sportscotland UKCC coach education fundingsportscotland recognises the importance of new coaches coming into sport and the need for accessible, affordable coaching courses to be available to them. 2013/14 sees the continuation of UKCC level 1 funding to support the recruitment of new coaches and the continued development of existing coaches.

Candidates are required to complete an application form and meet set criteria to access funding towards the cost of UKCC level 1 endorsed qualifications. Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria can access funding of up to £150 or 50% per person of the course fee, whichever is lower. group applications can be submitted when two or more individuals from the same organisation/club are applying for a course. Please note application forms should be submitted 4 weeks in advance of course date.

ClubSport Stirling fundingMembers of local clubs affiliated to ClubSport Stirling can apply for scholarship funding (in conjunction with sportscotland subsidy) to cover the cost of sport specific courses. Please note application forms should be submitted 4 weeks in advance of course date.

One of the key priorities of the work done by Active Stirling and ClubSport Stirling is to develop local coaches. After all, the quality of opportunities for local people will depend heavily on the quality of the people delivering within schools, clubs and the community.

First Aid courses

1 day First Aid course (6 hours) This course covers details from the 4 hour emergency course and will build on the fundamentals of first aid. You will learn about how to recognise a wider variety of illnesses and injuries and how to provide safe first aid treatment (including infant and child resuscitation). You will learn how to assess a casualty in the event of an accident or illness and therefore make the correct next steps to help.

2 day First Aid (12 hours)This course covers the content of the 1 day first aid course and covers what is expected in most ngB award schemes in sports. The course will cover in more depth a wide variety of illnesses and injuries that as a first aider may come across. You will also learn how to incident manage a scene with multiple casualties or multiple injuries. The practice of scenario management will require the students to roll play incidents. This will take place on day two and will be in an environment suitable for the candidate’s requirements. For example outdoor environments for those who are involved in adventure activities such as walking, biking and paddle sports.

Disability sport courses

Coaching footballers with a disabilityThis 6 hour course is open to all interested parties aged 16 and over, experienced or otherwise, who work with or have an interest in working with footballers with disabilities. Using practical and workshop teaching methods the course is designed to give coaches an insight into best practice when delivering coaching sessions to groups of players with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.

Hockey Hockey leaders leaders course is a 6 hour introduction to the basic skills and small sided games for hockey and is targeted at volunteers, senior pupils, parents and teachers to increase their knowledge of the sport. Minimum age is 14 years old.

Lifeguard course national pool lifeguard course with AEDThe nPlQ qualification will teach you both the practical and theoretical skills to work as a lifeguard. This is a brilliant qualification to get you started in a career in the leisure industry and to work in a team environment. The course also covers the use of an automated external defrillator. There is a minimum hourly requirement to achieve the qualification so 100% attendance is compulsory. Before the start of any course each candidate must be 16 years of age and needs to meet the following basic fitness criteria -

Rugby ready practical The rugby ready practical courses aim to increase awareness of all aspects of safety in the game. The course is a minimum standard for all coaches and teachers in Scotland. Candidates must be aged 16 or over. A course will run at each of Stirling’s club prior to the start of the season. Please contact Craig Bolan (Active Stirling Rugby Development Officer) for course dates.

UKCC level 2 (must attend all 3 dates) The aim of the UKCC level 2 course is to enable you to prepare for, deliver and review coaching sessions to a group of players, as a club coach or teacher. It is a three-day course and features a mixture of practical-based exercises and home study tasks.

Pre – requisites -Candidates must possess a UKCC level 1certificate in coaching rugby union, IRB level 2 or be a qualified PE teacher with an appropriate rugby background.

Swimming UKCC level 1 swim teacher course The aim of the course is to introduce candidates to the basic principles of teaching and develop effective swimming teaching skills. Once qualified, the holder will be able to assist teaching of a limited range of basic skills under the supervision of a qualified UKCC Teacher/Coach.

Pre requisites -Candidates must be at least 16 years of age at the commencement of the learning programme. Candidates must be current members of Scottish Swimming prior to the course starting.

Volleyball Introduction to volleyball learn how to develop basic passing movements for overhand and underhand passing, and how to introduce and develop the three touch volleyball sequence. This course examines the role of the coach, and the importance of the safety aspects of the coaching process.

• Courses are geared towards individuals who are 16 years old and above. If you are younger than this, please contact Cheryl Willet (Coaching Development Officer) to discuss what opportunities are available to you.

• There is a minimum and maximum number of participants on each course. To ensure that you get a place on a course, contact Active Stirling well in advance of the course date.

• Candidates attending the sports specific courses should come ready for practical sessions indoor and outdoor, and bring refreshments with them.

• Booking forms should be completed and forwarded onto Active Stirling in all instances to secure your booking.

If you or your club cancel a course booking and give us less than 2 working days’ notice then a cancellation fee is payable. Please note this applies to All courses including any free courses you may have booked.
