Description: Coal preparation has become an essential step in preparing coals for both domestic and export markets. As such, it is important for mine managers to understand the purpose, function and limitations of these facilities. This four-day short course describes the operational features of the processing equipment and practices used in coal preparation. The presentations provide background information that describes (i) why coal preparation is necessary, (ii) methods for determining coal cleanability, and (iii) what types of plant layouts are required. Specific topics to be covered in the workshop include sizing operations (screens, sieves and classifying cyclones), cleaning operations (dense medium separators, water-based separators, and froth flotation), and dewatering operations (centrifugal dryers, screenbowl centrifuges, vacuum filters, belt presses, and thickeners). For each topic, suggested operating practices are provided for equipment operation and maintenance. Registration: The registration fee is as follows:

Corporate Members sending 5 or more individuals $1295

CPSA Members $1395 Non-members (includes a 1-year CPSA membership) $1495

The fee includes course notes, coffee breaks and lunches. Fees may be paid by check, or online at www.coalprepsociety.org via PayPal or credit card. Make checks payable to the Coal Preparation Society of America (CPSA) and mail to:

About the Instructors: Gerald (Jerry) H. Luttrell is the E. Morgan Massey Professor of Mining and Minerals Engineering at Virginia Tech. He received his B.S. (1980), M.S. (1982) and Ph.D. (1986) degrees in mining and minerals engineering from Virginia Tech. His expertise lies in the areas of separation technologies for the mineral and coal industries as well as pioneering new fields of technology in the environmentally clean processing of mined materials. Dr. Luttrell has 18 patents, many of which are in commercial use. His patents address three important industrial problems in mining: fine particle flotation, coarse particle flotation, and fine particle dewatering. He has completed projects worth over $14 million, obtained 15 process patents and authored more than 150 scholarly publications in journals and proceedings, as well as more than 180 technical reports. His research has contributed to the development of innovative technologies for coal preparation and mineral processing. Dr. Luttrell was recently elected into the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. He holds numerous awards, to include the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers' Nicholls and Aplan awards, the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America's Stephen McCann Educational Excellence Award and is a recipient of the Robert H. Richards award. He has twice served as a Henry Krumb lecturer, and is a five-time recipient of the department's Outstanding Faculty Award, a four-time recipient of Virginia Tech's Academy of Teaching Excellence Award and a recipient of the College of Engineering Dean's Award for Excellence in Public Service. Rick Q. Honaker is professor and chair of the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky (UK). He received his B.S. (1986), M.S. (1988) and Ph.D. (1992) degrees in mining and minerals engineering from Virginia Tech. He served as an assistant and associate professor of mining engineering at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale from 1991 to 1999. In 1999, he received the MPD Outstanding Young Engineer Award. Honaker joined the faculty at UK as an associate professor in 2000. Honaker has developed an extensive research program in coal and mineral processing with an emphasis in fine particle separation processes. His research findings have been reported in over 120 technical publications and 25 reports. He received the 2008 Frank F. Aplan award for his contributions to coal and minerals processing. He has conducted workshops for industrial professionals and served as an invited lecturer for international seminars in India, China, Columbia, Turkey, Canada and Australia. Honaker has been a member of the Coal & Energy Executive Board and was program chair for the 2007 SME Annual meeting. He is currently a member of the SME Education and Professional Development Strategic Committee. He was awarded the MEF Distinguished Professorship in 2005 and promoted to the rank of full professor in 2006. In recognition of his contributions to mining engineering education, he received the 2003 Stephen McCann Award for Excellence in Education from the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America.
