consideration of the coal quality in the mine planning process

    • Use of technical aids for the determination of relevant quality parameters

    OBJECTIVES OF A CQMS

MIBRAG Consulting International GmbH is an internationally and independently operating consulting company. Our goal is to help you develop and implement innovative strategies to master the ever-growing challenges of the mining industry. With rising quality requirements the improvement of Coal Quality Management Systems (CQMS) is of great significance. Wor-king closely with MIBRAG for over 20 years we gained essential experience and deep insights into coal quality management. This makes us a highly reliable partner in achieving and excee-ding your coal quality goals.

    • Compliance with contractually established quality parameters

    • Minimization of environmental pollution• Profit optimization

    • Initial homogenization of the coal quali-ties prior to delivery to the power plants by means of suitable stockpile technologies

    • Methods of stockpile management• Continuous monitoring and analysis of the

coal quality management process• Training of employees

MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE CQMS PROCESS

The development of a Coal Quality Management System is performed within a combination of geological modelling and mine planning stages. Planning is essential for preparing and organi-zing the production of quality coal and proceeds in the following stages:

    Planning

    • Exploration and determination of coal qua-lities and reserves for the whole mining field

    • Geological modelling• Planning of individual stages of mining ta-

king into account the required range of raw coal qualities accordingly

    • Long-term planning takes into considerati-on the development of the deposit for some decades and longer, and largely determines the strategic approach.

    • Detailed short- and mid-term planning con-tinuously breaks down overall targets to mi-ning areas of interest and at the same time builds the basis for a functional CQMS.

    Production

Continuous monitoring and controlling of the ongoing production process is performed in the following stages:

This way of organizing the production process leads to homogenised coal.Another benefit of using stockpiles is the decoupling of the coal production from the delivery process.

MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE CQMS PROCESS

    • Stacking: Monitoring and controlling of the stacking of the inhomogeneous coal of vary-ing qualities to ensure that the required qua-lity standards are met during the reclaiming process.

    • Reclaiming: During the reclaiming process the coal of varying qualities is blended in a way to ensure a homogenization of the coal quality.

    • Excavation process: Recording and eva-luation of relevant parameters showing how much coal is excavate where and in what quality.

    • Transport from mine to stockyard: Obser-vation of the material flow from the excava-tion point to the point of destination.

    Analysis

During production, ongoing processes have to be controlled to suit goals determined during planning with corrective action taken as required. For this purpose, operations have to be monitored continuously and checked against planning targets.

    • Analysis of data obtained during the pro-duction process as indicators of produc-tive capacity, qualities, plant availability and equipment failures provides extra in-formation which can then be used again at the planning stage.

    • Continuous and prompt evaluation of pro-duction process data makes it possible to react to out-of-line situations at once and thus optimize the flow of production.

MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE CQMS PROCESS

    • With the help of the analysis of the produc-tion process and quality outcome mid– und longterm plans can be adjusted accordingly.

    • To further optimize the coal quality manage-ment permanent monitoring and training of the staff is required.

EXPERTISE THROUGH LONGTERM WORK WITH MIBRAG

    • The need to develop a better CQMS arose in the 1990 when sales patterns changed. Stricter requirements on efficiency and en-vironmental protection extremely narrowed the range of coal qualities allowed to be used in modern power plants at the time.

    • To make optimal use of coal reserves and deposits it became necessary to mine dif-ferent grades of coal selectively and to

homogenize the quality parameters of the coal sold.

    • MIBRAG operates two open-pit mines with different customer structures enabling us to gain expertise on varying processes.

We were able to acquire expert knowledge in coal quality management due to the fact that we have worked with MIBRAG on improving their whole production process for over 20 years.

EXAMPLE OF IMPLEMENTING A CQMS USING STRATA AT MIBRAG

Our main goal was to develop a strategy to ensure consistently meeting strict quality stan-dards to guarantee security of supply.

    Cross section of STRATA stockpile

e digram shows clearly the eciency of homogenesation of the coal by using STRATA.

Implementation through: • Determination of a sufficiently huge stock-

pile capacity and the necessary number of subdivisions to achieve flexible stacking and reclaiming processes that enable a de-coupling of the production from the sales process and make the whole process highly error-resistent

    • Optimization of STRATA stacking to achieve a high grade of homogenization

    • Developement of software to monitor every step of the coal production process. Imple-mentation of suitable online measurements to continuously monitor coal quality parameter

Eect of homogenization by using a suitable stockpile technology
