INSTALLER Device Unique PVC/aluminum pipe with SS cable handles to roll WW tarp onto and off.

This allows 2 people to easily install a WW tarp in less than 30 seconds. Saves time and backs.

Tuffy® WINDSCREEN

America’s toughest windscreen because it’s made of VIPOL® Matrix, a mesh that contains over 50% more micro-fibers than conventional windscreens. Multi-reinforced edging is also VIPOL Matrix to eliminate the problem of grommets pulling out. All corners and ends are double lock-stitched to eliminate the unraveling problem of fully chain-stitched windscreen. Backed by 5 year factory warranty, Tuffy W/S is used at all levels of baseball…even MLB.

Chroma-Bond® IMPRINTINGOur double coat process fully masks the underlying fabric color, unlike digital printing that can leave an unsightly white back-side. Images are highly weather and spike resistant, last as long as the fabric, and do not fade like digital images. Available on our vinyl, Vipol Matrix, and PVC mesh products.

No stakes needed since its corners, front, and mid-top are self-weighted. Made of VIPOL® Matrix with vinyl weight sleeves. Available in 20 colors and same sizes as BP Zone® Protector above. Already used by MLB and NCAA teams. Perfect for natural or artificial turf.

Tuffy®

BALLASTEDWINDSCREEN

Protects Chain Link Fences from Wind DamagePATENTED technology using engineered 5’ x 6’ windscreen units with weighted PVC pipe inserted in bottom pocket, attached to fence only at top. High winds open the unit to let damaging velocities thru. Installing alternately on both sides of fence allows half of it to open up no matter the wind’s direction. Can be intermixed with regular Tuffy Windscreen to reduce wind pressure on any chain link fence. Built-in hook & loop strips at top allow one person to roll up and secure unit in less than 30 seconds, saving costly labor in last minute pre-storm preparations (and improves tourney viewing). With units rolled up, net wind force may approach 93% less than that on same fence with fully attached windscreen. HUNDREDS HAVE BEEN IN USE BY SCHOOLS, GOVERNMENT, AND PRIVATE CLUBS FOR UP TO FIVE YEARS. Fully tested and ready to protect your fences.

The American Baseball Coaches Association travels to the Windy City for its 68th annual conven-tion, which is being held Jan. 3-6

at the Chicago Hyatt Regency. More than 4,000 coaches are expected to attend, and members are encouraged to arrive no later than Thursday, Jan. 3, as committee and division meetings, as well as exhibits, will open the conven-tion that day.

As always, the clinic session will be the heart of the event, and ABCA Second Vice-President Scott Berry has arranged an outstanding line-up of coaching clinic speakers, who will begin their sessions on Friday, Jan. 4. Among those scheduled to speak are Andy Lopez, from the University of Arizona; Sal Fasano of the Toronto Blue Jays; and Darin Erstad of the University of Nebraska.

In the exhibit hall, about 300 compa-nies are expected to display state-of-the-art equipment, including coaching aids, apparel, field equipment, pitching machines, and software. Many exhibi-tors will be showcasing new products being displayed for the first time. Other convention highlights include the Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet Friday, Jan. 4, at 6:00 p.m., and the Honors Luncheon on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 12:15 p.m.

ABCA EthiCs AwArd

Bailey, Saunders Share Prestigious HonorThe ABCA believes that the highest call-ing of a baseball coach is to teach life’s lessons and model character traits of honesty, integrity, respect, and personal responsibility, and that a coach’s moral and ethical conducts—on and off the field—deeply influences players. The ABCA Ethics in Coaching Award honors coaches who display these traits. This year’s recipients are Pat Bailey, Assistant Coach at Oregon State University, and Tim Saunders, Head Coach at Dublin (Ohio) Coffman High School.

Pat Bailey is enter-ing his sixth season at Oregon State University, where he’s worked most closely with the hitters and outfielders. He has helped guide Oregon State to postseason play in each of the last four seasons.

Before accepting the position at OSU, Bailey spent 12 years as the Head Coach at George Fox University, where he

established the program as one of the best in the Northwest Conference and at the NCAA Division III national level. He led GFU to the 2004 NCAA Division III title, the school’s first in any sport. The Bruins won or shared eight NWC titles during his tenure and never had a losing season.

Bailey earned two letters in baseball at North Idaho College then two more as a starting outfielder at the University of Idaho, where he was captain his senior season. He has also worked at the Pro Holiday Camps and at the Pro Seattle Camp Experience in Washington.

tim saunders just completed his 24th season as the Head Coach at Dublin Coffman High School where he has led the team to one state title, two regional titles, five district championships and 12 league crowns. His overall record, which includes four

years as Head Coach at Meigs (Ohio) High School, stands at 471-296.

His teams have appeared in the state regionals (final 16) five times. In 2000, his team made it to the state semi-finals, and Saunders was named the ABCA District 4 Coach of the Year as

well as the Columbus Dispatch and the Ohio Coaches Association Coach of the Year. In 2001, his team went on to win the Division I State championship.

In 1997, the Dublin Coffman playing field was chosen by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association (BCA) as the District 4 Field of the Year and National Region V Field of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Turface Inc. In 2007 it was voted the BCA National Field of the Year.

Saunders attended the University of Rio Grande from 1978 to 1981 and played outfield for the Redmen for two years. His senior year, he did his student teach-ing at Portsmouth (Ohio) High School and became the assistant coach for the team that finished as state runner-up.

He has long been active with USA Baseball and was the United States Olympic Committee’s Developmental Coach of the Year in 2001 for Baseball after guiding the 2001 Youth National Team to the Pan American Championships in Monterrey, Mexico. His work with USA Baseball also included stints as a coach at the Olympic Sports

Festival in 1995 and 1997 and with the USA Youth National teams that won gold medals in 1998, 1999, and 2000.

Saunders is a former president and cur-rent board member of the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association. He is currently Secretary and President for the Central District Baseball Coaches Association and is a recommending scout for the Cincinnati Reds. Saunders is also on the National ABCA and BCA High School All-American Committees. In 2000, he was selected as the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Sportsmanship, Integrity and Ethics award recipient.

Six New Members Welcomed In 2013During the 2013 Convention in Chicago, the ABCA will welcome six new members into its Hall of Fame. The Class of 2013 consists of Bill Aker, Northern Kentucky University; Dan Gallagher, Fordham University; Woody Hunt, Cumberland University; Ralph Rago, Roosevelt H.S., El Capitan H.S., and David H.S.; Joe Roberts,

Armstrong Atlantic State University; and Kent Shelly, Johnson County Community College. Learn more about the inductees below.

Bill Aker is recog-nized as “The Father of Northern Kentucky University Baseball.” He built the baseball pro-gram at then Northern Kentucky State College from scratch starting in 1971. Aker led the Norse for 29 years, compiling a record that included 807 wins,

four regional Coach of the Year awards, and two World Series appearances. In 1977, Aker’s Norse won a school-record 49 games and was ranked as high as seventh in the NCAA Division II national poll. In 1974, his team celebrated its first-ever regional championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships. Aker won at least 30 games 11 times and had four 40-win seasons.

ABCA CONVENTION PREVIEW

No matter what sport you coach or how talented your athletes are, they need to be consuming high-octane fuels for peak performance. Too many high school athletes skip breakfast, make lousy food choices at lunch and then wonder why they are struggling to focus and perform on the field or court.

One of the easiest and most convenient ways to feed high school athletes is through their school cafeteria. Having athletes stop by the cafeteria and grab a whole-grain bagel, low fat yogurt and a piece of fruit for breakfast starts their engine humming. Having them eat lunch on the school campus as opposed to skipping lunch or making lousy food choices will help them store energy in their muscles for afternoon workouts or games.

If you haven’t noticed, school cafeterias have made some changes. Through the Healthy-Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, school cafeterias are serving more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low fat and fat free milk in chef-inspired recipes --exactly what athletes should be consuming in order to fuel their athletic performance. Fruits and vegetables provide the vitamins and minerals athletes need to maintain a healthy immune system, while whole grains like breads and pasta and rice can provide the energy they need to perform, especially when it comes to the second half of the game. Drinking low fat milk provides calcium to help their bones grow and helps with muscle contraction for speed and endurance. When these foods are served with a good source of protein, athletes have the fuels and nutrients they need to perform at their best.

Teaming up with school food service can be a great solution in fueling high school athletes. Many school food service staff and managers take pride in their school and enjoy working with their school athletic teams. Coaches should take the opportunity to work with their school cafeterias to provide foods and meals that help athletes perform as well as encouraging them to make good food choices from their school cafeteria. School food service managers can provide “training tables” for their high school athletes and can also

plan and provide pre-game meals for teams, along with snacks for away games at prices much lower than you can purchase at a local store. Additionally, if your teams practice in the morning before school, work with the school cafeteria manager to have a sack breakfast that players can purchase. This means your athletes won’t show up to class with an empty tank.

You’ve helped coach your athlete to be the best they can be. Now, make sure that proper nutrition becomes part of their game.

ABCA CONVENTION PREVIEW

Circle No. 103

Our annual American Baseball Coaches Association convention is a wonderful way to set the tone for your upcoming

season. The ABCA will be returning to Chicago, Ill., for the 68th Annual Baseball Convention held at the Hyatt Regency Chicago on Wacker Drive from January 3-6, 2013.

Many factors go into making this the largest and greatest coaches’ convention in the world, but none play a more significant role than the outstanding clinics that will occur from January 4th to the 6th. Second Vice-President Scott Berry has organized another brilliant lineup of speakers. Third Vice-President, Ed Blankmeyer, has a great group of high

school speakers as well. The clinics are always educational, informative, and motivational … you don’t want to miss them!!! In addition to the clinic sessions, approximately 300 vendors will be sharing their ideas and displaying everything you can think of dealing with the game of baseball!

The convention will begin on Thursday, January 3rd with business meetings of each division (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, High School, International, and Youth) gathering to discuss and decide upon relevant issues and rule changes within their respective group. I invite you to volunteer or “get involved” in your division of the ABCA. There are many different ways you can help. Share your talents and expertise! We have many incredible men who have shared their gifts and visions to better our organization and the game of baseball.

I would also like to extend an invitation to all coaches and guests to

attend the 2013 Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet and the Honors Luncheon. These are both marvelous events that recognize people who have made significant contributions to our game. I invite you to join us at these special events in celebrating their achievements!

To all coaches of the ABCA—youth, high school, college, and international—continue to challenge yourselves and be great leaders for the players you coach. This game of baseball, along with your direction, will prepare your players to be successful in the bigger game of life and how to deal with those tough times.

The ABCA family looks forward to seeing you in Chicago!

Dan Gallagher direct-ed the Fordham base-ball program for 21 seasons, winning over 500 games. Included in his coaching span are seven league cham-pionships, four ECAL titles, and five NCAA Tournament berths.

Prior to coaching at Fordham, Coach

Gallagher coached clubs in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and then at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, N.Y., where he compiled a winning percentage of better than .800 for his high school coaching career. In 2007, Gallagher was inducted into the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame.

Woody Hunt has been the head coach of the Cumberland University Bulldogs for 31 seasons and is one of only six NAIA coaches to regis-ter 1,000 career victo-ries with a 1,362-565-3 record. The Bulldogs have appeared in 11 NAIA World Series, including five of the

last nine seasons, claiming national championships in 2004 and 2010 as well as runner-up finishes in 1995 and 2006.

Cumberland has won 18 conference championships under Hunt, posting 22 seasons with 40 or more victories, including 18 of the last 23 years, and has won 50 or more games eight times. Hunt has been awarded 17 Coach of the Year honors, including the 2006 and 2010 ABCA/Rawlings National Coach of the Year awards.

Ralph Rago has coached baseball at the youth, high school, junior college, colle-giate, and internation-al level for 54 years. His coaching career started at Roosevelt High School in Fresno, Calif. He then moved to El Capitan High School in Merced,

Calif., and then to Davis (Calif.) High School. In his 27 years of high school coaching, his record was 400-195-5.

From 2005 to 2009, Rago was assistant coach at Solano Community College and is currently assisting ABCA Hall of Fame coach Guy Anderson at Cordova High School in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

Joe Roberts currently ranks as the leading active NCAA Division II coach in victories and is second all-time in wins. In his 33 years as head coach at Armstrong Atlantic State University, he has posted an overall record of 1,291-623 while averaging over 40 wins per year and

posting 33 consecutive winning seasons.

During his career, the Pirates have become a perennial Division II contender. At one point the Pirates were ranked in 110 straight polls over seven seasons. They advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series in 1988, 1989, and 1994. The 1990 squad ranked number one nationally every week of the season.

Roberts has been selected for a Coach of the Year award nine times, including Regional Coach of the Year three times. In 2010, he became only the fifth college baseball coach ever inducted into the Georgia Dugout Hall of Fame.

Kent Shelley has been the head baseball coach at Johnson County Community College since 1987. The win-ningest coach in JCCC history, he has amassed a 759-476-1 mark leading five teams to Eastern Sub-Regional championships and

three squads to NJCAA Region VI titles. In 2008, he led his team to the program’s first JUCO World Series appearance.

Lefty Gomez AwArd

Madison Recognized For ContributionsThe Lefty Gomez Award is one of the most prestigious awards in all of amateur baseball. Named after the great Lefty Gomez, this award is presented by the American Baseball Coaches Association to an individual who has distinguished

himself amongst his peers and has contrib-uted significantly to the game of baseball locally, nationally, and internationally. The award is presented each year at the ABCA Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year banquet. Keith Madison, former University of Kentucky

coach, is this year’s recipient of the ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award.

Madison is being recognized for his knowledge, integrity, and passion for the sport of baseball. He is the win-ningest coach in the history of Kentucky baseball and the third-winningest coach in SEC history. In 1978, he became the youngest head baseball coach at the Division I level when he was named coach at the University of Kentucky at the age of 26. During his 25 seasons at Kentucky, Madison won 737 games while coaching 85 players who were drafted or signed professional contract, including 17 major league players.

Madison has been an active member of the ABCA. He was President in 2000 and currently sits on the ABCA Board of Directors. He is a member of the ABCA Hall of Fame as well as the Kentucky High School Baseball Hall of Fame and the University of Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame. Madison is currently the National Director of Baseball for SCORE International, which arranges mission trips both inside and outside the United States.

Honors LuncHeon

Meritorious Service Award WinnersEach year, the Honors Luncheon is one of the convention highlights since it allows the ABCA to pay special trib-ute to some very special people. This year, the ABCA will again have some prominent individuals receiving awards, including Meritorious Service Awards.

baseball writer, cover-ing events such as the College World Series, Pan American Games and the Olympics.

He served as the magazine’s managing editor from 1993 to 1997 before moving to suburban Chicago with his family and spending

three years as a senior editor at STATS, Inc. Since returning to Baseball America in 2000, his main focuses have been eval-uating prospects (including editing BA’s annual Prospect Handbook) and covering the amateur draft (including broadcast work with ESPN and MLB Network). He’s the recipient of the 1995 USA Baseball media award and the 2000 Wilbur Snypp Award, presented by National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Merl Eberly lived most of his life in Clarinda, Iowa, where he gradu-ated from high school and junior college with a teaching degree. It was during those years that his love of athletics was developed under some very caring coach-es whose influence was evident in the man he

became. He was a four-sport athlete in high school, played basketball in junior college, and minor league baseball for the Chicago White Sox.

His association with the Clarinda A’s baseball program began as a player in 1954. He served as manager from 1961 to 1997 and was General Manager until his death in 2011. During his tenure as manager the team posted a 1501-591 record for a wining percentage of .717. The team won the National Baseball Congress World Series in 1981 and fin-ished third in 1976. Over 300 of his play-ers played professional baseball, with 30 making it to the major league level, including Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. Eberly worked for the Clarinda Herald Journal for nearly 30 years, starting in the back shop, then writing sports, and eventually becoming an advertising salesman and stockholder.

Jim Quinlan has been National Program Coordinator of American Legion Baseball since 1986. A native of West Branch, Iowa, his involvement with the American Legion baseball program began in 1970 when he played for the local American Legion team in his county. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S.

Marine Corps in 1975, he began to help the local American Legion team.

In 1986, he was tapped for the posi-tion of National Program Coordinator for American Legion Baseball and moved to Indianapolis where

he resides today. Under Quinlan’s stew-ardship, American Legion baseball has grown from 2,500 teams to nearly 5,000 today. During his tenure the program went online allowing Legion teams to register, schedule games, and promote their tournaments via the internet.

Quinlan was instrumental in creat-ing a baseball scholarship trust that annually awards nearly $50,000. These scholarships are based on academics, community service and financial needs. Also during his tenure, Shelby, N.C., was named as the new permanent home of the American Legion World Series. Attendance during this five-day, eight-team, double-elimination tournament averages over 100,000.

Corbin To Lead AbCA In 2013

tim corbin is heading into his 11th season as the Head Coach at Vanderbilt University. During his tenure, Corbin has turned the Commodores into a national power and taken the program to unprecedented suc-cess leading Vanderbilt to the College World

Series for the first time in 2011 and winning a share of the Southeastern Conference title along the way.

The Commodores’ magical run to Omaha saw several school records equaled or passed. VU won 54 games to match the school record set in 2007 and set an SEC record with 12 players selected in the Major League Baseball draft.

Corbin’s overall record of 411-217 (.654) is second all-time in terms of wins at Vanderbilt, and first in terms of winning percentage for coaches with 100 or more games. His 411 wins at Vanderbilt are the second-most of any active SEC coach

During Corbin’s tenure, the Commodores have had eight players selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft, including five picks in the top 10. David Price was the first overall pick in the 2007 draft and Pedro Alvarez was the second pick in 2008 marking the first time one school had players taken so high in consecutive years.

Birkbeck Named Top Assistant

Mike Birkbeck, Associate Head Coach at Kent State University, has been named the 2012 winner of the ABCA/Baseball America Assistant Coach of the Year award. Birkbeck is entering his 17th season as the Pitching Coach for the Golden Flashes.

In 2012, Birkbeck helped guide a young, retooled Kent State pitching staff to a school-record 47 victories, the Mid-American Conference championship, MAC Tournament title, NCAA Gary Regional crown, Eugene Super Regional title and a berth in the school’s first-ever College World Series. The 2012 pitching staff featured three professional draft-ees, including MAC Pitcher of the Year David Starn, who was also selected as the MAC Tournament Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season.

The Golden Flashes have now won six MAC regular season titles, eight MAC tournament crowns and have appeared in eight NCAA Regional Tournaments during Birkbeck’s tenure, including twelve cham-pionships in the last thirteen seasons. In those 16 seasons, KSU has won 584 games, an average of 37 wins per year and have now won 30 or more games in a season 14 consecutive campaigns.

Birkbeck assists in the evaluation and recruitment of pitchers and is directly responsible for the pitching staff’s off-season winter individual throwing work-out programs. He also coordinates the

Vision Training With the Pros

Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Mad-don uses the Junior Hack Attack Pitching Machine to implement vision training with major league hitters. At a 33-foot distance, he adjusts the Junior Hack Attack to use a small ball that comes up at an angle and reaches hit-ters at a high speed.

Maddon’s theory is that the hitter has to focus on the smaller ball, and short-en the stroke to get the head of the bat to the ball. The objective is hard focus and quick connection to the ball.

Maddon has been using this drill for many seasons, believing that hitters rapidly adjust their swing to make con-tact. His insight has led to this novel way of teaching high-profile hitters. “Their entire ‘hack’ improves without me saying a word,” Maddon says. “It takes about three rounds and then instead of the initial frustration, it’s a line drive.”

Quick First-stepsDevelop strong first-step quickness with the Power Stepper™. This is a great tool to develop strong lateral movement for players who want to enhance

their game. Start with intermediate resistance to teach and perfect skill—then graduate to advanced and elite resistance. Padded ankle cuffs are extra-long to accommodate more us-ers. Each unit includes a 10-inch tube and padded cuffs with Velcro® straps. The price for the Power Stepper ranges from $20 to $25.Power Systems, Inc. • 800-321-6975www.powersystems.com Circle No. 524

All in the hipsHitting for power? Try the Power Bag. It was designed to teach hitters to use their lower half when hit-ting the ball—not just to rotate the hips, but

to use them as a power source when driving through the ball. The Power Bag allows hitters to power through contact and finish the swing. Use good point-of-contact mechanics and the bag will swing higher for a visual reward. Use lazy hips, rolled wrists, or swing around the ball and the bag will not move nearly as much.
