Power Technology
Our Portfolio
3 coal fired power stations: Ratcliffe-on-Soar, Ironbridge and Kingsnorth
Largest coal fired utility in UK (2005) – 4.9GW power
Environmental concerns New units at Kingsnorth
5 gas power stations: Connah’s Quay, Cottam Development Centre, Enfield, Killingholme and Taylors Lane
Gas fired combined heat and power plant: Grain Underground gas storage facility
Plus other power plants – wind, hydro and biomass

Clean Fossil Fuels
Technologies which convert coal, gas & oil to energy with reduced emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Existing Plant
Low NOx burners fitted to all coal fired power stations to reduce any oxide of nitrogen emissions, which are associated with acid rain
All coal used at E.ON sites has a low sulphur content Biomass co-firing projects currently running at all three coal
fired stations in the UK. Flue Gas Desulphurisation unit fitted at Ratcliffe-on-Soar
which removes 90% of sulphur dioxide from the fumes
Areas of Research Cleaner Coal Combustion - Plant
efficiency improvements, advanced coal-fired supercritical boilers, fluidised bed combustion
Capture & Storage of Carbon Dioxide - pre & post combustion, capture of and transportation & long-term storage of CO2
Innovative Technologies - Integrated gasification Combined cycle, fuel cells, advanced combined cycle gas turbines.
Legislation & Standards BSI & Foreign Standards BSI Update Journal Legislation – UK, EU IHS
Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD)European Directive to reduce emissions of Sulphur Dioxide,
Nitrogen Oxide and dust from Large Combustion Plant
Information on LCPD available from:DEFRA, EUROPA and E.ON UK ‘s website
