Celebrating Our Tenth Year Fall / Winter 2012 Collection00

In 2002 a group of friends got together to start a company that reflected their shared vision: headwear should be more than an accessory. At the time, hats, knit beanies, and the like were little more than a commodity that brands put their logo on. Coal chose not to. We saw an opportunity to provide the market with accessories that took fit, fashion, and function equally seriously, and looked at headwear as an extension of you, your identity and your lifestyle.

Design wasand still isthe main factor of every style. Not only from the color, yarn / material type, or subtle branding, but to how the style actually fi t and looked when worn. No longer was the beanie a standard size and shape that each company decorated with different patterns, colors and giant logos. It was now all about design, uncompromising attention to detail, and superior components.

Ten years later, we remain dedicated to making headwear more than an accessory. Its been an epic journey. Thanks for joining us.

Mission.

Welcome.

Coal was founded on the belief that headwear is more than an accessory. Its part of you, your identity, and your lifestyle. We build this idea into each of our designs by using quality materials and exacting detail, and crafting styles that are as unique as you are.

This logo throughout the catalog indicates a Coal Considered style. A classically-inspired collection of headwear where no detail is overlooked. In our Fall /Winter 2012 offering we introduce new innovative designs and even fi ner materials, from pure Mongolian cashmere to bamboo cashmere blend and domestic wool felt.

Materials.

USA Wool Felt Our US-made wool felt hats are made by a manufacturer that has

been around for over 100 years. They have perfected the art of

making wool felt fedoras, bowlers and other highly crafted head-

wear. The wool they use comes from Texas and goes through a

rigorous process where the raw wool is fi rst formed into loose cone

shaped bodies from there the cones are treated with pressure and

hot water repeatedly. The combination of the pressure and heat

begins to felt the wool fi bers. The felt becomes tighter and denser

as the process continues. Once the bodies are ready for use they

are blocked by hand, the brims trimmed and shaped, and the fi nal

trims, lining and labeling applied.

Cashmere Our cashmere comes from goats that reside in the mountain-

ous plateaus of Mongolia. At this high altitude and in the harsh

weather conditions, the goat grows a thick coat of soft hair that

compared to other fi bershas more insulating power, providing

warmth without weight and bulk. The cost of cashmere comes

from limited supply and the diffi culty to gather the fl eece.

Bamboo CashmereOur bamboo/cashmere blend is the meeting of two silky and soft

fi bers. The viscose material that is derived from bamboo has a silk-

like drape and softness. It is then blended with a touch of cashmere

that gives the yarn a warmer hand and even more softness.

Merino wool Merino is an amazing yarn with the ability to be both refi ned in

look and tough in performance. Merino wool is not only fi ner and

softer than other wool, it also has technical properties akin to what

most people look for in synthetic performance fi bers, such as

wicking and insulation.

LambswoolLambswool is different from other wool in that wool fi bers are

shorter, making them softer. Lambswool characteristically is softer

and more slippery in-hand, compared to other wool, making it a

great fi ber for beanies.

Lambswool Angora Our lambswool/angora blend allows the silky angora fi ber to be

used in a variety of applications. Angora on its own is incredibly

soft, even softer than cashmere but not as sturdy, making it

diffi cult to spin into yarn. Blending it with lambswoolplus a

touch of nylonallows this fi ber to be made into beanies, scarves

and gloves with years of wearability.

Silky AcrylicSilky acrylic differs from regular acrylic, in that during the yarn

spinning process it goes through additional steps to impart the

yarn with amazing softness, a silky texture, and a bit of sheen.
