The American Baseball Coaches Association heads to America’s heartland for its 66th annual convention, which is being

held Jan. 6-9 at the Nashville Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. Approximately 4,000 coaches are expect-ed to attend, with committee and division meetings, as well as exhibits opening the festivities.

ABCA Second Vice-President John Schaly has arranged an outstanding line-up of coaching clinic speakers, who will begin their sessions on Friday, Jan. 7. Among those scheduled to speak are Ray Tanner, University of South Carolina; Jack Leggett, Clemson University; Kevin McMullan, University of Virginia; Tim Corbin, Vanderbilt University; Jim Tracy, Colorado Rockies; and former major league pitcher Kent Tekulve.

In the exhibit hall, around 300 compa-nies are expected to display state-of-the-art equipment, including coaching aids, apparel, field equipment, pitching machines, and software. Many will show-case new products being displayed for the first time. Other convention high-lights include the Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet Friday, Jan. 7 and the Honors Luncheon on Saturday, Jan. 8.

Steve Farley, Sam Riggleman Earn ABCA Ethics AwardLongtime and highly respected baseball coaches Steve Farley of Butler University and Sam Riggleman of Spring Arbor University, are the recipients of this year’s ABCA Ethics in Coaching Award

and will be honored during the 2011 Convention. The ABCA believes that the highest calling of a baseball coach is to teach life’s lessons and model the char-acter traits of honesty, integrity, respect, and personal responsibility, and that a coach’s moral and ethical conduct—on and off the field—deeply influences play-ers. The ABCA Ethics in Coaching Award Committee, chaired by Tom O’Connell, believes that Coach Farley and Coach Riggleman best represent these principles.

Riggleman begins his 35th year as a col-lege coach, the last nine years at Spring Arbor University, where he also serves as athletic director. He has also coached at John Wesley, Mt. Vernon Nazarene, Southern Illinois, Dallas Baptist, and Bethel College. His 2000 Dallas Baptist club and his 2007 Spring Arbor team were runners-up for the NAIA National Championship. His 2008 team at Spring Arbor finished third. Riggleman was NAIA National Coach of the Year in 2000 and again in 2007.

Farley enters his 20th season at Butler, and his 23rd season as a head coach, having served at Davis & Elkins College from 1988-1991. He has been named the Horizon League Coach of the Year four times as well as being selected the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1990 while at Davis & Elkins. Farley also served as assistant coach at the U.S. Military Academy and as a graduate assistant at the University of Arizona under Hall of Fame Coach Jerry Kindall.

At the 2009 San Diego Convention, the

inaugural winner of the award was Mark Johnson, Head Coach at Sam Houston State University. Last year in Dallas, Jerry Novosel, West Middlesex High School (Pa.), and Gordie Gillespie, University of St. Francis, received the award.

Each year at the ABCA Convention, there is a keynote speaker on coaching eth-ics. This year, Jim Tracy, Manager of the Colorado Rockies, will be the speaker. The title of his talk is “Character Counts.” Farley and Riggleman will be presented with their awards by O’Connell prior to Tracy’s presentation.

Six New Members Joining the ABCA Hall of FameThe ABCA welcomes six new members into its Hall of Fame as the Class of 2011: Jim Hall, Lockport (Ill.) High School; Marc Johnson, Cherry Creek (Colo.) High School; Mike Sheppard, Sr., Seton Hall University; Harry Tholen, Sante Fe College; Gary Ward, Oklahoma State University; and Lou Yacinich, Grand View University.

Biographies of the inductees follow.

Jim Hall coached at Lockport (Ill.) High School for 31 years, win-ning state titles as both a head baseball coach and assistant football coach. He was named Head Baseball Coach in 1991, and won state Coach of the Year hon-ors in 1992, 1997, 1998, and 2005.

ABCA CONVENTION PREVIEW

The American Base-ball Coaches Associa-tion returns to Nash-ville, Tenn., for the 66th Annual National Baseball Convention at the beautiful and recently renovated Gay-lord Opryland Resort, January 6-9, 2011. The Opryland is consid-ered one of the greatest convention hotels in the world and has tra-ditionally been one of the highest attended of our rotating convention locations.

The ABCA convention begins the “Hot Stove” baseball season as well as a brand-new calendar year with the largest and greatest coach’s convention in the world. It will be four days of meetings, clin-ics, exhibits, Honors Luncheon, and Hall of Fame Banquet. It is the ultimate four-day vacation and business trip while networking with and learning from outstanding baseball people from all over the country and world.

The ABCA convention starts on Thursday with registration and the trade show opens that afternoon. With over 300 exhibitors partici-pating again this year, Nashville has become the standard at our national convention, and the exhib-its are always exciting as we view the latest and greatest in baseball products and technology. Thurs-day evening will open the business side of the convention with annu-al meetings of the many divisions within the ABCA—NCAA, NAIA, Junior College, Pacific Association, High School, and Youth.

The meetings allow every coach to attend their specific divisional group to listen, learn, and dis-cuss pertinent topics, and coaches become aware of the latest issues, rule changes, and needs of their

respective groups and lev-els. More importantly, it provides the opportunity to network with peers, to become more involved in one’s chosen profession, and to serve on commit-tees to help improve our great game.

There are many aspects, events, and factors which

make our convention memorable each year; however, as Executive Director Dave Keilitz always says, the clinic sessions are “the bread and butter” of every ABCA Con-vention. Each year, an outstanding lineup of some of the best base-ball people in the world covers all aspects of the game. This year, Sec-ond Vice-President John Schaly has put together another group of great baseball people to present. A list-ing of speakers and topics can be found on page 11.

For the price of $100, you get all privileges of the annual 2011 ABCA membership dues, the 2011 clinic and exhibit pass, and a meal at both the Honors Luncheon on Saturday and the Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet on Friday night. You can help us to honor and celebrate the significant achievements and contributions of our honorees at both of those won-derful events while enjoying the fellowship, speeches, and a pair of superb meals at a reduced price due to sponsorships from Dia-mond Sports and Rawlings Sport-ing Goods.

Please try to participate in this year’s convention in Nashville in what will surely be another memo-rable event for all of the attendees.

See you in Nashville!

In just his second season at the helm, the Porters won conference, regional, and sectional crowns, eventually finishing fourth in the state playoffs. Hall’s teams went on to win or share 10 more confer-ence titles. The Porters won nine regional titles and reached the state tournament four times, winning the 2005 Class AA state championship with an 8-4 win over Mt. Carmel to finish 40-3 in Hall’s final season as head coach. They also finished second in 1997. Hall finished his career with a record of 417-144-1 in 15 seasons.

In addition to his success on the baseball diamond, Hall served as defensive line and special teams coach for the Lockport football program that won back-to-back Class 8A State Championships in 2003 and 2004. Before joining Lockport, Hall coached football and baseball at Marist High School in Mount Greenwood, Ill.

A past president of the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association, he currently serves as its treasurer. He has been inducted into the Marist High School Hall of Fame, the Lockport High School Hall of Fame, and the IHSBCA Hall of Fame, and was named by the National Federation of State High School Associations as Central Section Coach of the Year for Baseball in 2005.

Hall retired from Lockport High School in June 2006, and currently works as a marketing representative for Disney’s Wide World of Sports. He also works for USA Baseball and has also coached international baseball, taking teams to Italy, Aruba, Japan, and the Dominican Republic.

In the summer of 1971, Marc Johnson returned to Colorado from Fort Hood, Texas, where he served in the U.S. Army and was the Head Coach of the 2nd Armored Division baseball team. He

was then hired as the assistant varsity base-ball coach at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colo.

One year later, he took over its fledgling base-ball program, and dur-ing his first year as head coach, his team finished the season with a losing

record. That was the only team he ever coached to a losing season.

Johnson has coached his teams to 24 league titles and 11 state title games, winning seven state championships. He was also the head soccer coach at Cherry

His Connie Mack team has made three appearances in the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) World Series. In 1987-1988, Johnson was an assistant coach of the USA Junior National teams that won silver and gold medals in inter-national play. In 2004, he was named head coach of the USA Junior National team that competed in Taiwan.

He has coached over 300 young men who have gone on to play baseball at the collegiate level and 75 who have played professionally. Five of his former players are currently playing in the big leagues.

Johnson was named the Volunteer Summer Baseball Coach of the Year in 1988 by the United States Amateur Baseball Federation. In 1996, he was named National High School Coach of the Year by the ABCA. In 1997, he was named National Coach of the Year by the AABC, and in 2000, he was named as one of the National Coaches of the Decade by Baseball America.

He has been the Colorado Baseball Coach of the Year seven times and received the Colorado Rockies Pioneer Award in 2004. He was inducted into the Colorado High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Colorado High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010. That same year, he was inducted into the prestigious Colorado Sports Hall of Fame whose membership includes professional and amateur athletes and coaches.

In 31 years as head coach at Seton Hall University from 1973-2003, Mike Sheppard, Sr. recorded 28 winning seasons and 27 postseason berths, highlighted by a confer-ence record 15 Big East tournament appearanc-es. He was named Big East Coach of the Year three times (1985, 1987, and 1989), and guided the Pirates to the con-ference tournament title in 1987. Sheppard’s squads reached the NCAA Tournament 12 times, and he led Seton Hall to appearances in the College

World Series in 1974 and 1975.

Under Sheppard’s tutelage, the Pirates won 20 or more games 30 times, 30 or more games 22 times, and 40 or more games five times. He holds a career record of 998-540-11 and ranks 50th on the NCAA’s all-time wins list.

During his tenure, more than 80 Seton Hall players went on to sign professional contracts, with 30 of them moving on to play in the major leagues. He coached eight first-round draft picks including major leaguers Craig Biggio, Rick Cerone, Jason Grilli, Matt Morris, Mo Vaughn, and John Valentin.

In addition to coaching, Sheppard spent 40 years as a full-time faculty member for the university, beginning as an asso-ciate professor for Health and Physical Education, and later serving as the Department Chairman within the College of Education.

A member of the Seton Hall Prep, Seton Hall University, and Newark (N.J.) Halls of Fame, Sheppard was honored in 1989 as a “Giant Steps” Award winner by the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sports Society. Finally, Sheppard

was also honored by having his Seton Hall jersey, number 17, retired during an on-field ceremony on Apr. 25, 2004.

Though currently retired from coaching baseball, Sheppard remains active in the Seton Hall community as the Head Coach Emeritus, while also continu-ing his duties as the Chairman of Essex County American Legion Baseball, a post held since 1983, and the Commissioner of Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League.

For Harry Tholen—teacher, coach, and administrator—junior college has been a way of life for 43 years. Coaching teams at Mayfair City College in Chicago; Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio; and Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Fla., his career record of 782 wins and 538 losses includes five confer-ence championships, eight regional appearances, two regional runners-up, one regional and district

championship, and one World Series appearance. Additional honors include 1980 Indiana-Ohio Junior College Coach of the Year, 1985 Florida State and Southeast District Coach of the Year, and 1992 Mid-Florida Conference Coach of the Year honors.

In 1999, Tholen was inducted into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, and in 2004, he was inducted into the Florida Community Colleges Activities Association Hall of Fame in recognition of outstanding contributions and service to its activities and member institutions.

Tholen has been active in the NJCAA for 38 years. He has served the associa-tion in a variety of roles, including stints on the NJCAA Rules and Constitution Committees and was later elected to serve as the association’s Secretary and Vice-President. He was elected twice to serve as President of the National Junior College Coaches Association from 1999 to 2005. In addition, he served on the ABCA Executive Committee from 2000 to 2005 and on the ABCA Board of Directors from 2003 to 2005.

his teams finished in Baseball America’s Top 10.

A former baseball and basketball star for NMSU, Ward coached 58 All-Americans, including 15 who were named to the first team. Among Ward’s players were Robin Ventura, 1988 Gold Spikes Award win-ner and Baseball America’s Player of the Decade for the 1980s; and Pete Incaviglia, the NCAA’s career home run leader and Baseball America’s Player of the Century.

Lou Yacinich has had two constants through most of his life, base-ball and Grand View University. Answering to his uniform number, “40,” he grew up in the shadows of the univer-sity, and attended dur-ing its Junior College status (1960- 1961), before completing his bachelor’s degree

at Drake University (1963) in Health and Physical Education, followed by a master’s in secondary education from Northwest Missouri State University (1977). Prior to

his coaching tenure at Grand View, he coached at the youth, high school, and junior college levels. His overall record is 1,094-797, including 946-655 at Grand View.

His teams at Grand View claimed a JUCO State Championship (1974) and two state runner-ups finishes (1975, 1976) before joining the NAIA and Midwest Collegiate Conference. Once there, Grand View won five league titles, seven district titles, and one Area 4 Championship while participating in three NAIA National Tournaments (1984, 1985, and 1991). He received 18 coach of the year awards, including nine at the district level, three at the area level, one at the regional level, and five from the conference.

Yacinich served as trial coach in Home-stead, Fla., for selection of the 1996 USA Baseball Team and has been a clinician for the ABCA, Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, and Minnesota Baseball Coaches Association. He has also served on a variety of NAIA commit-tees and is presently first vice-president on the NAIA Baseball Coaches Board of Directors.

Yacinich has been inducted into the Grand View Athletic Hall of Fame, Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame (where he is an original member and has been active for 42 years), and the NAIA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. He has served the university as Admissions Representative, Dean of Students, Adjunct Instructor, and Athletic Director. In 1992, 1993, and 1994, Grand View host-ed the NAIA World Series in Des Moines and Yacinich was the tournament director.

Coach at the University of Connecticut.

Baylock retired as UConn’s head baseball coach in May 2003 after a 24-year run dur-ing which he posted a 556-492-8 record, guid-ing the Huskies to Big East championships in 1990 and 1994, along with a trio of NCAA tournament berths. Including his tenure as an assistant base-ball coach, Baylock compiled an 822-614-11 record over 39 years and, at the time of his retirement, he had coached 1,447 of the 2,327 games (62 percent) in UConn’s baseball history.

His association with UConn began in 1963 as the freshman baseball coach, a part-time position. Baylock joined the Huskies’ staff on a full-time basis a year later as an assistant football and baseball coach—positions he held for 15 seasons. As an assistant baseball coach from 1964 to 1979, Baylock helped UConn to the College World Series in 1965, 1972, and 1979, before assuming the head coach-

ing reins in 1980. Baylock was also a part of four Huskies’ football teams that won or shared Yankee Conference titles, and had a long tenure as UConn’s freshman football coach.

Over the years, Baylock has been hon-ored by several organizations, and has been enshrined in seven Halls of Fame, including the ABCA Hall of Fame. Baylock has been active on the interna-tional baseball scene as a distinguished pitching clinician, and served as pitching coach for the 1985 and 1989 U.S. Senior National Teams. A veteran coach in the Cape Cod Baseball League, Baylock has also sat on the faculty of the department of kinesiology at UConn.

In the spring of 2008, he received awards for his outstanding contribution from both the Connecticut High School Coaches Association and the National Football Foundation’s Southeastern Connecticut Chapter.

Baylock is in his seventh year as the football program’s Director of Football Alumni and Community Affairs, where he is involved with a number of activi-

ties, including the cultivation of relation-ships with Husky football alumni (players, coaches and support staff) and other members of the football community. Baylock serves as the team’s liaison both to professional scouts and Connecticut high school coaches, while also assist-ing the team’s departing seniors with career networking, representing UConn at various speaking engagements, and involving current student-athletes with community service projects.

Before joining UConn, Baylock served as head football coach at East Catholic High School in Manchester, Conn., from 1962 to 1964. A native of New Britain, Conn. where he played on New Britain High School’s 1955 state championship team, Baylock is a 1960 graduate of Central Connecticut where he was a four-year let-ter winner in both football and baseball and captained both teams. There he received the Gladstone Award, CCSU’s highest award presented to a scholar-athlete. Baylock earned a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1962 where he served as a graduate assistant baseball coach.

Mead to serve as ABCA President in 2011The incoming Presi-dent of the Ameri-can Baseball Coaches Association, Tim Mead is in his 28th season as the Head Coach at Walsh University. The school’s all-time leader in victories with 580, Mead led Walsh to 29 wins and its first trip to the NAIA World Series in 2007. After a 9-7 regular season finish in the American Mideast Conference (AMC) North Division that season, Walsh stormed its way through the NAIA Region IX Tournament, then hosted and won the East Coast Super Regional to earn the World Series berth. At the series, the Cavs won their first game before being eliminated by Hous-ton Baptist.

In 2005, Mead led Walsh to the AMC North title and was named AMC North and Region IX Coach of the Year. He directed Walsh to a school record 36 wins and the AMC regular season cham-

pionship in 2000, when he was selected AMC and NAIA Region IX Coach of the Year. Mead also directed Walsh to the Mid-Ohio Conference (MOC) title in 1991 when he was named District 22 Coach of the Year. Walsh reached its only District 22 title game that year, and won 29 games, matching the record that had been set in 1996 when the Cavs reached the MOC semifinals. Under Mead, the Cavs have qualified for postseason play in 16 of the last 20 seasons.

Mead has also collected honors away from Walsh. A former officer of the NAIA Baseball Coaches Association, he has coached the Ohio high school select team at the King Kamehameha Baseball Classic in Honolulu, and in 2002, he served as an assistant to Sam Riggleman on the staff of the NAIA team that toured Czechoslovakia.

A 1981 graduate of Walsh, Mead was a pitcher on the diamond and was elected to the Walsh Wall of Fame in 1983. He was also a three-time All-MOC selection in soccer and was twice named All-District 22.

Mead has also been Walsh’s head soc-cer coach for 29 seasons and is the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories surpassing the 300 win mark this fall. He has been voted conference Coach of the Year six times and was named Ohio Coach of the Year in 1993.

Hundreds of coaches from New York to California have learned the secret to running a more successful camp: Let

someone else do most of the work. And while working less, they are making even more money.

“It’s not often you can work less and make more,” said Brad Allen, head coach at St. Joseph-Ogden HS in Illinois. “But we took a local clinic with 50 kids and turned it into a 300-player camp that attracts the top talent from all over central Illinois. We make five times the money and the camp is actually eas-ier to run now than it was then.”

For Allen and hundreds of others, the secret was partnering with U.S. Baseball Academy, a Louisville-based company that has been helping coaches run camps since 1988. In the past few years, its growth has been nothing short of explosive. Since 2002, the company has grown to 90,000 players in 32 states and boasts an impressive Advisory Staff that in-cludes Don Mattingly, Paul O’Neill and Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb. Benefi-ciaries of the expansion have been thousands of college and high school coaches, who have earned $4 million in hosting fees in the past eight years.

U.S. Baseball Academy founder and Presi-dent Marc Hoffman describes the concept as a kind of “camp in a box.” “We handle all the administrative functions that all coaches hate,” he said. “We not only give them the itinerary and equipment; we take care of ad-vertising, marketing, registration, payments, T-shirts, insurance, and paying the instructors. The schools and coaches have no expenses, no risk, no phone calls from parents. They keep the biggest slice of revenue, plus all the equipment when camp is over.”

The company is seeking new host locations for its rapidly expanding Spring Training pro-gram, which offers six days of hitting, pitching and catcher lessons to local players in grades 1 through 12. A typical site runs indoors for six Sunday afternoons between December and March, before high school or college play begins. Host schools typically attract 150 to 250 players from an hour’s radius and earn up to $10,000 for their local coaching staff. Be-cause age groups are staggered throughout the day, there are never more than 50 players at a time, limiting the need for space.

“Sometimes coaches think they need a giant field house, but with 30 or 40 kids per hour, it’s really not much different than run-ning a normal practice session in your gym-nasium,” Hoffman said.

Parents pay only about $100 for the six

one-hour lessons, with the largest slice of the pie going back to the host school and coaches. Hosting coaches can do whatever they want with the money, which generally ranges from $7,000 to $10,000. “Most coaches use some of the money to supplement their salaries,” Hoffman said, “but many put some or all of the money back into their program to pay for field upgrades, a spring trip or new uniforms. We send their money before camp ends, and they determine who gets the checks.”

The company works like a franchise. Coaches reduce their workloads because they don’t have to develop itineraries, brochures and handle administrative tasks. They increase their numbers and revenue because of the pa-nache of hosting a nationwide program.

“U.S. Baseball Academy made six weeks of instruction feel like it lasted only six hours,” said Youngstown State University assistant coach Craig Antush.

“The administrative staff is highly organized and ef-ficient, making these camps very low-maintenance,” said Steve Farley, head coach at Butler University in India-napolis and a host for seven years. “We’ve been sold out each year.”

University of Findlay head coach Troy Berry agreed. “U.S.

Baseball Academy has been nothing but great for our program. It has helped build relation-ships around the community and has been a great fundraiser. They do all of the leg work and we get to do the fun stuff: coach the kids. I highly recommend getting involved with them.”

Hoffman said the company’s biggest obsta-cle to growth has been that coaches are some-times skeptical, often questioning whether it’s too good to be true. Skip Bailey, athletic director at Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y., and an ABCA committee member, thought exactly that four years ago when he was head coach at the school. But 1,000 players attending four clinics has made him a believer.

“This was a home run for our baseball pro-gram,” Bailey said. “We have been running camps for 25 years, and these have been our best. I thought their ad was too good to be true, but I’m glad I made the call.”

The company hopes more coaches make the call, but don’t delay. More than 10,000 play-ers are already registered for Spring Training 2011, and new sites must be finalized soon. If you don’t have time to put something togeth-er for this year, contact them to get on their schedule for summer or next spring before a coach near you reserves your territorial rights. lIvIng colorTurface Athletics has added an exclusive new color to its popular lineup of infield conditioners: Pro League Heritage Red. Pro League Heritage Red provides a classic, rich cherry wood color for skinned infields and offers excellent ball visibility on wet and dry fields. Pro League also absorbs its weight in water to prevent puddles on the infield and stave off rainouts. TESTIMONIALS

Wake Forest InstallsSynthetic Turf Field

Baseball represents one of the fastest-growing segments of the synthetic turf market. For Wake Forest University, making the change to synthetic turf meant making the right choice, and the school selected AstroTurf® after a thorough research of turf products.

“We narrowed our search down to three surfaces. Ultimately, we chose AstroTurf® because of the technology of the monofilament fibers in GameDay Grass™ 3D60H, combined with the nylon Root Zone™ fibers which encapsulate the infill system,”said Steve Adams, Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations at Wake Forest.

The players also practiced on several types of fields, but felt the AstroTurf® system was best. “This is far and away the closest thing to real grass and gives the truest bounce. “This field is going to give us a competitive advantage. AstroTurf® is the best product on the market, and for us it was a no-brainer,” said head baseball coach Tom Walter.

Baseball programs such as Wake Forest, the Toronto Blue Jays, Duke University, University of Kansas, Wichita State University, and more that have chosen AstroTurf®, a world leader in synthetic turf sports fields.

Proven Winner Chooses a Winning Product

Louisiana State University Head Coach Paul Mainieri was named the 2009 National Coach of the Year by Rivals.com. It marked the third 2009 National Coach of the Year designation for Mainieri, who has been recognized by Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America.

“The Hack Attack is a great training tool for our hitters and catchers,” Mainieri says. “It is as good as live pitching with its vision and timing. It throws accurate breaking pitches, it’s indestructible, and it’s easy to operate and move. We used the Hack Attack every day on the long, tough road to Omaha. There are few products that I endorse, but I really believe in this machine.”

The exclusive design of the Hack Attack baseball pitching machine allows hitters to see the ball clearly all the way through the feeding motion, acceleration, and release, just like with a live pitcher. The Hack Attack throws unmatched right- and left-handed major league fastballs at up to 100 miles per hour and all breaking pitches by simply changing the speed of the wheels with three dials.

A Village That Can Make a Difference

Vero Beach Sports Village provides the ideal setting to enable your team to grow together and better prepare for your upcoming season. Everything you need is here at this 67-acre sports and conference center.

The complex features an abundance of competition and practice fields, along with on-site housing, dining and recreation allowing your team to spend quality time together on and off the field. Here’s what the three coaches had to say about their experience at Vero Beach Sports Village:

“I had looked at other facilities and none of them matched up to the great accommodations here. I was treated like royalty, with everything at the palm of my hands. It was very convenient to be able to walk to and from wherever I needed to go.”

—George Foster, Former MLB Player, Baseball Boot Camp Program

“I would recommend this facility to anyone, especially any baseball team that needs to come down and work out from the north. There are ample things to do, and everything is right here. When you put all of the players together in one place, they spend quality time on and off the field, which is great for team-building.”

–Tom Lawless, Manager , China National Baseball Team

“We have been to other places in Florida; this is by far the best we’ve visited. None of them touch this place as far as facilities and the organizational skills that the staff have here.”

–Lew Jenkins, Head Baseball Coach, St. Mary’s College, MD

CASE STUDY

When Canton Joint Recreation Department Director Nadine Sawaya heard that the U.S. Women’s Olympic Softball

Team was coming to the Thurman Munson Stadium in Ohio, she knew she was going to have to convert the baseball field into a softball field. But she had no worries or concerns. Sawaya knew that a superior team deserved a superior facility, and she knew exactly which superior company could supply her with the things she needed.

Sawaya didn’t hesitate for one second in picking up the phone and calling Mid-America Sports Advantage (M.A.S.A.). She knew M.A.S.A. would have all of the equipment and field maintenance products that would make her field superior. And to top it off, the price wasn’t going to break the bank.

“I’ve been working with M.A.S.A. for 26 years now, including 10 years at Canton Joint Recreation Department,” she says. “I’m a loyal customer. Pricing is definitely one of the reasons I contact M.A.S.A. In addition to pricing, I know their sales staff is knowledgeable and the quality of their products are going to be superior.”

M.A.S.A. had precisely what Nadine needed to convert her baseball field to a softball field. Sportpanel Portable Fencing allows for an outfield fence to be set up in less than 30 minutes. This fencing is constructed of heavy-duty white PVC tubing with a rugged polypropylene “plastic link” interior. The construction makes it lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant. It will hold up to any abuse that is thrown at it. Flexible foam connectors allow the impacted panel to break loose without tipping over adjacent panels. That way a baseball team is not spending time picking up the fencing instead of playing.

An additional benefit of using Sportpanel Portable Fencing is that the legs rotate and slide, which allow for minimal storage space. Sawaya knew that when the Olympic team was done using the field, they could easily store the fencing for future use.

The U.S. Women’s Olympic Softball team came and played on Thurman Munson Stadium’s field without any problems. M.A.S.A provided Sawaya with all the equipment she needed to get her field to that superior playing level the Olympic team deserved.

M.A.S.A. has been in the training aid and field maintenance equipment industry for 27 years. The company sells equipment for baseball, softball, and football, soccer, field

hockey, lacrosse fields, as well as basketball facilities.. Let M.A.S.A. make your experience superior by contacting its knowledgeable sales representatives like Sawaya did. Or you can visit the company’s Web site for the ease and convenience of shopping 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
